Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com BROWN -- Mrs. Pearl Stokes Brown, 90, widow of Laddie Brown, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 14, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Cedar Swamp Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Cecil Humphrey Stokes and Junious Stokes. She graduated from Darlington High School and also received a degree in elementary education from Columbia College. She taught school in both Darlington and Wiliamsburg Counties. She was a member of Cedar Swamp Methodist Church. Surviving is one son, J. Connor Brown of Kingstree.
KENNEDY -- Funeral services for James Augustus "Boogie" Kennedy, Jr. were held on Monday, May 11, 1998, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Reverend Willie Wilson. Burial followed in Kingstree Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Kennedy, 51, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his residence in Kingstree. He was born October 22, 1946, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Anna Grace Hanna Kennedy and the late Gus James Kennedy. He was employed as a construction worker. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his wife, Mrs. Alfreda Cunningham Kennedy of the home; one daughter, Kia-Vonna Shante Kennedy of Florida; one sister, Gloria Kennedy of Kingstree; and one brother, Franklyn Kennedy of Kingstree.
TOWNE -- Mrs. Eva Gamble Towne, 97, widow of Ariail Towne, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, in the Presbyterian Home in Florence. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Indiantown Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Towne was born in Indiantown, a daughter of the late Robert Disney Gamble and Frances Louise Vause Gamble. She attended Queens College and was a graduate of Draughns Business College. She was bookkeeper for her husbandıs oil company for many years and was a charter member of American Legion Post #8. She was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church since 1925.
GAMBLE -- Hammond R. Gamble, 75, died Friday, May 15, 1998, in a Manning hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, May 18, 1998, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in New Market Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Gamble was born in Charleston, a son of William G. Gamble, Jr. and Lucy H. Gamble. His grandparents, Dr. William G. Gamble and Cornelia G. Gamble, lived in Kingstree for many years. Mr. Gamble attended Michigan State University and was a Naval Pilot in the Pacific during World War II. He worked with his father for the Northeast Michigan Blood Bank Association, and also was a member of the Burgess Bay Hunting Club. He was preceded in death by a wife, Margaret, and a son, Theodore. Survivors are: his wife, Alberta (Bert) Gamble of Salters, two step-children, Mrs. Patricia Burr and Thomas Lawson, both of Goose Creek; and one brother, Lucien Gamble of Greenville, Michigan.
DAVIS -- Funeral services for Elizabeth Davis were held Wed., May 20, 1998, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed in the Kingstree Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Ms. Davis, 85, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born May 11, 1913, in Williamsburg County, to the late Mammie Davis. She worked for a number of years as an elementary school teacher at Lane Elementary School. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Surviving is one brother, Leroy Davis of Brooklyn, N.Y.
WORRELL -- Jack Dempsey Worrell, 71, of Kingstree, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 21, 1998, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Gaskins Cemetery in Lake City directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mr. Worrell was born in Savannah, Ga., the son of the late James Byrd Worrell and Corine Gaskins Worrell. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired farmer and was employed by Milliken Co. of Kingstree for 41 years. Survivors are: his wife, Annie Ray Wallace Worrell; one daughter, Patsy Johns of Timmonsville; four sons, John Worrell of Cades; Harris Worrell of Kingstree; Melvin Worrell of Manning; and Richard Worrell of Greeleyville; one brother, Clinton "Pete" Worrell of Columbia; and two sisters, Margaret Kirby of Greenville; and Lucille McGee of Kingstree.
BURGESS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Beulah Footman Burgess were held Friday, May 23, 1998, at Union Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Willie Bryant. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Burgess, 96, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Ron McNair Nursing Center in Lake City. She was born August 6, 1902, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Mrs. Richel Izzard and Cruser Hannah. She was a retired farmer. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board. She was also a member of the Joint Stock Lodge and the YMCA. Surviving is one step-daughter, Mrs. Mary Burgess Glover.
HARDEN -- Funeral services for Rev. Eli Harden were held recently at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Charleston, conducted by Rev. Brown. Burial followed at the church cemetery directed by Felding Funeral Home. Rev. Harden died Wednesday, May 27, 1998 in Charleston. He was a son of Ed Harden and Nora D. Harden, was born October 23, 1912. Survivors are: his wife, Minister Mary J. Harden of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Anna Bell Bright of Lane; Mrs. Mary Gibbs and Mrs. Martha Williams, both of Charleston; Mrs. Sandra Morant of the home; and Mrs. Elnora Simpson of Mablewood, N.J.; two sons, Eli Harden, Jr. and Kenneth Harden, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two brothers, Alex Harden of Lane; and James Harden of Charlotte, N.C.; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kirby of Rocky Mount, N.C.
BRYANT -- Funeral services for Joseph James Bryant, Jr. were held Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church in Kingstree, conducted by Elder Roosevelt Fulton. Burial followed in St. Michael United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Bryant, 53, died Monday, May 26, 1998, at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. He was born August 2, 1944, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Iler Green and the late Joseph Tisdale. He was a church member of Bibleway Church in New York. He was employed as a factory worker. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his wife, Mrs. Wendy Bryant of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Corey Bryant and Derrick Bryant, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one daughter, Shauna Bryant, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven brothers, Harry Green and Johnny Green, both of Kingstree; Danny Green of Italy; Donnie Green of Rochester, N.Y.; Earl Tisdale of Brooklyn, N.Y;. Junnie Tisdale and Michael Tisdale of Georgia; and ten sisters, Mrs. Iler V. Grant, Mrs. Rosa Tiller and Mrs. Hattie Ruth Burrows, all of Rochester, N.Y.; Mrs. Liza Maddoy and Mrs. Nettie Henderson, Mrs. Emma Mouzon all of Kingstree; Mrs. Sandra Taft of Rochester, N.Y.; Mrs. Marsha Gayle Tisdale and Mrs. Melissa Tisdale, both of Philadelphia; and Mrs. Sherry Tisdale of Rochester, N.Y.
EVANS -- Alvin Lawrence Evans, 65, formerly of Charleston, died May 27, 1998, at his residence in Greeleyville. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Old Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston, conducted by Rev. K. Adams Best, Rev. Rufus Wilson, Bishop James E. Cooper and Elder Larry McFadden. Burial followed at Old Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Samuels Funeral Home. Mr. Evans was born November 10, 1932, in Charleston, a son of the late Robert Evans and Helen Teresa Crawford Evans Nelson and stepson of the late Christopher Nelson, Sr. He was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men. He graduated from Burke Industrial High School. He also attended South-Eastern Business College, Nielson Computer College, Trident Technical College, where he received training in chemistry. He was employed as a chemist in the chemical division of Dupont Plant. He retired as owner-operator of North American Van Lines of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. Survivors are: his wife, Rosa Bell Brown Evans of the home; one daughter, Rosa M. Cooper of Greeleyville; one step-brother, Christopher Nelson, Jr. of Charleston; one step-sister, Emma J. Biggins of Charleston; and one adopted sister, Lavenia Dash of Charleston.
