Carolyn Wells

HICKORY GROVE - Mrs. Carolyn Hardin Wells, 72, of 6280 Wylie Ave. died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hickory Grove ARP Church, with the Rev. Kyle Sims officiating and the Rev. Bill Jones assisting. Burial will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Wells was a daughter of the late W.D. Hardin and Edna Ramsey Hardin. She was a homemaker and a member of Hickory Grove ARP Church.

Surviving are her husband, Lloyd Well; her daughter, Vicki Wells Phillips of Gaffney; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home in York.

Memorials may be made to the Hickory Grove Life Saving Squad, 6009 Wylie Ave., Hickory Grove, SC 29717.

Carl Westbury

RIDGEVILLE - Mr. Carl Westbury, 63, of 457 Rice Road died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Summerville Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Walling officiating.

A native of Charleston County, he was a son of the late Charles A. Westbury Sr. and Lillie Bell Beckett Westbury. He was a retired supervisor with General Tire Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union. He was the widow of Mary Dennis Westbury.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond Westbury of Indiana and Randy Westbury of California; his daughter, Ashley Westbury of Ridgeville; his brother, Charles A. Westbury of Ridgeville; three sisters, Sarah W. Lane of Walterboro, Louise Baxley of Boyce, La., and Margaret Fregetto of Destin, Fla.; and four grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.

Robert Byrd

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robert E. Byrd, 61, of 1210 36th St., formerly of York County, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be noon Saturday at Great Joy Baptist Church in McConnells, with the Rev. Walter B. White officiating. Burial will be at Crawford Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Byrd was a member of Great Joy Baptist Church. He was educated in York County public schools and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1960.

Surviving are his daughter, Deborah Byrd Harris of the United States Military; four brothers, Eliza Byrd and David Byrd, both of McConnells, and Roosevelt Byrd and Nathaniel Byrd, both of Charlotte; and six sisters, Leona Burkins, Alytha Byrd and Isabell Byrd, all of McConnells, Lillie Mae Reid of Lowrys, Earlene Mayfield of Rock Hill and Ollie Mae Orear of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Eva Byrd of 11732 Smith Ford Road, Hickory Grove.

Robert Elliott Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Robert B. Elliott Sr., 83, of 1685 Hillcrest Ave. died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Grady Ghent officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Wood and Kate Elliott. He was the former owner of Elliott Shoe Repair. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was an ordained lay minister.

Surviving are his wife, Violet Haithcock Elliott; his son, Robert B. "Bob" Elliott of Tega Cay; three daughters, Peggy Faulkenberry and Libby Williams, both of Lancaster, and Louise Denton of Liberty Hill; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Jesse Gladney Sr.

Jamaica, N.Y. - Mr. Jesse James Gladney Sr., formerly of Chester, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Trump Pavilion in Jamaica, N.Y.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. T. G. Green officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Gladney was the son of the late Richard Gladney and Mattie Jones Gladney.

Surviving are his son, Jesse James Gladney Jr. of Chester; his daughter, Rene? Nicholson of Charlotte; three sisters, Ruby Lee Gladney of Chester, Martha Harrison of Jamaica and Lillie Gladney of Baltimore; three brothers, Willie Gladney, Ernest Gladney and James Clyde Gladney, all of Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The family will receive friends at the home of his son, Jesse Gladney Jr., 862 Elks Road, Chester, and at the home of Ruby Gladney, 201 Brendale Drive.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Katie Hinson

LANCASTER - Mrs. Katie Elizabeth Hinson, 74, of 935 16th St. died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sanford Moree officiating. Burial will be at Union Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Pageland.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late Joe Helms and Cora Edna Eason Helms. She was the widow of Daniel Lewis and Lonnie Arthur Hinson. She was a retired poultry employee.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Dianne Underwood of Lancaster; three sons, Leon Dan Lewis and John L. Lewis, both of Lancaster, and Anthony Nelson Hinson of Florence; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Duie McClain

LANCASTER - Mr. Duie McClain, 58, of 2160 Dover Lane died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at White Plains Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clayton Cordell officiating.

A native of Chesterfield, Mr. McClain was a son of the late Gary McClain and Mary Lucille Hartis McClain. He was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are three sons, Robert McClain, Stanley McClain and Phillip McClain, all of Lancaster; his daughter, Sheila M. Kelly of Monroe, N.C.; his brother, Jim Henry McClain of York; five sisters, Lucy Catoe of Kannapolis, N.C., and Ellen Warren, Patsy Aldridge, Gracie Blanchard and Sylvia Pender, all of Fort Mill; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Building, Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

Elihue Robinson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Elihue Robinson of 338 Arnold St. died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. today at Macon Funeral Home in Rock Hill, with the Rev. W.B. White officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Robinson was a son of the late Arther Robinson and Minnie Phillips Robinson. He attended York County public schools, was a veteran of World War II and was retired from the Ideal Stationery Shop in New York.

Surviving are two sons, James L. Robinson of Rock Hill and Ernest Robinson of New York; two daughters, Ingring Robinson and Ersula Robinson, both of New York; his sister, Macie R. Henderson of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge.
