Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com MONTGOMERY -- Funeral services for Harry Montgomery were held Sunday, August 3, 1997, at St. John Baptist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by Rev. Talbert Dickson. Burial followed at the churchyard cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Montgomery, 61, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at the Toumey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. He was born October 12, 1935, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Oliver and Ethel Mae Giles Montgomery. He was a member of Biblical Christian Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Angienether W. Montgomery of the home; eight sons, Ernest Whack of Salters; Rev. Harry James Montgomery of Cordesville, S.C.; Rodney Montgomery of Goose Creek; Otis Montgomery, Jerome Montgomery and Donald Montgomery, all of Greeleyville; and Quintin Montgomery of the home; three daughters, Roberta Stewart of Miami, FL; Mrs. Patricia Matthews of Kingstree; and Mrs. Ethel Mae Murray of Foreston; two brothers, Oliver C. Montgomery and Ernest Montgomery, both of Greeleyville; and one sister, Mrs. Gladys McBride of Charleston.
MILLS -- Roland Dow Mills, Jr., 85, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, in Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East. Graveside services were held Friday, August 1, 1997, in the Manning Cemetery directed by Stephens Funeral Home. Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Roland D. Mills, Sr. and Emma Burgess Mills. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School. He volunteered for service during World War II and served in the U.S. Army with duty in the South Pacific theatre, including New Guinea, New Caledonia and Guadalcanal. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered during combat overseas. He was member of the Manning Lions Club and served on the committee to form the Little League Boys Baseball teams. He was co-owner of the first self-service grocery store in Manning and later co-owner of Clarendon Furniture Company from which he retired when the business was sold in 1975. Mr. Mills was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68 and the St. Peter's Masonic Lodge #54 AFM. Mr. Mills was longtime member of the Manning United Methodist Church where he achieved over 30 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School. He also served as treasurer of the building fund for the educational building. Survivors are: his wife, Marguerite Cain Mills of Manning; and three sons, Robert B. Mills of Manning; William C. Mills of Mt. Pleasant; and David N. Mills of Gladstone, N.J.
MURPHY -- Funeral services for Warren Murphy, Jr. were held Saturday, July 26, 1997, at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel in Kingstree. Burial followed at Elijah United Methodist Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Murphy, 61, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, in New York. He was born June 14, 1936, in Williamsburg County, the son of Mrs. Annie Cooper Murphy and the late Warren Murphy, Sr. He was a self-employed mechanic. He was a member of Elijah United Methodist. Survivors are: two brothers, Joenathan "Son" Murphy, Jr. of Kingstree; and Thomas Murphy of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Pendergrass of Kingstree; and Mrs. Jannie Wilson of Miami, Fla.
COOPER -- Funeral services for Bertha Cooper were held Friday, July 25, 1997, at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. Dr. Charles McLane. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Ms. Cooper, 69, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born October 28, 1928, a daughter of the late Sam Cooper and Minnie McKnight Cooper. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She attended South Carolina State College, where she received her degree in social studies. She furthered her education at New York University, City College and University of South Carolina. She began her professional career as a school teacher in Walterboro, S.C. She taught school in Williamsburg County for 39 years. She was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. She served as superintendent and assistant superintendent of Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher, a Missionary Society member and on the Stewardess Board. She was a member of the NAACP, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Nation Education Association. Surviving is one nephew reared as her own, Zachery Cooper of Florence.
PRESSLEY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Pressley were held Saturday, July 19, 1997, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Nathan Morris. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. churchyard cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Pressley, 40, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston. She was born January 22, 1957, a daughter of Henry C. Pressley and the late Rachel Gamble Pressley. She was employed as a housekeeper in the hotel industry. She was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Survivors, in addition to her father of Salters; are: three daughters, Detra R. Pressley, Monique S. Pressley and Jamie S. Pressley, all of Salters; four brothers, Henry Pressley, Jr., Clarence Pressley and Johnny Pressley, all of Salters; and Charles Pressley of Florence; and five sisters, Mrs. Ruther Bell Nelson, Mrs. Racheal Lee Chisolm, Mrs. Christine Miller, Delores Pressley and Veronica Pressley, all of Salters.
