Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com CYRUS -- Funeral services for Walker Eli Cyrus were held Oct. 17, 1998, at Sandridge Holiness Church in Kingstree, conducted by Bishop Norman B. Brown. Burial followed in the Kingstree Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson. Mr. Cyrus, 67, died October 13, 1998, at the Carolina's Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born June 7, 1931, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Samuel James Cyrus, Sr. and Alafair Nelson Cyrus. He was a member of Sandridge Holiness Church. He was a retired employee with the New York City Housing Authority. Survivors are: one son, Eric Daniels of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Torrence and Willa Daniels of Durham, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wall of Kingstree; and Mrs. Evelyn Williams of Baltimore, Md.; and two brothers, Samuel James Cyrus, Jr. and Edward Scott, both of Baltimore, Md.
DANIELS -- Funeral services for Esaw "Tommy Hawk" Daniels, Sr. were held Oct. 17, 1998, at Faith United Methodist Church in Lake City, conducted by Rev. Harold G. Gordon. Burial followed in the Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson. Mr. Daniels, 47, died Sat., Oct. 10, 1998, at his residence in Lake City. He was born Feb. 24, 1951, in Williamsburg County, a son of Mrs. Eva Mae McCrea Daniels and the late Prince Daniels, Sr. He graduated from Cades-Hebron High School in 1969. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He worked with a heating and air conditioner company for many years. Survivors, in addition to his mother of the home, are: a friend, Jannie McKnight Dan-iels of Kingstree; two sons, Kelly Daniels and Esaw Daniels, Jr., both of Kingstree; and four sisters, Mrs. Jannie D. Driffin of Greeleyville; Mrs. Earline James of Lake City; Mrs. Ida D. Brockington and Celestine Daniels, both of Kingstree.
BYNUM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Varner Bynum were held Sat., Oct. 10, 1998, at Clauddie Henryhand Memorial Chapel in Kingstree, conducted by Elder Linwood Cooper. Burial followed at Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Churchyard Cemetery in Gourdine directed by Henryhand Funeral Home. Mrs. Bynum died Sun., Oct. 4, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born April 7, 1930, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Horace Varner and Juanita Brunson Varner. She was married to the late George Edward Bynum. She was a member of Greater Jerusalem A.M.E. Church in Gourdine. Survivors are: two sons, George Edward Bynum, Jr. of Lane; and Horace Bynum of Lane.
HUGHES -- Daisy Scott Hughes, 88, widow of Isaac Benjamin Hughes, died Monday, October 19, 1998, in Kingstree. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 21, 1998, in the Greeleyville United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery near Greeleyville directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Hughes was born in Salters, a daughter of the late Walter and Arrie Buddin Scott. Until recently, she had resided in North Charleston, where she was a longtime member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church and the Bradley Bible class. She served on the Cooper River Constituent school board from 1979 to 1990 and on the Cooper River Parks and Playground Commission from 1979 to 1997. She was a retired employee of Charleston Manufacturing Co. Survivors are: four daughters, Arrie H. Holt and Florence H. Carson, both of North Charleston; Runette H. Louthian of Columbia; and Faye H. Davis of Florence; and seven sisters, Helen Timmons of Salters; Evelyn Cain of Columbia; Edna Mims of Manning; Janet McCrea and Virginia Tedder, both of Kingstree; Gracie Scott of Lane; and Doris Tisdale of St. Stephen.
COOPER -- Mamie Mayes Cooper, 82, wife of William J. Cooper, died Oct. 21, 1998, in a Charleston hospital. Graveside services were held Fri., Oct. 23, 1998, in the Indiantown Presbyterian Church Cemetery directed by Morris Funeral Home. Mrs. Cooper was born in Mayesville, S.C., a daughter of the late James R. Mayes and the late Janie Rhodes Mayes. She was a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, a graduate of Mayesville High School and Converse College. Survivors are: her husband, William J. Cooper of the home; four sons, William J. Cooper, Jr. of Baton Rouge, La.; James M. Cooper of East Glacier, Mt.; Hugh M. Cooper of Columbia; and David S. Cooper of Atlanta, Ga.; and one sister, Janie M. Ferguson of Bishopville.
