Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com HEYWARD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Eloise Heyward were held on Saturday, June 28, 1997, at First Calvary United Bible Way Church of Christ in St. Stephen, conducted by Bishop Enoch Fordham. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Heyward, 80, died on Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Florence. She was born November 4, 1913, in Greeleyville. She was a member of First Calvary United Bible Way Church of Christ.
DUKES Funeral services for Edward Dukes were held Saturday, June 28, 1997, at St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Kingstree. Burial followed at the St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Dukes, 80, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston. He was born February 5, 1917, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Daniel Dukes and Georgia Boyd. He was farmer. He was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church where he served on the Steward Board. Survivors are: five sons, Edward Dukes, Jr. of Andrews; Jerome Dukes of Andrews; Kim Dukes of Summerville; Daniel Dukes of North Augusta, S.C.; and Frankie Dukes of Camden, N.J.; one grandson, Stacey Dukes, who he reared; and five daughters, Jeann Dukes of Kingstree; Mrs. Mary Barr of Salters; Mrs. Para Lee Scott of Kingstree; Mrs. Mae Frances Scott of Kingstree; and Unaree ScaiFee of Winston Salem, N.C.
JACKSON Funeral services for Walter Jackson, Sr. were held Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Good Hope Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Tommy Shubrick. Burial followed in Hunter Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Jackson, 61, died Friday, June 20, 1997, in St. Mary Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was born September 14, 1936, a son of the late Louis Jackson and Daisy Ann Woods Jackson. He was employed as a truck driver. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church. Survivors are: one son, Walter Jackson, Jr. of Surfside Beach; one daughter, Carolyn Jackson of Columbia; one sister, Mae Frances Jackson of Greeleyville; and one brother, James Jackson of Greeleyville.
McELVEEN -- Virginia Wisteria (Miss Wista) McElveen, 98, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, in the Presbyterian Home in Florence. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, 1997, in the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Miss McElveen was born in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Robert Charles and Sallie Hardy McElveen. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Winthrop College. She was retired attendance teacher for Williamsburg County schools. Miss Wista was an active member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where she served as Director of Christian Education for many years, retiring in 1968, and for many years, she worked with young people at Camp Harmony.
SMITH -- Fred L. Smith, 87, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at the Edwin Morgan Center, Laurinburg. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Reverend Tom Groome. Mr. Smith was a native of Kingstree and a son of the late Robert B. and Flora Smith. He was a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon and president of the Men's Bible Class. He was active in the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club and during World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. Survivors are: his wife, Maria Wells Smith; one son, Fred L. Smith, Jr.; and daughter, Garland Smith of Charlotte; and one sister, Helen Wilson of Laurinburg.
LESESNE -- Charles Sanders Lesesne, 82, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, 1997, at graveside in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Greeleyville, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Lesesne was born in Greeleyville, a son of the late William Edgar and Eva Hogan Lesesne. He was a graduate of Greeleyville High School and was a retired farmer. He was a member of McDowell Presbyterian Church and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Mary Louise Chandler Lesesne of Greeleyville.
EDWARDS -- Funeral services for Maceo Edwards were held Sunday, July 13, 1997, at St. John Apostolic Holiness Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Bishop Kenneth Swaringer. Burial followed in Keels Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Edwards died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born in October 13, 1921, in Cades, a son of the late Bessie Edwards and Mullie Fulton. He was an Army veteran who fought in World War II. He was employed as a debarker in the logyard at Georgia Pacific. He was a member of St. John Apostolic Holiness Church, where he was a Lead Deacon, Treasurer and a member of the Senior Choir. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Lucille Keels Edwards; three sons, Maceo Edwards, Jerry Edwards and Willie Edwards, all of Greeleyville; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Ruth Floyd of Bronx, N.Y.; Mrs. Clementine Johnson of Jacksonville, Fl.; Sadrina Edwards of Greeleyville; and Barbara Montgomery of Sanford, Fl.; three brothers, Leroy Fulton, James Fulton and Edward Fulton, all of Kingstree; and three sisters, Bernice Glover of Bronx, N.Y; Rebecca Fulton and Hattie Ward, both of Washington, D.C.
MATTHEWS Funeral services for James Ernest "Step" Matthews were held Monday, July 7, 1997, at Promiseland Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Carl Shaw. Burial followed in Rockyford Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Matthews died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born August 20, 1912, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Chester Matthews and Mary Coard Matthews. He was employed by Georgia Pacific as a truck driver. He was a member of Promiseland Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Trustee Board. Survivors are: one son, Jimmy Wilson Matthews of Wateree, S.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Barnes of Philadephia, Pa.; and Mrs. Lucilla Singletary of Miami, Fla.
McCREA Funeral services for Lelon McCrea were held Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Charles McLamore. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Salters directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. McCrea died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born August 2, 1921, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Sam Kellahan McCrea and Viola Davis McCrea. He was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. While living in Kingstree, he was employed by Drexel Furniture Company in Kingstree. Later, he moved to New York where he worked in the Garment District for 30 years from which he retired. He was a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church in New York City. After moving back to Kingstree he served as a member of the Usher Board and the Board of Trustee at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Diann Smith of Kingstree; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Bell McCrea of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Ruther Lee McCant of Baltimore, Md.; and Mrs. Annie Mae Davis of Maryland; three brothers, Mackie J. McCrea of Kingstree; Sam McCrea of Durham, N.C.; and Louis McBride of Kingstree; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Sally Mae Cunningham of Kingstree.
FEAGIN -- Mrs. Ettie Lou M. Feagin, 69, wife of William Leon Feagin, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in the Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial followed in the Old Piney Grove Cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Feagin was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Clarence Melton and Cora Driggers Melton. She was a homemaker and member of Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors are: her husband, William Leon Feagin of Lake City; two daughters, Mrs. Louise F. Kirby of Laurinburg, N.C. and Mrs. Yvonne F. Lynch of Scranton; two sons, Odell Feagin of Middleton, TN.; and Veignro Feagin of Kingstree; two sisters, Christine M. Lee of Lake City; and Bertha M. Miles of Scranton; and one brother, Burlon Melton of Little Rock, Arkansas.
