Howard Upchurch

ROCK HILL - Mr. Howard Dean Upchurch, 70, of 869 Susan Circle died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rick Sturgis officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Gaffney, Mr. Upchurch was the son of the late John Calvin Upchurch and Virgie Dean Upchurch. He was an Army veteran of Korea. He was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. with 39 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2889 and the American Legion Post No. 34. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Marian G. "Katie" Upchurch; his daughter, Doris Upchurch Cullen of Rock Hill; his half brother, Billy Upchurch of Gaffney; two half sisters, Margie Bostic of Columbia and Judy Lester of Gaffney; two grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Andy Woodard Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. Andy Woodard Jr., 83, of Beverly Health Care in Rock Hill, formerly of 552 Vance Drive, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.E. Page officiating. The Rev. L.L. Robertson will give the eulogy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A Fairfield County native, Mr. Woodard was retired from Springs Industries. He was a member and trustee of Friendship Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his brother, Joseph Woodard of Chester; his sister, Hattie Woodard of Baltimore; and his niece, Earleen Gray of the home.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Denton Funeral Home is in charge.

James Cherry Sr.

YORK - Mr. James "Jimmy" C. Cherry Sr., 62, of 303 N. Shiloh Road died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Revs. Rick Sturgis and Marion Pressley officiating. Burial will be at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Cemetery, Catawba Ward.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Cherry was a retired automobile mechanic and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Canty Cherry; four sons, Jimmy Dean Cherry of the home, and Ronald A. Cherry, Don Cherry and J.C. Cherry Jr., all of Rock Hill; his sister, Jewel McDaniel of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his sister, Jewell C. McDaniel, 1957 Holland Road, Rock Hill.

Esmal Combs

CHESTER - Mrs. Esmal "Essie" Roberts Combs, 86, of 609 McDowell Drive died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Chip Sneed and Sam Hoyte officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

Born in Burnwell, Ky., Mrs. Combs was a retired nurse who completed her nurse training at Williamson Hospital in Williamson, W.Va. She was a graduate of Pikeville High School in Pikeville, Ky., and a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Combs; her daughter, Linda Barrett of Chester; three sisters, Audrey Lewis of Port Orange, Fla., Lucille Cutrone of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Rosemary Ray of Tampa, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Jenny Davis

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Jenny Blanche Prater Davis, 85, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Meadow Haven Rehabilitation and Specialty Care Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn West Cemetery on Freedom Road in Charlotte, with Dr. Dixon Free officiating.

Born in Oconee County, Mrs. Davis was a retired registered nurse who worked as a private day nurse for most of her life. She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School and was a member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. She was the widow of Walter Clinton Davis.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends after the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to the National Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, IL 60611-1676.

Ann Giles

GREENVILLE - Mrs. Ann Lindfors Giles, 72, of 15 N. Brookwood Drive died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, with the Revs. Rod Clay and Robert Spears officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Monday at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia.

Born in Columbia, Mrs. Giles attended Winthrop College and the University of South Carolina, where she graduated as a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was secretary to the dean of the school of business administration at the University of South Carolina before her marriage. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Women in the Church. She also belonged to the Carolinian Debutante Club and Wildwood Garden Club.

Surviving are her husband, George Wesley Giles; two daughters, Dale Giles Earhardt of Columbia and Lynn Giles Young of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville.

William Harper

TIRZAH - Mr. William "Bill" Reid Harper, 73, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Ebenezer Nursing Home in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tirzah Presbyterian Church near York, with the Rev. James Gable officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery in Clover.

Born in York, Mr. Harper was a retired farmer. He belonged to the Cattlemans Association and the Young Farmers Association. Mr. Harper had perfect attendance at Sunday school at Tirzah Presbyterian Church for 55 years.

Surviving are four brothers, Richard Harper of Tirzah, Isaac Harper and James Harper, both of Rock Hill, and Jack Harper of Charlotte; and three sisters, Martha McNeely of Banner Elk, N.C., Marion Youngblood of Tirzah and Jean Harrill of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home in York.

Memorials may be sent to Tirzah Presbyterian Church building fund, 181 Tirzah Road, York, SC 29745.

Isaiah LeMon

ROCK HILL - A graveside service for Isaiah LeMon of 484 Castlewood Circle, who died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, will be 2:30 p.m. today at Mount Zion AME Zion Church in Landsford, with the Rev. Alan Stewart officiating.

Isaiah was the infant son of Kamilah Neely and Mario Belton.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandmother, Patricia Neely of Rock Hill; his maternal great-grandmother, Sarah Hampton of Bronx, N.Y.; and his great-great-grandmother, Isabell Neely of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home.
