John McAteer

LANCASTER - Mr. John Barton McAteer, 88, of 1347 Lymon Reece Road died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Frans Residential Care.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh ARP Church cemetery, with the Rev. Cecil N. Johnson officiating.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. McAteer was the son of the late Robert W. Barton and Lillie Plyer McAteer. He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Robert Mitchell

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robert Cavin Mitchell, 54, of 2705 Remington St., formerly of Rock Hill, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pineville AME Zion Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Eugene Goodwin officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Mitchell was the son of the late Robert Mitchell and Henrietta Page Mitchell. He was a member of Pineville AME Zion Church, attended York County public schools and was a former employee of the city of Charlotte parks and recreation department.

Surviving are his wife, Ola Mae Mitchell; two sons, Calvin F. Mitchell of San Bernardino, Calif., and Robert C. Mitchell of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Niki Mitchell and Denise Mitchell, both of Long Beach; four brothers, Albert Mitchell and Glenn Mitchell, both of Rock Hill, Harris Mitchell of Gastonia, N.C., and James Mitchell of York; two sisters, Annie Perry and Carolyn Matthews, both of York; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at King Funeral Home, 4000 Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte.

King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester is in charge of local announcements.

Allen Schaefer

FORT MILL - Mr. Allen Louis Schaefer, 56, died Friday, April 16, 1999, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

The funeral will be 7 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Roseville, Calif. A later service will be in Charlotte in May.

Mr. Schaefer was a native of Ontario, Ore., and was the son of Louis Schaefer and Mildred Schaefer. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1960 and obtained a business degree from Washington State University in 1967. He was employed by Hyster Co. for 25 years. In 1992, he joined Wrenn-Brungart in Charlotte, where he was the vice president and division general manager.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Schaefer; two daughters, Ann Marie Estacio of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Kristina Hengst of Auburn, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Church building fund, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or the Diabetes Association.

Vernon Weaver

FORT MILL - Mr. Vernon B. Weaver, 83, of 1036 Maxwell Mill Road died Monday, April 19, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Colony House, 1036 Maxwell Mill Road, with the Rev. Paul Harmon officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church.

Mr. Weaver was a native of Orange County, N.C. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy SeaBees. Formerly of Durham, N.C., he retired from Long Meadow Farms, where he was the plant supervisor for many years. He was a member of the Elks Club of Durham, the VFW and Lakewood Baptist Church.

Mr. Weaver was the son of the late C.H. "Doc" Weaver and Hattie Sparrow Weaver. He was the widower of Rebecca Allen Weaver.

Surviving are his son, Bill Weaver of Tega Cay; his brother, Paul Weaver of Durham; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Philadelphia United Methodist Church after the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

William Davis Sr.

VALDESE, N.C. - Mr. William Earl Davis Sr., 81, 308 N. Rodoret St., died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Grace Hospital.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, N.C., with the Rev. Jeff Johnsen officiating.

A native of Catawba County, N.C., he was a son of the late William Earl Davis and Flossie Witherspoon Davis. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Lovelady Masonic Lodge No. 670, Hickory York Rite Bodies and Oasis Temple in Charlotte. He was the owner of Davis Electric Co.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Abernethy Davis; two sons, William Davis III of Hickory and Richard E. Davis of Connelly Springs, N.C.; two daughters, Virginia D. Rector of Drexel, N.C., and Martha Davis of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Davis Bernard of Connelly Springs, N.C., and Frances Davis Ellison of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends today at home.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Germain Ave. SE, Valdese, NC 28690.

Joe Dawkins

RICHBURG - Mr. Joe Gaston Dawkins, 67, of 3303 Edgeland Road died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The graveside funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lando Cemetery with the Revs. Lafon Hardy and Richard Harrison officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Dawkins attended the schools of Chester County and was retired from Monetta Mill at Lando. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was the son of the late Edward Brice Dawkins Sr. and Sadie Allen Dawkins.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Thomas Dawkins; his son, Joseph "Joey" Dawkins of Edgemoor; his daughter, Cheryl Blackwell of Richburg; his brother, Edward B. Dawkins Jr. of Cayce; three sisters, Polly Culp of Chester, Dorothy Mobley of Chester and Willette Ernandez of Richburg; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

James Evans

BOSTON - Mr. James Evans, formerly of Chester, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital.

The family will receive friends at the home of Councilman George Guy, 118 Cushman Drive.

Arrangements, which are incomplete, will be announced by Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road.

Joanna Good

CLOVER - Mrs. Joanna Jones Good, 64, of 415 Cedar Grove Road died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Bratton Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. Robert Sprinkle officiating and the Revs. Samuel B. Hoyt and Wallace Tinsley assisting. Burial will be at Beersheba Presbyterian Church cemetery in York.

A native of York County, Mrs. Good was a daughter of the late Robert E. Jones and Bertha Callahan Jones. She was a secretary with the Department of Social Services. She was a member of Temple Presbyterian Church in America.

Surviving are her husband, J. Henry Good; three sons, Robert Good, Gary Good, and Keith Good, all of York; her daughter, Genevieve Good English of York; her sister, Rebecca Jones Taylor of York; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Temple Presbyterian Church in America, P.O. Box 733, York, SC 29745.
