Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com THORNTON -- Margaret B. Thornton, 72, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999, in a New Jersey hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 28, 1999, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Williamson Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Thornton was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Maurlee and Thelma Baun Sternberg. She was a retired waitress and was married to the late Roy H. Thornton, Jr. Survivors are: four step-daughters, Grace Palinkas, Mary Konevia, Eleanor Garonski and Roseanne Sorrentino, all of Philadelphia, Pa.
MEEKS -- Agnes Cleora East Meeks, 89, formerly of Columbia and Panama City, FL; and widow of John B. Meeks, died Friday, February 26, 1999, at Mariner Healthcare East in Sumter. Funeral services for Mrs. Meeks were held Monday, March 1, 1999, in the Midway Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Dale Rawlings. Burial followed in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery directed by Stephens Funeral Home of Manning. Born in Dadeville, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo and Ella Hammock East. She was owner and manager of rental cottages in Florida, a member of Dutch Fork Baptist Church in Irmo and was first married to the late George Craig. Survivors are: one daughter, Helen Epps of New Zion; two sons, Jack Craig of Winter Haven, FL; and Jerry Brooks of Oakridge, TN; one step-son, J.B. Meeks, Jr. of LaGrange, N.C.; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Ruth Owens of Columbus, Ga.
MCCREA -- Funeral services for Deacon George McCrea were held Saturday, February 27, 1999, at Trinity Believer's Holiness Church in Kingstree, conducted by Elder Linwood Cooper. Burial followed at Kingstree Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Deacon McCrea died Tuesday, February 23, 1999, at Kingstree Nursing Facility. He was born October 19, 1918, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Randolph and Jannie Singletary McCrea. He was the step-son of the late Mrs. Bessie Dansby McCrea. He was a farmer and logger. He was a member of Trinity Holiness Church where he served as Senior Deacon and a member of the Senior Choir. Survivors are: two sons, George McCrea, Jr. and Louis McCrea, both of Kingstree; four brothers, Edward Bryant of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Gus McCrea of Largo, FL.; Thomas McCrea of St. Louis, MO; and Nathaniel McCrea of Columbia; and five sisters, Marie Cunningham, Minister Sarah Outing, Doris Barr, Mary McFarlin and Alberta McCrea, all of Kingstree.
MORRIS -- Mrs. RCola B. Morris, 71, widow of Harry B. Morris, died Wednesday, February 24, 1999, in a Florence hospital after an illness. Funeral services were held February 27, 1999 in the Cades Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Gaskin Cemetery, directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Morris was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter, of the late Edward L. Baylor and Jessie Benton Baylor. She was a former employee of Wentworth Manufacturing Company of Lake City. She was a member of the Cades Baptist Church, where she served on numerous committees and was a member of the W.M.U. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Faye McDougal of Lake City and Mrs. Brenda Whitley of Darlington; two sons, Harry ³Bert² Morris of Lake City and Eddie Morris of Pamplico; one brother, Atwood Baylor of Kingstree and two sisters, Doris Lindsey and Audrey Fryar, both of Charleston.
BRADHAM -- Blyth Disher Bradham, 56, died Saturday, February 27, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, March 1, 1999, in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Bradham was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late W.R. Disher and Maude Matthews Disher. She was a graduate of Greeleyville High School and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Survivors are: her husband, W.A. Bradham, Jr. of Greeleyville; one son, William A. Bradham, III, of Bonneau; three sisters, Addie Belle Hodge, Viney Faye Gamble and Patsy Mason, all of Greeleyville; and two brothers, W.R. Disher, Jr. of Folly Beach; and Charles Disher of Greeleyville.
MCFADDEN -- Funeral services for Willis "Rushen" McFadden, Jr. were held Saturday, February 6, 1999, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Willie Wilson and Rev. James E. Council. Burial followed in the White Oak Cemetery in Lake City directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. McFadden, 64, died Monday, February 1, 1999, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston. He was born January 1, 1935, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Willis McFadden, Sr. and Anna McElveen McFadden. He was a member of Saint Mary United Methodist Church. He was employed as a farmer and he also owned and operated his business for many years. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Cassandra McLendon of Thomasville, N.C.; and Crystal Pendergrass of Kingstree; three step-children, Nell Williams of Kingstree and Doris Graham and Dante Green, both of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Johnnie Pearl Pompey of Kingstree; Mrs. Ruth Washington of Lane; Mrs. Esther Coates of Middletown, Ct. and Mrs. Meddie Footman of Bronx, N.Y.; and three brothers, Randy McFadden of Kingstree; and Cleophis McFadden and Billy McFadden, both of Bronx, N.Y.
DUKES -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Lou "Mallie" Mack Dukes were held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at the William N. Redmond Memorial Chapel, conducted by Rev. James E. Council. Burial followed at White Oak Cemetery in Lake City directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Dukes died Sunday, January 31, 1999, at her residence in Kingstree. She was born March 27, 1918, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of the late James Mack, Sr. and Margaret Shaw Mack Murphy. She was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors are: one son, Louis Dukes, Jr. of the home; one daughter, Rosina Dukes of the home; four brothers, James ³Sassy² Mack, Jr., Dave Mack and Alton Murphy, all of Kingstree; and Walter Murphy of Rochester, N.Y.; and one sister, Mrs. Gullie Shaw of Kingstree.
DUKE -- James Ashley Duke, 53, died Sunday, January 17, 1999, at his residence. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Duke was born January 4, 1946, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Helen Morris Duke Casper and Perry Alton Duke. He was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mattie Plyler Duke of New Zion; five daughters, Nina Allen of Summerville; Nancy Nettles of Pineville; Judy McClary, Cheryl Dubose and Karen Burroughs, all of Kingstree; two sons, Wally Dukes of Kingstree; and Walter Dukes of Albany, Ga.; and his step-father, Robert Casper of Rockledge, Florida.
BRANTON -- Joseph Stephenson Branton and Kertner Scott Branton, infant twin sons, of David Branton and Jean Stephenson Branton, died February 8, 1999, in a hospital. Graveside services were held Wednesday, February 10, 1999, at Dorchester Memory Gardens, according to James A. Dyal Funeral Home in Summerville. The infants were born February 8, 1999. Survivors, in addition to the parents of Summerville, are: paternal grandparents, Henry and Gertrude K. Branton of Summerville; and maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Frances Stephenson of Kingstree.
WILLIAMSON -- Mrs. Isla Mae Rowell Williamson, 80, widow of Frank R. Williamson, died Monday, February 8, 1999, in a Florence nursing home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 10, 1999, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Williamson was born in Trio, a daughter of the late William Thomas Rowell, Sr. and Isla Jeffords Rowell. She was a graduate of Winthrop College with a BS in education. She retired after 32 years as a school teacher, having taught in Williamsburg and Blakeley schools. She was a member of Trio United Methodist Church, where she had served as Superintendent of the Sunday school and as a Sunday school teacher. Survivors are: one daughter, Jennie Williamson Holt of Kingstree; and four sisters, Ruthalee R. Wallace of Edgefield; Martha R. Sarratt of Tampa, FL; Marion R. McCormac of Debordieu Colony, Georgetown; and Corinthia R. Truesdale of Kershaw.