JOHNSON -- Frances McElveen Wall Johnson, widow of Allston Johnson, died Thursday, October 22, 1998, in a Georgetown hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 24, 1998, in the Nesmith Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Morris Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson was born in Georgetown, a daughter of the late Byron W. McElveen and Elizabeth Jane Williamson McElveen. She was a retired case worker for the Department of Social Services, a member of the Nesmith Baptist Church, a graduate of Winyah High School and Coastal Carolina College receiving her associate degree at age 60. She was first married to the late Frasier S. Wall, Sr. Survivors are: two sons, Frasier S. Wall, Jr. of Murrells Inlet; and Donald R. Wall of Hartsville; one daughter, Betty W. Nesmith of Nesmith; and one brother, Richard McElveen.
WASHINGTON -- Funeral services were held for Mrs. Rubie Hicks Cooper Washington, Monday, November 9, 1998, at New Friendship Freewill Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Bernard Paige and Bishop L. A. Burns. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Washington died Thursday, November 5, 1998, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born June 10, 1908, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Robert Hicks and Bina Harrison Hicks. She was a member of New Friendship Freewill Baptist Church, where she was Mother of the Church, member of the choir and former treasurer of the Missionary. Survivors are: one daughter, Evangelist Mary L. Barr of Kingstree; four step-daughters, Mrs. Nellie Pendergrass and Mrs. Bina Brockington, both of Kingstree; Mrs. Geraldine Hepburn and Mrs. Sarah Lease Bremby, both of Miami, FL; five step-sons, Fred Washington, James L. Washington; Joe Louis Washington, Jr. and Jack Washington, all of Miami, FL; and Johnny Barr of Kingstree; two brothers, Willie Hicks of Myrtle Beach; and Robert Hicks of Kingstree; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Ann Crouch and Mrs. Elease Anderson, both of Johnsonville; and Mrs. Magalene Cunningham of Kingstree; and a Goddaughter, Vivian Godwin of Washington, D.C.
FULTON -- Funeral services for James Windy "Junie" Fulton, Jr. were held Sunday, November 8, 1998, at Apostolic Faith Holiness Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. William McClary. Burial followed in Elijah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Fulton, 26, died Wednesday, November 4, 1998 in Kingstree. He was born October 8, 1972, in Kingstree, a son of James Windy Fulton, Sr. and Rebecca Scott Fulton. He was a member of Apostolic Faith Holiness Church. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Kingstree, are: two sons, Anterio Goodwin and Jamel Murphy, both of Kingstree; and one daughter, Cierra Johnson of Kingstree; two brothers, Arlo Fulton and Byant Fulton of Kingstree; three sisters, Antionette Fulton of Charlotte, N.C.; Leonetta Fulton and Telia Fulton of Kingstree; and his grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Fulton and Mrs. Margurite Scott, both of Kingstree.
EDWARDS -- Funeral services for Charlie McDonald were held Friday, November 6, 1998, at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Gourdine, conducted by Rev. C.C. Gordon. Burial followed in McKnight Cemetery in Gourdine directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. McDonald, 82, died Sunday, November 1, 1998, at his residence in Lane. He was born April 30, 1916, in Lane, a son of the late Moses McDonald and Mary Parson McDonald. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he served as class leader, Stewardess, Trustee Board and on the Prayer Band. He was a member of the Young Peoples Christian Benefit Association and Friendly Brothers Masonic Lodge No. 386 and Friendly Sisters Order of the Eastern Star #380. Survivors are: two sons, Charlie McDonald of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Johnny McDonald of Lane; one daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Gallishaw of Lane; six step-children, Mrs. Eleanor Rose and Ada Bell Tisdale of Greensboro, N.C.; Ruby Coe, William Coe and Blease Coe, all of Mansfield, Ohio; and Mrs. Thomasena Myers of Lake City.tree; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Sally Mae Cunningham of Kingstree.
MATTHEWS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Williams Matthews were held Saturday, November 14, 1998, at Union Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Willie Bryant. Burial followed in Cowhead Cemetery in Gourdin directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Matthews, 90, died Wed., Nov. 11, 1998, at Clarendon County Memorial Hospital in Manning. She was born April 1, 1908, in Greeleyville, a daughter of the late Mrs. Merietta Williams. She was a retired farmer. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she sang on the church choir. Survivors are: two sons, Howard Matthews and Fred Matthews, both of Baltimore, MD; six daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Myers of Chester, Pa.; Emma Lee Matthews, Roberta Matthews and Lillie Mae Matthews, all of Salters; Mrs. Ellen M. Small of Baltimore, MD; and Mrs. Josie M. McClary of Providence, Rhode Island.
