Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com NIXON -- Funeral services for Albert Nixon were held Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Evangelistic Way of the Cross Church in Kingstree, conducted by Bishop Roosevelt Fulton. Burial followed at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Andrews directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Nixon, 43, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Broward General Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was born March 23, 1956, in Andrews, a son of Govan Nixon and the late Mrs. Louise Hammond Nixon. He was a member of the Church of God in Christ in Florida. Survivors, in addition to his father, are: 11 sisters and brothers, John Edward Nixon, Mrs. Blondell Heard, Govan III Nixon, Mrs. Mary Louise Martin, Levi Nixon, Mrs. Lurleen Nixon, William Nixon, Mrs. Ethel Nixon, Walter Nixon, Mrs. Barbara Jean Daniels and Marvin Nixon.
FROEDGE -- Mary Grace Todd Froedge, 67, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at her residence. Funeral services were held Friday, July 9, 1999, in the Kingstree First Baptist Church. Burial followed in McClary Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Froedge was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Rufus and Martha Tisdale Todd. She was an employee of Milliken Co. in Kingstree and a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. Survivors are; one daughter, Gayle F. Johnson of Lane; one step-daughter, Vickie Ayers of Sumter; three brothers, J. R. Todd of Melburne, FL; William Todd of Summerville; and Jack Todd of Castle Hayne, North Carolina; and three sisters, Florence McCants of John Island; Margie Casselman of Andrews; and Betty Ward of Moncks Corner.
BENNETT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Learlene "Mallie" Mitchell Bennett were held Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Greater St. John A.M.E. Church in Trio, conducted by Reverend Melvin McClennon. Burial followed in Bennett Cemetery in Trio directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Bennett, 75, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at her residence in Trio. She was born February 6, 1924, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Sidney Mitchell and Fannie Mitchum. She was a retired employee of Clemson Extension in Kingstree. She was a member of Greater St. John A.M.E. Church, where she worked as church secretary and class leader of Class #7, the missionary society, president of the senior choir and teacher of Class #3. She was also a member of Blakeley Homemakers Club and Trio Senior Citizens. Survivors are: her husband, James Dunbar Bennett of Trio; two sons, James E. Bennett of Washington, D.C.; and Douglas Bennett of Columbia; eight daughters, Mrs. Myrtle C. Wilson of Salters; Mrs. Sandra Cave of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Francis Murphy, Mildred Bennett and Bonita Bennett, all of Trio; Mrs. Johnnie Ferguson of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Beverly B. James of Florence; and Mrs. Libby B. Tisdale of Summerville; six sisters, Mrs. Queen Wright and Mrs. Fannie M. Scott, both of Trio; Mrs. Catherine Cooper of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Parthenia Collins of Queens, New York; Mrs. Ludia Brown of Bronx, New York; and Mrs. Mary Pressley of Nesmith; and two brothers, David Mitchell of Trio; and Ernest Mitchell of Bronx, New York; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
RILEY -- Graveside services for Camille Wyman Daniels Riley, 60, were held Monday, June 28, 1999, in Denmark Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Ray Smith and John Vernon Platt. Mrs. Riley died June 26. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joel W. Wyman. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of South Carolina with degrees in both English and pharmacy. She taught school in Sumter and Williston before returning to USC to get her degree in pharmacy. She was the former co-owner of Daniels' Pharmacy in Denmark with her first husband, the late Paul Loy Daniels and afterwards practiced pharmacy in five counties in the midlands until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Orangeburg. Survivors are: her husband, William B. "Bill" Riley, Sr. of Orangeburg; three daughters, Wendy Daniels, Mandy Baxley and Lorie McDonald, all of Greenville; one son, William B. "Bai" Riley, Jr. of USC-Columbia; and one sister, Joanne Turner of Denmark.
GREEN -- Mrs. Lucy Wright Green, 75, of Georgetown, died July 16, 1999, at Roper Hospital. Funeral services for were held July 22, at the Light House of Jesus Christ, conducted by Rev. Floyd Knowlin and Elderess Hattie Tompkins. Burial followed at Hopewell A.M.E. Church Cemetery directed by McKnight Fraser Funeral Home-Georgetown Chapel. Mrs. Green, a homemaker, was the daughter of the late Stephen and Helen Lawrence Wright. She was a member of Revival Fellowship in Wilmington, De., in 1966. Returning to S.C., she became a member of Hopewell A.M.E. Church. Later she joined Mount Moriah U.A.W.B. Church. Survivors are: six daughters, Mary Batman of Wilmington, De.; Anna Blackstock of Georgetown; Michelle Green of Marietta, Ga.; Lois Castro-Nichols, Brenda Mathews and Cindy Burgos, all of Wilmington, De.; six sons, Walter Green, Jr., Deacon Bobby Green and Danny Green, all of Georgetown; Tommy Green of Dover, De.; Roddy Green and Larry Green, both of Wilmington, De.; and one sister, Viola Ladson of Georgetown.
