Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com HAMPTON -- Clyde Wilma Johnson Hampton, 90, died Monday, February 28, 2000, in a Florence nursing home. Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery near Timmonsville directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Hampton was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Wilbert Eugene Johnson and Mary Belle McLendon Johnson. She was retired from the Williamsburg County School District and was a member of Lane Baptist Church, where she had served as organist and pianist. Surviving is one son, William E. Hampton, Sr. of Florence.
GODWIN -- Mrs. Annie Dell G. Godwin, 70, widow of A. J. "Jr." Godwin, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in the Wilson Medical Clinic in Darlington. Funeral services were held March 8, 2000, in the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Godwin was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Ardell Gamble and Annie Laurie Infinger Gamble. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and retired from Kingstree Manufacturing Company after 30 years service. She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Kings-tree. Survivors are: two sons, James Larry Godwin of Florence; and H. Dell Godwin of Kingstree; one sister, Mrs. Ren Carter of Lake City; and one brother, Buddy Gamble of Manning.
BEASLEY -- Funeral services for Marion Wayne Beasley, 57, were held March 2, 2000, at Hebron United Methodist Church, Lee Co., conducted by the Rev. Carolyn Malphus. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. He died Feb. 28. Born in Sumter, he was a son of Francis Marion "Buster" Beasley and the late Hazel Millsap Beasley. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. He was employed by Sonoco Products Company as a project engineer. Survivors are: his wife, Betty "Bebe" Prosser Beasley of Bishopville; three sons, Scott Beasley, Todd Beasley, both of Hartsville; and Matthew Beasley of Bishopville; one daughter, Amy Beasley of Bishopville; two sisters, Helen Puckhaber of Lexington; and Frances "Bunchie" Jordan of Bishopville; and one brother, William Boyd Beasley of Hampton, NJ.
BRIGGS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Brown Briggs were held March 11, 2000, at Central Holiness Church in Lake City, conducted by Elder James Hanna. Burial followed in the St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Salters directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home. Briggs, 76, died March 6, at Southland Health Care Center in Florence. She was born May 11, 1923, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Mrs. Louise Jackson Brown and the late Sam Derrick Brown. She was a member of Central Holiness Church. She was married to the late Jerry Briggs. Survivors, in addition to her mother of the home, are: one son, Sammie Brown of Columbia; and two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Stuckey and Mrs. Carrie B. Cockfield, both of Lake City.
BURGESS -- Funeral services for Althea "Alafair" Theo McClam Burgess were held Sat., March 11, at Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church in Kingstree, conducted by Bishop Roosevelt Fulton. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mother Burgess, 91, died Wed., March 8, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. She was born July 2, 1908, in Florence County, the daughter of the late Vance and Eliza Durant McClam. She was a member of Evangelistic Temple Way of the Cross Church, where she served as Mother of the church and a member of the choir. She was married to the late Simon Burgess, Sr. Survivors are: two daughters, Ivory Dell Staggers and Anna Pearl McCrea, both of Kingstree; four sons, Henry Burgess of Brentwood, NY; Simon Burgess of Brooklyn, NY; Billy Burgess and Legrant Burgess, both of the Bronx, NY; and three sisters, Elouise McRea of Lake City; Mary Etta McClary of Paterson, NJ; and Helen Johnson of Kingstree.
GRAHAM -- Geneva Britt Graham, 86, widow of James F. Graham, died Thurs., March 9, 2000, in Roper Hospital in Charleston. Graveside services were held Sunday, March 12, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville, conducted by the Rev. Hampton I. Perry. Burial was directed by Stephens Funeral Home. Born July 12, 1913, in Lakeview, SC, she was a daughter of the late Monroe and Vera Hayes Britt. She was a retired LPN and a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church. Survivors are: three daughters, Glenda Biegner of Greeleyville; Charlotte Martin of Charleston; and Bonnie Tucker of New Port, NC; and one sister, Eva Hammond of Greenville, NC. Pall bearers were grandsons, Mark Condon, David Biegner, John Loy, Shawn Foster, Jimmy Funderburk and Bruce Tucker.
GREEN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Bernetha McGill Green were held Monday, March 6, 2000, at St. James A.M.E. Church in Gourdine, conducted the Rev. Jack Dais and the Rev. Jerome Wilson. Burial followed in the churchıs cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Green died March 1, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born May 7, 1924, in Gourdine, a daughter of the late Jessie and Etta McGill. She was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church and was a member of the Stewardess Board. Survivors are: her husband, Matthew Green of Lane; two sons, Christopher White of Kingstree; and Matthew Green, Jr. of Charlotte, NC.; one daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Green Dukes of Salters; four sisters, Mrs. Nettie Brown of Petersburg, VA; Mrs. Virgeree Berry and Mrs. Rosa Lee Priliou, both of Jersey City, NJ; and Susan Conyers of Lane; and one brother, Heyward McGill of Jersey City, NJ.
PASLEY -- Funeral services for Lloyd Pasley were held March 9, 2000, at Chavis A.M.E. Church in Hemingway, conducted by the Rev. Jessie Marshall. Burial followed in Millpond Cemetery in Hemingway directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Pasley died Sunday, March 5, at his residence in Hemingway. He was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Grant Pasley and Sara Hughes Pasley. He was a former employee of Wellman Industries in Johnsonville and a member of Chavis A.M.E. Church, where he served as a Trustee Emeritus. He was a member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge #471, where he was a charter member. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Ruth Brown Pasley of the home; one nephew reared as a son, Dale L. Brown of Elgin; three brothers, Orrie Pasley of Hemingway; H. B. Pasley of Orangeburg; and Marion Pasley of Hemingway; one sister, Mrs. Edith Mae Hughes of Hemingway; and one niece reared in the home, Mrs. Jan Pinkckney of Washington, DC.
McCUTCHEN -- Funeral services for James F. McCutchen were held Thurs., March 9, 2000, at St. James A.M.E. Church in Gourdine, conducted by the Rev. Jack Dais. Burial followed in the church's cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral. McCutchen, 77, died March 2, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born April 12, 1923, a son of Mrs. Viola Darby. He was a retired farmer and was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Lane; are: his wife, Mrs. Mary Murray McCutchen of Lane; three sons, James Edward McCutchen of Lane; Moultrie Lee McCutchen of Boston, MA; and Henry Lee McCutchen of Brockton, MA; five daughters, Mrs. Christina Major, Mrs. Sylvia Kellahan, Mrs. Ruth Ann McCutchen, all of Ft. Myers, FL.; Mrs. Rosetta Maxwell of San Antonio, TX and Minister Mary A. Wilson of Salters; and one sister, Mrs. Rosa Bell Wilson of Lane.
PHILLIPS -- Helen Daggett Phillips, 78, widow of W. T. Phillips, Jr., died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in a Florence nursing home. Funeral services were held Friday in Cedar Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. C. B. Dunn. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Phillips was born in Georgetown County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Tillman and Adelle Catherine Voss Daggett. She was a retired salesperson. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where she had served on all women's committees of the church. Survivors are: one son, William Thomas Phillips, III, of Dayville, CT; and three nephews she raised, George T. Phillips, James M. Phillips and J. David Phillips, all of Kingstree.
