Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com HAMMOND -- Funeral services for John G. Hammond were held Friday, May 7, 1999, at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel, conducted by Rev. Bruce Hancock and Rev. Rush Rinehart. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville. Hammond, 80, died Thursday, May 6, 1999. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Jesse Holland and Kate Sowell Hammond. He was a retired plant manager of Bordons Ice Cream Company in Greenville. He was also a World War II Army Veteran, a member of First Baptist Church and a member of Walden Lodge #274. Survivors are: his wife, Betty Holland Harvin Hammond; one step-daughter, Johnslyn Harvin Pase of Camden; and one step-son, John William Harvin, Jr. of Kingstree.
STRONG -- Mrs. Era Flowers Strong died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in an Orangeburg nursing facility. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 29, 1999, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Strong was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Letha McClam Flowers and Timothy Clarence Flowers. She was a graduate of Lake City High School and attended Winthrop College. She taught school for a number of years in Williamsburg and other counties. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Survivors are: one son, John E. Strong of Kingstree; two sisters, Dorothy F. Boyd of Lake City; and Margie F. Lawrimore of Hemingway.
FEW -- Memorial services for Mrs. Dorothy Dobbin Haughton Few were held Wednesday, May 5, 1999, in St. Albans Episcopal Church in Kingstree directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Few was born August 20, 1905, in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of Amelia Stenger and James Cochran Dobbin. She attended Converse College in Spartanburg and was a secretary and a homemaker. Mrs. Few was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church, where she was a longtime organist and she was also an avid bridge player. She was first married to the late William Graham Haughton and then to the late Marion L. Few. Survivors are: two sons, Bill Haughton of Roswell, GA; and Jim Haughton of Kingstree.
HARRIS -- Funeral services for Bonneau S. Harris were held Saturday, May 1, 1999, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in New Market Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Harris, 83, died Wednesday, April 28, at his residence. He was born in Pendleton, S.C., a son of Maria Louise Sloan Harris and Bonneau Harris. He served in World War II in France. He was a retired dairyman Survivors are; his wife, Evelyn Elliott Harris of Kingstree; three sons, B. S. Harris, Jr. and Ricky Harris, both of Kingstree; Gene Harris of Florence; four daughters, Shirley Wilder, Paulette Rose, Suzanne McKenzie, all of Kingstree; and Doris Tilton of Manning.
BROWN -- Mrs. Ellen H. Brown, 52, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 2, 1999, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late James N. Hinnant, Sr. and Lois Williams Hinnant. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Lander College. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, where she was involved with several church groups and activities. Survivors are: her husband, Danny Brown of Kingstree; two daughters, Jennifer McKenzie Parrott and Danielle Brown Miles, both of Kingstree; one sister, Nancy H. Brown of Kingstree.
TANNER -- Mrs. Mary Ellen P. Tanner, 83, widow of Wresley J. Tanner, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, in a Florence nursing center. Funeral services were held Friday, May 14, 1999, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel in Lake City. Burial followed in Eaddy-Ford Cemetery in Johnsonville directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Tanner was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late John Pinckney Pooser and Clara Hilton Pooser. She was a homemaker and a member of Cades Baptist Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Rose Mary T. Brown of Cades; four sons, W. James Tanner, Jr. of Sumter; Ray Edward Tanner of Johnıs Island; John Bruce Tanner and Larry L. Tanner, both of Cades; one sister, Vernice Capps of Charleston; and two brothers, Hubert Pooser and Herman Pooser, both of Charleston.
GAMBLE -- Frances Elizabeth (Betsy) Gamble, 46, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Ms. Gamble was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Mrs. Adelle Ward Gamble and the late Thomas David Gamble. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Greeleyville, are: two sisters, Barbara G. White of Manning; and Marcie G. Rigby of Kingstree.
BAKER -- Carl Plexico (Plexie) Baker, Jr., 57, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, 1999, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Baker was born in Kingstree, a son of the late Carl P. Baker, Sr. and Carey Jane Parrott Baker. He was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and attended Clemson University. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired insurance agent. He was a member of the Boykin Spaniel Society and a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Edith Almind Baker of Kingstree; one son, Carl P. Baker, III, of Freehold, N. J.; two sisters, Sarah B. Carson of Kingstree; and Melinda B. Mixon of Mt. Pleasant; and one brother, David C. Baker of Lithonia, GA.
KINARD -- Lydia Ann Thomas Kinard, 49, died Monday, May 10, 1999, in a Manning hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Kinard was born in Rock Hill, a daughter of Mrs. Zuline Alsbrooks Thomas and the late Marvin Thomas. She was a graduate of St. Stephens High School and a homemaker. Survivors, in addition to her mother of Florence, are: her husband, Thomas Kinard of Greeleyville; two daughters, Cheryl K. Ward of Sumter; and Bridget K. Wise of Manning; one son, Thomas D. Kinard of Jefferson; and two sisters, Vonnie McKenzie and Donna Ashley, both of Florence.
COKER -- Wofford James Coker, 69, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday, May 14, 1999, in the Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Coker was born in Lake City, a son of the late S. W. and Janie Kirby Coker. He graduated from Hebron High School and Clemson University and was employed by Santee Electric Co-op until his retirement. He was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Coker of Kingstree; one daughter, Jennifer C. Altman of Florence; two sons, David Craig Coker of Mt. Pleasant and James T. Coker of Kingstree; and four sisters, Louisa C. Tyler of Kingstree; Madeline C. Lyerly, Ola Mae C. Welch and Myrtle C. Cook, all of Lake City.