MITCHUM -- Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Mitchum were held Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Hines Chapel Holiness Church in Andrews, conducted by Elder David Evans. Burial followed in Broughton Cemetery in Trio directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Mitchum, 98, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Prince George Nursing Facility in Georgetown. She was born May 1, 1911, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Kevin Mitchum and Lula Mitchum. She was a member of St. James Temple. Survivors are: six sons, Alfred Mitchum of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Calvin Mitchum of Clearwater, Fla.; Thomas Mitchum and Willie J. Mitchum, both of Trio; Andrew Mitchum and Preston Mitchum, both of Andrews; one daughter, Mrs. Lula Mae Strong of Kingstree; and two sisters, Mrs. Annie Eddy of Lake City; and Mrs. Ester Glenn of Durham, N.C.
SMALLS -- Funeral services for Joe Leroy Smalls were held July 23, 1999, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Michael J. Frost. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home. Mr. Smalls, 51, died July 18, 1999, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He is the son of George and Ethel Smalls. He was a 1967 graduate of Howard High School in Georgetown. He joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and served for seven years. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Infantry's badge and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Pawleys Island, are; one son, Joe Smalls, Jr. of Norwalk, Conn., four sisters, Ethel Boykin of Norwalk, Conn.; Sarah Robinson of Bridgeport, Conn; Rosetta Godbolt of Pawleys Island; and Georgie Smalls of Alpharetta, Ga.; and one brother, Ernest Smalls of Goldsboro, N.C.
COX -- Louise Boyd Cox, 87, widow of Richard Lofton Cox, Sr., died July 19, at her residence. Graveside funeral services were held Wed., July 21, 1999, at Old Johnsonville United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Hal Norton. Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Cox was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Charles and Beulah Marshall Boyd. She attended Coker College and was a former teacher in the Hemingway schools. She was a member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: one son, R. Lofton Cox, Jr. of Litchfield; and four sisters, Mamie Lee Mishoe and Bevis Shepard, both of Georgetown; Frances Lovelace of Tarboro, N.C.; and JoAnne Sires of Kingstree.
OLIVER -- John Moultrie Oliver of Greeleyville, formerly of Fayetteville, died Friday, July 16, 1999, in Mars Hill. Funeral services were held Monday, July 19, 1999. Capps Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Oliver was born May 29, 1921, in South Carolina, the son of the late Bettie Register and Ed Whiddon of Fayetteville and the late Samuel Peter Oliver of South Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was most recently a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II, he returned to business in Fayetteville. In 1965, he set up and opened the Regional Industrial Development Office in Washington, N.C. He was the Development Representative for the Department of Commerce and Industry. He became a director of the N. C. Society of Engineers. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 18 years. He also served as executive director of the Halifax County Industrial Development Commission. He served as chairman of the Halifax County American Revolution Bicentennial Committee. Survivors are: his wife, Eva Boatwright Oliver; one son, John M. Oliver, Jr. of Severna Park, Md.; two daughters, Lynn Steen of Mars Hill; and Beth Duke of Weaverville; and one sister, Itie May Clayton of Fayetteville.
RANDEL -- Jesse Morgan Randel, Jr., 80, a retired public school administrator, died July 28, 1999, at Beaufort Memorial. Memorial services were held Friday, July 30, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church in Beaufort. Burial followed in Newberry directed by Anderson Funeral Home. Mr. Randel was born May 8, 1919, in Loraine, Ohio, a son of the late Jesse Morgan Randel, Sr. and Ethel R. Owings. He was a graduate of Newberry College. He was an outstanding athlete and was inducted into the Newberry Hall of Fame in 1982. He was a Navy veteran of World War II having served as lieutenant. He was an executive officer on a landing craft infantry ship in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific war zones including June 6 "D-Day" in Normandy. After discharge, he served as captain in the Artillery Unit of the National Guard in Kingstree. His career in public school systems begin in Olanta, as a teacher and coach. In the Kingstree public school system, he served as high school principal and assistant coach. He came to Beaufort in 1955 as principal of Beaufort High School, served as superintendent, and after 38 years retired in 1981 as a public school administrator. He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Chancel Choir. He was recently honored as Elder Emeritus for his service to the church community. Survivors are: his wife, Julia Smith Randel; one daughter, Julie Randel LaGrone; and three sisters, Mary Roth of Ohio; Glenna Verba of Colorado; and Beverly Board of California.
