Sara Plyler

LANCASTER - Mrs. Sara T. Haney Plyler, 82, of 1109 Hawthorne Road died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Shane Patrick and Roy Barnes officiating. Entombment will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Pelzer, she was the widow of Ellis Braxton Haney and Eugene Parks Plyler. She was co-owner of Lancaster Memorial Park and former owner of Sea Spray in North Myrtle Beach. She was a past member of the Evening Garden Club and member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in WMU, Oasis and the Fidelis Bible Class.

Surviving are her sister, Hazel McKee of New Orleans, La.; two stepdaughters, Virginia Riggins of Lancaster and Pat Watts of Murrells Inlet; her stepson, Lowry K. Plyler of Lancaster; seven step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and six step great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, 300 S. Market St., Lancaster, SC 29720 or to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1142, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Hettie Pressley

CHESTER - Mrs. Hettie Mae Brown Pressley, 92, of 2692 Lowrys Highway died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Thompson Jr. and the Rev. Chip Sneed officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Pressley was a daughter of the late Clarence Brown and Alma Grant Brown. She was the widow of James Brenton Pressley Sr. She was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Chester County schools and attended Winthrop College.

Surviving are three sons, James B. "Jim" Pressley Jr., Tom Brown Pressley and John Neely Pressley, all of Chester; her sister, Annie Lou Brown Frazer of Chester; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Zion Presbyterian Church, 2709 Lowrys Highway, Chester, SC 29706.

Marvin Thomas

SHARON - Mr. Marvin "Gismo" Thomas, 69, of 3041 Montview Road died Friday, April 30, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Clover. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Joseph Marion Thomas and Lydia Prince Thomas. He was the widower of Pansy B. Thomas. He was an auto mechanic and n U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two brothers, Anvil M. Thomas of Clover and Bud Thomas of Shelby; and two sisters, Ruth T. Hawkins of Clover and Mary Belle T. Dean of Crestview, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care Unit, VA Hospital, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.

M.F. Blackmon

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. M.F. Blackmon, 72, of 4112 Matanda Lane died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Flint River Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Neal officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Blackmon was a son of the late Clifford Sam Blackmon and Cola Couch Blackmon. He was retired from the packing department of Springs Industries' Grace Bleachery. He was also a farmer and a member of Flint Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Clements Blackmon; three sons, Jimmy Blackmon, Randy Blackmon and Steve Blackmon, all of Heath Springs; three brothers, Ben Blackmon of Lancaster, and Clifford Blackmon and Bobby Bruce Blackmon, both of Heath Springs; his sister, Virda Horton of Kershaw; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Joseph Mattox

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Joseph Zeb Mattox, 73, of Charlotte died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Wesley Care Center.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Mattox was the son of the late Zebulon Mattox and Minnie Medlin Mattox. He was a member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a retired cattle farmer in York County.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Plyler Mattox; two sons, Franklin Zeb Mattox of Hickory Grove and Mark S. Mattox of York; two daughters, Sandra Mattox Talbert of Charlotte and Susan Mattox Little of Harrisburg, N.C.; three brothers, Ormand Mattox, Thomas W. Mattox and John R. Mattox, all of Charlotte; three sisters, Virginia Blackwell of Yanceyville, N.C., and Elizabeth Greene and Sara Allison, both of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the home of his daughter, Sandra M. Talbert, 4225 Black Sycamore Drive in Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 3240 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.

McEwen Funeral Service in Charlotte is in charge.

Wade Mullis

YORK - Mr. Wade Leonard Mullis, 67, of 3055 Mullis Road died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Scherer Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Rick Lindsay officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Mullis was a son of the late Wade Lindsay Mullis and Mary Purser Mullis. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired mechanic for A.G. Boone.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Joann Anderson Mullis; his son, Wade Timothy Mullis of York; two daughters, Renee M. Kimrey of York and Annette M. Taylor of Clover; two brothers, Donald Ray Mullis and Jerry Mullis, both of Charlotte; his sister, Lena Allen of Matthews, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Vena Mae Smith

LANCASTER - Mrs. Vena Mae Bradley Smith, 54, of 1892 Camp Creek Road died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and was the daughter of the late Morris Bradley and Ethel Bradley.

Surviving are her husband, Wayne Smith of Lancaster; two sons, Wayne Knight and Stephen Clyburn, both of Lancaster; four daughters, Sandra Knight, Ren?e Clyburn Amerson, Stephanie Clyburn Faile and Stephanie Clyburn, all of Lancaster; two brothers, Morris Bradley and Joey Bradley, both of Lancaster; three sisters, Miriam Henry, Marlene Bradley Cauthen and Vickey Broward, all of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Marlene Bradley Cauthen, 1079 10th St., Lancaster.

Marion Brakefield

YORK - Mr. Marion William Brakefield, 73, of 1150 Turkey Creek Road died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove Church of God, with the Rev. Roger Nix officiating and the Revs. John P. Smith and Gene Hancock assisting. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Union, Mr. Brakefield was a son of the late Clarence Brakefield and Nora Rochester Brakefield. He was a former owner and operator of restaurants. He was a former member of the York Rescue Squad. He was an active member of the Hickory Grove Church of God and donated more than six gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.

Surviving are his wife, Gracie Sams Brakefield; three sons, Marion Brakefield Jr. of Chesterfield, Jimmy Brakefield of Lexington and Tommy Brakefield of York; four daughters, Mozelle "Mo" Reeves of York, Linda Pullan of Winnsboro, Laura Brazzil of Clover and Delaine Byrum of Hickory Grove; two brothers, Charles Brakefield and Howard Brakefield, both of York; two sisters, Louise B. Teague of York and Shirley B. Childers of Sharon; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home in York.
