Patricia Wilkes

CHESTER - Mrs. Patricia Poteat Wilkes, 74, of 116 Crestwood Circle died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, with Dr. Dwight Pearson officiating.

Mrs. Wilkes was a native of Chester. She was a member of Purity Presbyterian Church, where she taught children's Sunday school. She was a former member of the Pilot Club. She was a retired sales clerk with Belk-Hudson department stores. She was a graduate of Chester High School and attended Winthrop College.

Mrs. Wilkes was the daughter of the late Joseph Poteat and Hulda McLarnon Poteat. She was the widow of Paul Hayne Wilkes Jr.

Surviving are his daughter Susan Kelsey of Chester; his son Paul Wilkes III of Union; five grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Purity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 278, Chester, SC 29706.

Barron Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Andy Woodard Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. Andy Woodard Jr., 83, of Beverly Health Care in Rock Hill died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Before entering Beverly, Mr. Woodard lived at 552 Vance Drive, Chester.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Denton Funeral Home in Chester.

Helen Alves

CHESTER - Mrs. Helen V.W. Switzer Alves, 76, of 117 Pinckney St. died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Barron Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Dwight Pearson officiating.

A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Mrs. Alves was a daughter of the late Fred George Switzer and Helen Van Winkle Switzer. She was a graduate of Ithaca High School and attended Cornell University. She was an occupational therapist and a member of the Chester Quilters Club.

Surviving are her son, Ron Alves of Chester; two daughters, Suanne Sgaggero of Frostburg, Md., and Cynthia Alves of London; her brother, Fred Switzer of Fort Mill; her sister, Grace Hall of Rock Hill; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Ambrose Brooks Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. Ambrose Wallace "P.Y." Brooks Jr. of 524 Center Road died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. James T. Holcombe officiating.

A native of Chester, Mr. Brooks was a son of the late Ambrose W. Brooks Sr. and Rebecca Yongue Brooks. He was an employee of Essex Corp. and attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are two sisters, Amelia Brooks and Rebecca Brooks, both of Chester.

The family will receive friends at home.

Ruby Carnes

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruby Brewton Carnes, 80, formerly of Fort Mill, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sisk Memorial Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roland Dry and Mike Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

Mrs. Carnes and her late husband, Edward Wesley Carnes Sr., were the former owners of the Palmetto Grocery and the Fort Mill Soda Shop, located at 401 N. White St. in Fort Mill. She was a member of Sisk Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Edward "Sonny" Wesley Carnes Jr. of Chester; her daughter, Janice C. Swanger of Fort Mill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home.

Mabel Cowans

BALTIMORE - Mrs. Mabel Gertrude Paul Cowans, formerly of Chester, died Thursday, March 25, 1999.

Burial was at Loudon Park Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Cowans was a daughter of the late Moses Paul and Bessie Paul. She was Finley High School valedictorian and was retired from General Electric as assistant financial secretary. She was employed there for 20 years. Mrs. Cowans also was vice president of the Pastor's Guild.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester, was in charge of local arrangements.

Frank Elliott Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Frank Elliott Jr., 84, of 775 Bridgewood Drive died Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at Piedmont Medical Center.

Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church cemetery. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. R. Boyce Wilson, John A. "Jack" Basie and Harold "Bo" Coleman officiating.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Elliott was a son of the late Jasper Franklin Elliott Sr. and Lottie Moon Wall Elliott. He was a retired sales representative with Southeastern Paper Co. in Spartanburg. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Winthrop Training School and was a member of the Rock Hill Elks Club, where he held many offices.

Surviving is his wife, Martha Howe Elliott.

The family will receive friends after the service at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Memorial Association, 775 Bridgewood Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Viola Gardner

LANCASTER - Mrs. Viola Johnson Gardner, 89, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael D. Faulkner officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late William Gardner and Hattie Usher Gardner and was the widow of Bennie W. Gardner Sr. A homemaker, she was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her son, Bennie W. Gardner Jr. of Lancaster; her daughter, Betty Faulkner of Clover; two sisters, Azilee Steele and Eleanor Beach, both of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1302, Lancaster, SC 29721.
