Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com GUY M. GODWIN -- Guy M. Godwin, 67, died Saturday, September 23, 2000, in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Monday, September 25, 2000, in the Lee Cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mr. Godwin was born in Florence County, a son of the late Page G. Godwin, Sr. and Mattie McCutcheon Godwin. He was a graduate of Clemson University with a B.S. in engineering and had graduate degrees in math and school administration from the Citadel. He was a retired school administrator for Williamsburg County Schools, serving as principal of Kingstree High School, C.E. Murray High School and Kingstree Junior High School. He was a farmer. He was a member of the Greeleyville United Methodist Church, where he served as the chairperson of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and as a Sunday school teacher. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Dixie Burch Godwin of Greeleyville; two daughters, Mrs. Cindy McClendon of Rock Hill; and Mrs. Guyeth Nash of Rome, GA; and three brothers, Page Godwin, Ray Godwin and Sandy Godwin, all of Lake City.
APRIL MARIE McKENZIE -- April Marie McKenzie, 20, died Friday, September 22, 2000, in Clarendon County from injuries received in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held Monday, September 25, 2000, in the Sandy Bay Pentecostal Church. Burial followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Miss McKenzie was born in Sumter County, a daughter of Sara Beth Burgess Godwin and Harvey H. McKenzie. She was valedictorian of the class of 1998 at Living Word Christian School in Kingstree. She received an associate degree from Williamsburg Technical College and was presently attending Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA. She was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors, in addition to her parents of Kingstree, are: her step-father, Dan Godwin of Kingstree; her step-mother, Hope McKenzie of Springfield, SC; one sister, Candace Godwin of Kingstree; one step-sister, Amy Thomas of Orangeburg; grandparents, Jimmy and Laura Burgess and Doris McKenzie, all of Kingstree; and her great-grandmother, Serena Coward of Sumter.
MARION LLOYD COKER -- Marion Lloyd Coker, 57, died Thursday, September 21, 2000, at his residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 23, 2000, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in McClary Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Coker was born in Williamsburg County, a son of Wilbur L. Coker and the late Julia Marion Coker. He was employed by Robbie's Furniture Co. and was a member of Millwood United Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to his father of Kingstree, are: his wife, Doris Jones Coker; three daughters, Mrs. Teresa Hall, Mrs. Melissa Haigler and Tanya Coker, all of Kingstree; three brothers, Larry Coker of Turbeville; Harvey Coker of Conway; and Don Coker of Kingstree; one sister, Liz Jenkins of Georgetown and four grandchildren.
SARAH L. BARR TISDALE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Louise Barr Tisdale were held Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church of Kingstree. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Tisdale, 64, died Wednesday, September 13, 2000, at University Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She was born May 18, 1936, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Calvin Barr and Lessie Richardson Barr. She was a 1953 graduate of Tomlinson High School. She was married to the late John D. Tisdale. She was employed as a nursešs aid at Kings County Hospital and later graduated from McAlister Institute of Mortuary Sciences as a licenced funeral director. She was a member of Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Brooklyn, NY, where she served as a youth leader and she co-founded the Youth Conference and Crusade under the leadership of the late Rev. Leon C. Dicks. Survivors are: three children, Larry of Kingstree; Timothy of Summerville; and Daphne of Brooklyn, NY; three adopted children, Samuel and Oner, both of New York; and Quilla of Georgia; three sisters, Della of PA; Deloris of NC; and Sarah Fennell of NJ; and three brothers, Alex of FL; Robert of SC; and James of NJ.
LYDA CROOKS GLEATON -- Graveside services for Lyda Crooks Gleaton, 81, were held Thursday, October 5, 2000, at Crescrent Hill Memorial Gardens directed by Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. Mrs. Gleaton died Monday, October 2, 2000. Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late John Bernard Crooks, Sr. and Hattie Parnell Crooks. She was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Survivors are: her husband, James Urban Gleaton, Sr.; two sons, Luther Wilton Lyles of Ft. Collins, CO; and James Urban Gleaton, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; one daughter, Elizabeth Gleaton Poole of West Columbia; two brothers, William Troy Crooks of San Antonio, TX; and John Bernard Crooks, Jr. of Kingstree; and two sisters, Gennie Crooks Bryant of Riverside, CA; and Marguerite Crooks Scanlon of Indianapolis, IN.
HERMAN GAMBLE -- Funeral services for Herman Gamble were held Thursday, October 5, 2000, at Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Miller. Burial followed in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Gamble, 76, died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born June 26, 1924, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Robert Gamble and Susanna Gamble. He was a retired meat processor at a packing company. He was a member of Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Louise Gamble of the home; two sons, Johnnie Gamble of Kingstree; and Robert Lee Gamble of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Susie Mae Fullwood of Baltimore, MD; and Anna of Harrisburg, PA; and one brother, Granison Gamble of Philadelphia, PA.
MAYBELL ETTA COURTNEY -- Maybell Etta Courtney, 82, died Sunday, October 8, 2000, in a Kingstree hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, October 10, 2000, in the Cedar Swamp Church Cemetery near Kingstree directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Miss Courtney was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late D. W. and Hanna Tisdale Courtney. She attended Cades Baptist Church.
ELIJAH LEMON -- Funeral services for Elijah Lemon were held Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Midway Freewill Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by Eldress Ella McFadden. Burial followed at Fannie Thomas Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Lemon, 57, died Sat., Oct. 7, at Clarendon County Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 24, 1942, in Hemingway, a son of the late Jeff Lemon and Mella Mae Mack. He was a member of Midway Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors are: two sons, Roy Lee Brockington of Kingstree; and Frank Brockington of New Zion; four daughters, Mrs. Shirley Griffin of Alcolu; Certrisie Lemon of Turbeville; Mrs. Ruth Ann James of New Zion; and Delois Lemon of Gable; five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Tindall of New Zion; Mrs. Martha Mouzon, Mrs. Delores Miller, Mrs. Mary Alice Lemon and Mrs. Queen Esther Lemon, all of Baltimore, MD; and two brothers, Eugene Mack and Jeff Lemon, both of Baltimore, MD.
OVA COOKE DuLOWE -- Ova Cooke DuLowe, 93, widow of Charles Carl DuLowe, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 14, at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Beckley, WV. Mrs. DuLowe was born April 5, 1907, in McAlpin, WV, a daughter of Harry E. Cooke and Ella Mae Blankenship Cooke. She was a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV. She was a retired school teacher with the Boone County School District and Raleigh County School District in WV. She was member of the Eastern Star and Whitesville Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: two daughters, Ella DuLowe Plummer of Andrews; and Jacque Jeanne Johnson of Millsville, NJ.
REMBERT "TEDDY" JOE -- Funeral services for Rembert "Teddy" Joe were held Mon., Oct. 16, 2000, at Long Branch United Methodist Church in Greeleyville, conducted by the Rev. Edward McLeod. Burial followed in Big Spring Cemetery in Greeleyville directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mr. Joe was born in Greeleyville, a son of the late Mack Willis Joe and Asalee Bennett Joe. He was a graduate of Allen University with a degree in physical education. He was formerly employed as a social worker with the New York Department of Social Services. He was a member of Long Branch United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the US Army and fought in the Korean Conflict. Survivors are: one son, Norris Johnson of Arlington, VA; two brothers, Mackie Joe of Greeleyville; and Lincoln Joe of Arlington, VA; and four sisters, Mrs. Ida Matthews of Greeleyville; Mrs. Roberta Robinson of Florence, Reatha Joe and Elreidis Joe, both of Greeleyville.
