Helen Alves

CHESTER - Mrs. Helen V.W. Switzer Alves, 76, of 117 Pinckney St. died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. April 8 at Barron Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Dwight Pearson officiating.

A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Mrs. Alves was the daughter of the late Fred George Switzer and Helen Van Winkle Switzer. She was a graduate of Ithaca High School and attended Cornell University. She was an occupational therapist and a member of the Chester Quilters Club.

Surviving are her son, Ron Alves of Chester; two daughters, Suanne Sgaggero of Frostburg, Md. and Cynthia Alves of London; her brother, Fred Switzer of Fort Mill; her sister, Grace Hall of Rock Hill; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Edward Usher

LANCASTER - Mr. Bunyan Edward Usher Jr. 70, of 406 Providence Road died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at St. Luke United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carlos Gardner officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Usher was born in Lancaster County and was the son of Bunyan Edward Usher Sr. and Ellen Harper Usher Caskey. He was a retired electrician for Springs Industries, and a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and Barron Masonic Lodge No. 261, Eastern Star No. 259 and Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Hallman Usher; five sons, the Rev. G. Eddie Usher of Eastover and Randy Usher, Johnny Usher, Terry Usher and Darryl Usher, all of Lancaster; his brother, Robert Biggert Usher of Aiken; two sisters, Betty Bragdon and Mary Nancy Hagins, both of Lancaster; his stepbrother, Jessie J. Caskey Jr. of Gallenton, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church building fund, 128 Providence Road, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to HomeCare Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Annie Caskey

LANCASTER - Mrs. Annie Thomas Caskey, 78, of 1760 Richmond Blvd. died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Clyde Earles and Link Earles officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Caskey was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Sulie Moore Thomas. She was the widow of John L. Caskey. She was retired from Dan River Inc. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Mildred Foster of Florida; her brother, Dan Thomas of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. today at the graveside.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret Gatson

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Margaret Minton Gatson of 2216 Sanders Ave. died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Huntersville, N.C. Burial will be at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Gatson was the daughter of the late Thomas Minton and Mattie Minton. She was educated at Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, joined Cross Road Baptist Church in Rock Hill at an early age and later joined Mount Olive Baptist Church in Huntersville. She was the widow of Harold Gatson.

Surviving are two sons, Harold Gatson Jr. of Queens, N.Y., and Larry Gatson of Charlotte; her daughter, Deborah B. Robinson of Charlotte; three brothers, Johnny Minton, Willie Minton and Thomas Minton Jr., all of Rock Hill; seven sisters, Maggie Dye of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Alise Mobley, Elizabeth King, Fannie Hinton, Alice Miller, Willie Mae Kennedy and Catherine Kennedy, all of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon to 12:55 p.m. Friday at the church.

Hugh Graves

CLOVER - Mr. Hugh John Graves, 45, of 6670 Highway 557 died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Lake Wylie Christian Assembly, with the Revs. Lewis Gunn and Paul Jenkins officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Graves family cemetery in Pageland.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mr. Graves was the son of the late Max Herschel Graves and Frances Martin Graves. He was a retired lieutenant from the S.C. Highway Patrol and was a member of Lake Wylie Christian Assembly.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Kirkley Graves; his son, John Drew Graves of the home; his daughter, Amy Frances Graves of the home; two brothers, Tom Graves of Central and Martin Graves of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two sisters, Annette Moser of Monroe, N.C., and Ellen Johnson of Gaffney; and his stepsister, Cindy Kirkley of Pageland.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Lake Wylie Christian Assembly.

Deborah Laws

FORT LAWN - Mrs. Deborah Martin Ellis Laws, 42, of 714 Western Acres Road died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lando Church of God, with the Rev. Charles LaFoy officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Laws was a former employee of Springs Industries and Duracell. She was a graduate of Lewisville High School.

Surviving are two sons, John Dale Ellis of Fort Lawn and Ralph Daniel Ellis Jr. of Fayette County, Ga.; her parents, John and Elizabeth Martin of Fort Lawn; her brother, Marion Martin of Edgemoor; and her sister, Beverly Knight of Fort Lawn.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Leila Moore

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Mrs. Leila Mae Moore, 83, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Norwich Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Stokes officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Moore was a retired seamstress with Brunswick Manufacturing Co. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, Norwich Baptist Church and the T.E.L. Sunday school class.

Surviving are two sons, John Randolph Tucker of York and George D. Tucker of Brunswick; her daughter, Barbara Moody of Brunswick; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home.

Crawford Reynolds

LANCASTER - Mr. Crawford Bruce Reynolds, 46, of 3468 Thompson Road died Tuesday, March 30, 1999.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Revs. Kenny Coker and James Helms officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Reynolds was employed as an auto mechanic for Reynolds Garage and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Bridgette Fondren Reynolds; his son, Jeremy Bruce Morris of Lancaster; his daughter, Rachel Dawn Morris; his parents, Ollie and Alice Deason Reynolds of Lancaster; and his sister, Cynthia "Cindy" Melton of Monroe, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ollie and Alice Reynolds, 3484 Thompson Road, Lancaster.
