Posted By: GenealogyBuff.com SUSANNA WILSON DUKES -- Funeral services for Mrs. Susanna Wilson Dukes were held Sat., Oct. 14, 2000, at Ranzie Grove Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by Dr. Herman Gibson. Burial followed at St. Mary A.M.E. Church Cemetery in Salters directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Dukes, 90, died Sun., Oct. 8, 2000, at Lake Moultrie Nursing Home in St. Stephen. She was born July 3, 1910, in Suttons, a daughter of the late Preston Wilson and Nancy Peguese Dukes. She was a former employee at King Kole Industries in Milford, DE. She was a member of Ranzie Grove Baptist Church. Survivors are: one step-daughter, Onieta Pitts of DE; two step-sons, Willie Dukes, Rozell Dukes and Levi Dukes, all of DE; and two brothers, Levi Wilson of Lane; and James Wilson of NC.
LENA MAE DAVIS EPPS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Mae Davis Epps were held Sat., Oct. 14, 2000, at Wilson Chapel Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Herbert Goodwin. Burial followed at St. Luke United Methodist Church Cemetery in Johnsonville directed by Dimery and Rogers. Mrs. Epps, 54, died Tues., Oct. 10, 2000, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born May 17, 1946, in Johnsonville, a daughter of the late Sylvester Davis, Sr. and Lena D. Davis. She was employed as a private duty nurse. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Johnsonville. She was a member of St. Luke Eastern Star Lodge # 116. Survivors are: her husband, Joseph Epps of Salters; two sons, John T. Allison of Johnsonville; and Derwin Joseph Epps of Ft. Lewis, WA; one daughter, Mrs. Mendell A. McCray of Johnsonville; three step-sons, Oscar Epps of Kingstree; Kerwin Epps of Beaufort, GA; and Patrick Pinckney of Kingstree; and three step-daughters, Josa Epps of Beaufort, GA; Cheryl Epps of Everett, WA; and Ashaunta Epps of Germany; two foster children, Nadine Reed and Tuesdae Chennault of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Thompson and Mrs. Flossie Smalls, both of Bridgeport, CT; Mrs. Essie Graham of Myrtle Beach; and Mrs. Veda Bartelle of Lake City; and three brothers, Jessie J. Davis of Johnsonville; Sylvester Davis, Jr. of Pamplico; and Rudy Blaine of Johnsonville.
EULA C. MARTIN GODWIN -- Mrs. Eula C. Martin Godwin, 79, widow of S.P. Godwin, died Oct. 15, 2000, from injuries she received in an accident. Mrs. Godwin was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Joe H. and Allie Barfield Coker. She was a homemaker and member of Hebron Independent Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the church. She was first married to the late Jack A. Martin. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Marian M. Sullivan of Columbia; four sons, Jack L. Martin of Charleston; Joe A. Martin of Cades; H. Donald Martin of Lake City; and Rae E. Martin of Leesville; one brother, Buck Coker of Coward; five sisters, Naomi Passailaigue of North Charleston; Nancy Threatt of Lancaster; Louetta Strickland of Olanta; Margaret Prosser of Coward; and Oree Lee of Coward; two half-brothers, S. H. "Snooks" Coker of Bennettsville; and Jay Coker of Columbia; and one half-sister, Annie Lou Rodgers of Raleigh, NC.
ROBERT B. BARRINEAU -- Robert Benton Barrineau, 76, died Monday, October 16, 2000, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Oct. 18, 2000, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Williamsburg Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Barrineau was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late J. Duncan Barrineau and Mary Hanna Barrineau. He was a retired farmer and also retired from the Kingstree Western Auto store. He was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and Hickson Branch Hunting Club. Survivors are: one daughter, Roberta B. Suman of Kingstree; two sisters, Joan B. Gasque and Lurena B. Nexsen, both of Kingstree; and one brother, Murray Barrineau of Andrews.
MORRIS H. METTS, SR. -- Morris H. Metts, Sr., 68, died Thursday, October 19, 2000, at MUSC in Charleston. Funeral services were held Sat., Oct. 21, 2000, at the Hebron Independent Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mr. Metts was born in Sanford, FL, a son of the late Virgil and Minnie Metts. He was a retired locomotive engineer for Seaboard Coastline Railroad and was a member of Hebron Independent Church, where he served as vice-president of the Men's Club. He was a mason, Masonic Lodge #52 Sanford, FL, a member of the Sandy Bay Hunting Club and the N.R.A. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors are: his wife, Betty Jean Metts of Sanford, FL; one daughter, Tawana Metts of Sanford, FL; and three sons, Mark Metts of Sanford, FL; and Scott Metts and Todd Metts, both of Osteen, FL.
