Ella Vees

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ella Lobenstein Vees, 94, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Magnolia Manor.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas Lutheran Church at 4013 Shamrock Drive in Charlotte, with the Rev. Edward Crotty officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

A native of Germany, Mrs. Vees was a charter member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church. The widow of Oscar Vees, she came to the United States in 1925 and was active in church, civic and community affairs in New Jersey and Charlotte.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Manfred R. Vees and Dolores G. Vees of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at St. Thomas Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Manfred R. Vees, 1771 Colony Drive, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 4013 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Lovett Williams Jr.

FORT LAWN - Mr. Lovett Clyde "Sonny" Williams Jr., 53, of 5651 Diamond Lane died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Ezell AME Zion Church, with the Rev. William N. Long officiating and the Rev. Cleatus Jones assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Williams was a son of the late Lovett Clyde Williams Sr. and Clara Bell Walker Williams. He was a member of Union Ezell AME Zion Church, where he was a trustee and a member of the men's choir. He attended the public schools of Chester County. He was employed by Morrison Textile in Fort Lawn.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Woodard Williams; four sons, Brinard Williams of Fort Lawn, Steven Williams of Great Falls, Kenta Williams of the home and Jeffrey Cloud of Wingate, N.C.; his daughter, Marquesa Williams of the home; nine brothers, Tommy Lee Williams, Sr., Rudolph Williams, Robert Williams, Russell Williams, George Williams, Keith Williams, Richard Williams and Timmy Williams, all of Fort Lawn, and Donell Williams of Richburg; three sisters, Dorothy Williams, Martha Elder and Linda Dover, all of Fort Lawn; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 tonight at Union Ezell AME Zion Church.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The body may be viewed from noon to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

Winfred Dill

ROCK HILL - Mr. Winfred O'Keith "W.O." Dill, 82, of 3 Church St. died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at the Greene Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Glen Self officiating. Burial will be at the Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Greenville, he was the son of the late Arthur and Annie Fleming Dill. Mr. Dill worked at the Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. for 40 years and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his retirement from the Bleachery, he was the elevator operator for the professional building in downtown Rock Hill. He was the widower of Monnie Lark Dill.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathy Jenkins of Rock Hill; two sisters, Emma Lou Irby of Rock Hill and Irene Loftis of Anderson; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday.

James Evans

BOSTON - Mr. James "J. Lee" Evans, 78, of 1990 Columbus Ave. in Boston died Wednesday, April, 21, 1999, at the Jamaica Plains Veteran's Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Old Wilson Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Robinson officiating and the Revs. Otha L. Smith, George Guy Jr. and Anthony Commodore assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Evans was a World War II veteran. He moved to Boston after the war. Mr. Evans was the widower of Amie Ball Evans.

Surviving are three sons, Richard L. Evans, Sidney D. Evans and Clarence W. Evans, all of Boston; her sister, Mary Guy of Chester; her brother, David Douglas of Washington D.C.; his grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Christopher King's Funeral Home at 703 Old York Road. The body may be viewed at Old Wilson Baptist Church starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Councilman George B. Guy.

Sadie Guinn

EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Sadie Ramsey Guinn, 91, of 2218 Fudge Guinn Road died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lando Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles C. LaFoy and Dr. Richard Harrison officiating. Burial will follow at the Lando Cemetery.

A native of Lando, she was the daughter of the late William Wade and Eller Coker Ramsey. Mrs. Guinn was retired from Manetta Mills in Lando after 40 years of service. She was an active member of the Lando Senior Citizens' Group and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Chester. She was the widow of Samuel B. Guinn.

Surviving are three sons, Phillip Guinn of Rock Hill, Bryan Guinn of Edgemoor and William R. Guinn Sr. of Whitmire; three daughters, Phyllis G. Gee of York, Virginia G. Shoemaker of Charlotte and Geraldine G. Burriss of Edgemoor; two sisters, Frances Thorpe of Edgemoor and Lula Sides of Fort Lawn; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Juanita Matthews

MOUNT PLEASANT - Mrs. Juanita Comer Matthews, 74, formally of 821 McNair Street in Rock Hill, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Pietila officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mrs. Matthews was a daughter of the late Fred and Mattie Ramsey Comer. She was retired from Celanese and was a member of the Woodland United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Matthews was the widow of George O. Matthews.

Surviving are her daughter, Janice C. Williams of Mount Pleasant; two brothers, Hugh Comer of Hickory Grove and Earl "Jack" Comer of Sharon; four sisters, Clara C. Sanders of Chester, Sara Comer Rooks and Martha C. Trent, both of Rock Hill, and Faye C. Russell of Hickory Grove; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home.

Charles Reese III

LANCASTER - Mr. Charles Alexander Reese III, 76, of 609 N. Plantation Road died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill. A memorial service will follow at noon at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, with the Revs. Ernie Thompson and Sam Thomas officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Reese was a son of Charles Alexander Reese Jr. and Frances Hughes Reese. Mr. Reese had been a plant manager of Rock Hill Printing & Finishing and retired as plant manager of Springs Industries Grace Bleachery. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he was a Mason and a member of Rock Hill Masonic Lodge 111.

Surviving are his wife, Billie Bush Reese; his son, John Reese of Lancaster; two daughters, Lillian Suliga of Baltimore and Nancy Reese of Mill Valley, Calif.; his sister, Anne Adams of Fayetteville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at their home at 609 N. Plantation Road, Lancaster.

James Sparks

CHARLOTTE - Mr. James Calvin Sparks, 85, of 3240 Shamrock Drive died Friday April 23, 1999, at the Wesley Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Gastonia, N.C. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Sparks was a son of the late Virginia Sims Sparks and William Franklin Sparks. He was a Rock Hill High School honors graduate, a veteran of the European theater in World War II and a 40-year employee of A&P Food Stores in Gastonia. Mr. Sparks went on to be a real estate broker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gastonia.

Surviving are his wife, Adelle Sparks; his son, James Donald Sparks of Raleigh, N.C.; his sister, Mrs. Richard Turney of Rock Hill; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McLean & Sons Funeral Home in Gastonia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, P.O. Box 218, Gastonia, NC 28053-0218.