BROWN -- Bennett A. Brown, 68, of Atlanta and Pawleys Island died August 2, 1997. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 5, 1997, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, conducted by Rev. W. Frank Harrington and Rev. Samuel Shumate. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Union Presbyterian Church in Salters directed by H. M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel. Brown was chairman of NationsBank Corporation when he retired in 1992. He was professionally responsible for leading the Atlanta-based C&S Banks out of a financial crisis in the late 1970s and into prominence in the 1980s. An elder at Atlanta's Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Brown was active in both professional and community service. He was a past president of the Bankers Roundtable and an active member and director of the International Monetary Conference, which gave him and Mary Alice the opportunity to attend meetings in Spain, Switzerland, Japan and Belgium. He was also a former president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He received the Salvation Army's William Booth Award in 1986 for fund-raising leadership and just recently he and wife received the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest honor. Survivors are: his wife, Mary Alice Rustin Brown; three daughters, Charlette Brown Dixon of Atlanta; Leila Brown Armknecht of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Katherine Brown Ohlhausen of Atlanta; and one son, Bennett Alexander Brown, III, of Temple, Ga. Barbara Jean Bland Jones, 51, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, in a Sumter hospital. Memorial services were held Saturday, August 2, 1997, at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Virginia Beach, Va. directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Jones was born in Norfolk, Va., a daughter of Albert and Thelma Bland. Survivors, in addition to her of Norfolk, are: her husband, Floyd Jones, Sr. of Kingstree; one daughter, Raenette Robinson of Hawaii; one son, Eric Jones of Hawaii; two sisters, Frances Bland of Martinsburg, W. Va. and Rose Bland, both of Norfolk; and one brother, Albert Bland, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.
GORDON -- Funeral services for the Rev. Benjamin James "B.J." Gordon, Jr. were held Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. James Alston, Vice Moderator of the Williamsburg Missionary Baptist Association and Ministries. Burial followed in Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Rev. Gordon, 64, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at McLeod Hospital in Florence. He was born November 20, 1932, in Waycross, Ga., the son of the late B.J. Gordon, Sr. and Rethealean Newman Gordon. He graduated from Tomlinson High School. He acquired a degree in Theology and Education from Claflin College in Orangeburg. He later matriculated at Gamon Theological Seminary School of Divinity in Atlanta, Ga., South Carolina State College School of Graduate Studies, Orangeburg and Florence Darlington Technical College in Florence. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Friendship College. He began his formal ministry at age 19. During his career, he pastored Hickory Hill Baptist, Silent Grove Baptist Church, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church and Wilson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church. He was Moderator of the Williamsburg Missionary Baptist Educational Association and Ministries. He was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 1973. He represented Williamsburg County District No. 101 for 18 years. While in general assembly, he became a member of the Water Resources Commission, a member of the Governor's Advisory Medicare Committee, Rules Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee and Committee on Hunger. He was recognized as one of the greatest orators in the House of Representatives. He was designated as "Who's Who in American Politics and received the "Personality of the South" award. He was also president of the State Welfare Rights Department. He was a licensed barber and auctioneer. He founded Gordon's 521 Auction Company, Williamsburg Residential Care Facility and developed Spring Gully Residential Development. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was Master Mason and a member of Prospect Masonic Lodge No. 404. He organized the Interdenominational Singing Convention in Kingstree and Andrews. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Susie Johnson Gordon of Andrews; two daughters, Mrs. Jacques Jackson of Andrews; and Mrs. Barbara A. Rivers of Orangeburg; four sisters, Mrs. Bernice Barr of Kingstree; Mrs. Gwendolyn Gaskin of Roselle, N.J.; Mrs. Melloncey Blount of Palm Coast, FL; and Mrs. JoAnna Shephard of Garden City Beach.
BROWN -- Funeral services for Gordon Brown, Sr. were held Tuesday, August 5, 1997, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Salters, conducted by Rev. Rufus L. Snowden. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Brown, 75, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. He was born May 15, 1922, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Lawrence and Sytara Shaw Brown. Survivors: seven sons, David Brown and Joe Brown, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; Leroy Brown and Charles Brown, both of Salters; Sammie Brown of the home; Willie Brown of Lake City; and John Brown of Kingstree; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Brown Bettard of the home; one brother, Ulysses Brown of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three sisters, Margie Brown of Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. Mary Lee Young and Sarah Graham, both of Salters; and Roddie Graham of Baltimore, Md.
COOK -- Charles Wayne Cook, Sr., Col. U.S. Army (retired) of Petersburg, Va., died Saturday, August 2, 1997, in Southside Regional Medical Center. A graveside funeral service was held Monday, August 4, 1997, in Merchants Hope Cemetery. Col. Cook was born in Kingstree, a son of the late John Wesley and Estelle Coward Cook. He was recipient of the Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, National Defense Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He also worked with Rehabilitation Unit at Central State Hospital for 14 years. Survivors are: his wife, Mary B. Cook of Petersburg; two sons, Charles Wayne Cook, Jr. of Enterprise, LA; and William B. Cook of Dinwiddie County; and two daughters, Estelle Fullerton of Hopewell; and Mary C. Poythress of Virginia Beach.
COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Pheobe Cooper were held Wednesday, August 6, 1997, at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Lake City, conducted by Rev. Haynes Gainey. Burial followed in Willie Cooper Cemetery in Lake City directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Cooper, 83, died Sunday, August 2, 1997, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. She was born September 26, 1913, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Rosa and Sam Cooper. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Joint Stock Lodge Number 79. Survivors are: three sisters, Mrs. Flora Wilson of the home; Mrs. Lattie Brown of Queens, New York; and Mrs. Janie Mae McKnight of Miami.