JUNIOUS MILLER -- Funeral services for Junious Miller were held Thurs., October 19, 2000, at Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Miller. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mr. Miller, 78, died Sat., Oct. 14, 2000, at his residence in Kingstree. He was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Kingstree, a son of the late Tom Miller and Ludella Brown Miller. He was a retired employee of the South Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, where he served as a member of the Finance Committee, the Usher Board and the Methodist Men. Survivors are: seven sons, Ernest Miller of Kingstree; Robert Miller and Tom Miller, both of Stone Mountain, GA; Joseph Miller of the home; Frank Miller of Salters; Johnny Miller of Lane; and Bernett Miller of Georgetown; three daughters, Mrs. Alberta Scott of Georgetown; Mrs. Mary Alice Murray of Myrtle Beach; and Mrs. Elaine Bonds of Georgetown; three step-children, Jessie Myers, Frankie Myers and Christopher Myers, all of Kingstree; four brothers, Sam Miller, Jessie Miller, the Rev. Benjamin Miller and Lorie Miller, all of Kingstree; and one sister, Mrs. Minnie L. Snow of Kingstree.
LELA JONES WILSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lela Elsie Jones Wilson were held Monday, October 23, 2000, at Faith United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Harold Gordon. Burial followed at Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Wilson, 102, died Wednesday, October 18, 2000, at McNair Nursing Facility in Lake City. She was born July 15, 1898, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late George Jones and Mary Cunningham Jones. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Joint Stock Lodge. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Betty Duffy of Lake City; one son, Henry Wilson of Lake City; one granddaughter reared as her own, Mrs. Gloria Thomas of Lake City; and one great-grandson reared as her own, Christopher Duffy of East Orange, NJ.
MOISE "PETE" NESMITH -- Funeral services for Moise "Pete" Nesmith were held Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Nesmith, 39, died Mon., Oct. 16, 2000, at New York City Hospital in New York. He was born Oct. 29, 1959, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Cleveland Nesmith, Sr. and Nealy Mae Dorsey Nesmith. He graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 1978. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Beverly Trottie Nesmith of New York City, NY; one daughter, Ellisha Nesmith of New York City, NY; two sons, Morris David Nesmith of New York City, NY; and Jermaine Cunningham of the US Army; four sisters, Dorothy Mae Glover, Mrs. Lillie Mae Woods and Anna Pearl Miller and Mrs. Brenda Lee Burgess of Hemingway; and four brothers, Cleveland Nesmith, Jr. and Victor Nesmith, both of Kingstree; Anthony Jerome Nesmith and Horace Nesmith, both of Bronx, NY.
SAMUEL HOLLOWAY -- Funeral services for Samuel Fredrick Holloway were held Thurs., Oct. 26, 2000, at Mount Zion United Methodist Baptist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Willie Wilson and the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, Sr. Burial followed at Faith United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Holloway, 53, died Sun., Oct. 22, 2000, at the Ronald E. McNair Memorial Nursing Facility in Lake City. He was born Sept. 11, 1937, in Kingstree, a son of the late George Holloway and Emma Kennedy Holloway Little. He graduated from Hillside High School in Durham, NC in 1956. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Saint Augustine College in Raleigh, NC. In 1969, he received his masters degree from the University of Maryland. His teaching career began at Shallote High School in Shallote, NC, continuing in Whiteville, NC. He was a basketball coach in the Common Wealth of Virginia public school system. He also taught at the Prince Charles County High School in Maryland. He retired after many years of service as a teacher, coach and mentor from Charles Young Elementary School in Washington, DC. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Conner-Holloway of Kingstree; three step-children, Jacqueline Pickett and Camelia R. Conner, both of Kingstree; and Mrs. Rhonda P. Brown of Charlotte, NC; one brother, James Verdell Holloway of Cincinnati, OH; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Rosa N. Conner of Kingstree.
BESSIE STAGGERS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Nelson Staggers were held Oct. 31, 2000, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree, conducted by the Rev. Willie Wilson. Burial followed at Crossroad Cemetery in Salters directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Stagers, 88, died Wed., October 25, 2000, at McNair Nursing Home in Lake City. She was born 1912 in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Wesley Nelson and Emma Shaw Nelson. She was employed by the Jewish Home for the Aged in New Haven, CT. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She was married to the late James "Slim" Staggers. Survivors are: five sons, Willie Staggers, Bennie Louis Staggers, Joseph Staggers, James Staggers, Jr. and Theodus Staggers, all of New Haven, CT; two daughters, Mrs. Emmer Ruth Cox of Salters; and Mrs. Annie Belle McGee of Hamden, CT; and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Boykin of Salters.
