Emma Simpson

LIBERTY HILL - Mrs. Emma Lewis Simpson, 75, of 2448 McWhirter Lane died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Union Cemetery in Richburg, with the Rev. Clay Waldrip and the Rev. Dr. Eugene Rollins officiating.

A native of Fairfield County, Mrs. Simpson was the daughter of the late James Carroll Lewis and Nettie McKeown Lewis. She was the widow of Ernest C. "Snooky" Simpson. She was formerly employed with Springs Industries as a sewing machine operator. She was a member of Chester First Baptist Church and attended Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Blackstock High School.

Surviving are her son, Jerry Simpson of Camden; two brothers, Leslie Lewis of Mayfield, Ky., and Sherod Lewis of Rock Hill; her sister, Floride Boulware of Chester; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. today at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church and from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home, Chester.

Evelyn Wells

YORK - Mrs. Evelyn Lee Whitener Wells, 59, of 3 Smith St. died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany ARP Church, with the Rev. Alan Morrow officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Wells was the daughter of Forrest B. Whitener, formerly of Clover, and the late Garfield Whitener. She was a member of Bethany ARP Church and was employed with Frank's Jewelry in Clover. She had previously worked with Belk for 22 years.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, E. Newton Wells; three sisters, Kathy Loudermilk of Clover, Faye Rumfelt of Greenville and LaVinia Bolin of Smyrna.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Herbert Dean

ROCK HILL - Mr. Herbert Leland Dean died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at The Oratory.

A native of Tupper Lake, N.Y., he was the son of the late Herbert S. Dean and Gladys Shaughnessy Dean. He attended Norwich University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He joined the Army Reserve and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and in Germany during the Korean conflict.

His 34 years of government service began as a central office construction representative at the Sunmount Veterans Administration Hospital in Tupper Lake, N.Y. His later assignments included stints as resident engineer at hospitals in Buffalo, N.Y., White River Junction, Vt., and Rutland Heights, Mass.

Mr. Dean transferred to Washington, D.C., as a contracting officer and was in charge of all Veterans Administration hospital construction west of the Mississippi. In 1978, he received a distinguished career award from the Veterans Administration. He later worked for World Bank as procurement engineer, traveling to Germany, Turkey, India, Romania and Greece.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa Charland Dean; his daughter, Mary Beth Thompson Duke; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Ronald Fletcher

KERSHAW - Mr. Ronald Hugh Fletcher, 61, of 625 Clearwater Lake Road died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Morris and Charles H. Rabon officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Gaffney, Mr. Fletcher was a son of O.E. Coyle Fletcher of Little Mountain and the late Rev. Grady Andrew Fletcher. He retired as a power operator for DuPont after 26 years. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. He was a member of the Army National Guard for 12 years and was a private pilot.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Yvonne Branham Fletcher; his son, Roy Douglas Fletcher of Kershaw; two daughters, Rhonda Lynn Fletcher of Kershaw and Pamela Ann Fletcher of West Columbia; and his sister, Patricia Johnson of Little Mountain.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Mary Foster

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Mary Williams Foster of 530 East Blvd. in Chesterfield died Monday, March 22, 1999.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Presbyterian Church.

A teacher, Mrs. Foster began her career at a business school in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was employed by the Coulter Memorial Academy. She received a bachelor's degree in business education from North Carolina A &T University in Greensboro and completed additional studies at Winthrop University, Virginia State University and North Carolina Central in Durham.

Mrs. Foster was a member of Grandview Presbyterian Church, where she was elected and ordained as a deacon, was chairman of the greeter's group and secretary of the United Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Legion Auxiliary and Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She was a member of the Retired South Carolina Education Association.

Surviving are her husband, Larrie Foster; her son, Lamar Foster of Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers, Robert Williams and Leroy Williams, both of Jamaica, N.Y.; two sisters, Cressie Williams Lenon of Jamaica, N.Y., and Juanita Williams Toatley of Rock Hill.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 tonight at Flemming's Funeral Home in Chesterfield.

Memorials may be made to Grandview Presbyterian Church building fund, P.O. Box 246, Chesterfield SC 29709.

Flemming Funeral Home of Chesterfield is in charge.

Karl Herlinger Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Karl Herlinger Jr. died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Eden Gardens.

A native and lifelong resident of Los Angeles, Mr. Herlinger was a retired make-up artist and member of the Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Local 706 since 1937. He was a veteran of World War II. He attended UCLA and was a member of Delta Chi fraternity. He was past master counselor of the Hollywood Chapter Order of DeMolay, a member of Hollywood Masonic Lodge No. 355, Los Angeles Scottish Rite, American Legion and the U.S. Power Squadron.

Surviving are his daughter, Christine H. Rudd of Fort Mill; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pride Hunt

ROCK HILL - Mr. Pride Hunt, 71, of 942 Spring St. died Saturday, March 20, 1999.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating and the Revs. Ellen Fewell and James Barber assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Hunt was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church. He was a retired custodian and attended York County public schools.

Surviving are his wife, Fannie E. Hunt of Charlotte; two sons, Pride Hunt Jr. and Bobby J. Hunt, both of Rock Hill; five daughters, Brenda E. Caldwell, Cynthia H. White and Cheryl A. Hunt, all of Rock Hill, Carolyn Able of Columbia, and Ren?e Thompson of Charlotte; five brothers, James Hunt, Lewis Hunt Jr., Robert L. Hunt and Franklin Hunt, all of Rock Hill, and Joe L. Hunt of Asbury Park, N.J.; three sisters, Bertha Hunt and Joan Lowery, both of Rock Hill, and Vinnie Brice of Morristown, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Cheryl Hunt, 978 Southland Drive, Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Thursday.
