Sarah Young

SUMTER - Mrs. Sarah F. Young, 62, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday in Green Acres Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Young was a retired seamstress from Pioneer Dress Manufacturing and a member of the Green Acres Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are her husband, Bishop Young; her son, Dean Honeycutt of Richburg; her daughter, Harriett Wilson of Edgemoor; three brothers, the Rev. W.L. Faile Jr. of Chester, Roland Faile of Rock Hill and William Faile of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Sybil Melton and Laura Cain, both of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home at 221 Broad St. in Sumter and at other times at the home at 422 Dogwood Drive in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Green Acres Assembly of God Church.

H. Lewis Allen

ROCK HILL - Mr. H. Lewis Allen, 65, of 2207 Canberra Drive died Monday, March, 8, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles von Rosenberg officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

A native of Paris, Tenn., Mr. Allen was the son of the late Francis Marion and Marian Brough Lewis Allen. He was a sales representative for Industrial Corrugated Packaging. He retired from Owens-Illinois after 22 years and also worked in sales at Inland Container. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and an Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Blesi Allen; two sons, Henry Lewis Allen Jr. of Anniston, Ala., and Charles Widenhouse Allen of Birmingham, Ala.; his daughter, Martha Whitney Allen of Fairhope, Ala.; his stepson, Robert Charles Hanna of Rock Hill; his stepdaughter, Kristine Nicole George of Birmingham; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends at home after the memorial service until 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of York County, 339 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260 or to the charity of one's choice.

Joyce Davis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Joyce Anne Gudgel Davis, 68, of 725 Knollwood Court died Saturday, March 6, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cauthen Funeral Home Rock Hill Chapel, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker, a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and a member of the Rock Hill Country Club.

Surviving are her husband, James M. Davis; her son, James R. Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Kristal A. Davis of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

A vigil service open to everyone will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m.

Sara Ellis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Barnette Ellis, 88, of 1844 Matthews Drive died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Westminster Health Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Chris Ehlers officiating.

Born July 12, 1910, in Tirzah, Mrs. Ellis was the daughter of the late Robert Craig and Nettie Lenoras Cook Barnette. Mrs. Ellis was a homemaker, a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a member of the Rock Hill Senior Citizens. She was the widow of Carl Ellis Sr.

Surviving are her stepson, Mickey Ellis Jr. of Sevierville, Tenn.; her stepdaughter, Wanda Davis of Woodstock, Ga.; and her brother, Harry S. Barnette of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home of Harry and Billie Barnette, 213 Pointe Circle, Rock Hill.

Memorials my be made to Westminster Presbyterian building fund, 1300 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Addie Mayfield

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Addie Stokes Mayfield, 83, of 353 Oakland Ave. died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with Dr. William Pender officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Born in Rock Hill, Mrs. Mayfield was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. James Richmond Stokes. Dr. Stokes was one of Rock Hill's first dentists; a detailed account of his practice is included in the book "A History of Dentistry in Rock Hill, South Carolina, " which Mrs. Mayfield wrote in 1995.

She attended Winthrop Training School, graduating from the 11th grade in 1933. She graduated cum laude from Winthrop College in 1937. At Winthrop, Mrs. Mayfield was a member of Upsilon Tau Epsilon, the International Relations Club, the national educational fraternity Delta Delta chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the Curry Literary Society, The Book and Key, an honorary scholastic and fraternity organization, and The Debating League.

She began her history-teaching career in Walterboro and later taught in Aiken, Chester and at Rock Hill High School. She retired in 1979.

After retirement, she researched her family tree. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists, The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, The National Society Magna Charta Dames and the York County Genealogical and Historical Society.

Mrs. Mayfield also was an active member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where her parents were charter members. She taught the Bible lessons for many years for the Presbyterian Women's Circles and received the "Lifetime Membership" Award of Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the Julian Lake Bible Class. As an elder, she served on the session for several terms and chaired the Worship Committee and the Evangelism Committee. She co-authored "The First Seventy-Five Years: A History of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill, South Carolina." She was one of two women who reorganized and took care of the church's archives.

She was the widow of Huron Learue Mayfield.

Surviving are her son, James Stokes Mayfield of Rock Hill; her daughter, Addie Mayfield Rutledge of Concord, N.C.; her sister, Harriet Stokes Cahill of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 tonight at the home.

Memorials may be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to the Humane Society of York County.

John Sipe

CATAWBA - Maj. John Sipe, 84, of 2077 Greystone Circle died Sunday, March 7, 1999.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery in Clover.

A native of Clover, Maj. Sipe was the son of the late John Henry and Eleanor Whitener Sipe. He completed the Salvation Army Bible College in 1941 and resigned as minister to serve in the military police in the Army during World War II. He resumed his ministry when he returned from overseas.

He was appointed to the International Training College for the Salvation Army in 1966. He served as a Salvation Army pastor for 58 years in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North and South Carolina. He was active in the Lancaster and Rock Hill Salvation Armies. He was the widower of Genelle Jackson Sipe.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy A. Sipe of Atlanta and Sandy Sipe of Charlotte; two sisters, Maj. Madeline Kinlaw and Evelyn Patterson, both of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army Shelter Fund, P.O. Box 11585, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

James Andrew "Boot" Smith Jr.

Mr. James Andrew "Boot" Smith Jr., 42, of 7 Moore St. died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Langrum Branch Baptist Church in York, with Dr. Osbey Roddey officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a York native. He joined Langrum Branch Baptist Church at an early age, served on the trustee board and the brotherhood and assisted with the food service committee and the youth department.

He was on several committees for York public schools. He was a mentor and worked with many civic organizations, including the NAACP, Optimist Club, Habitat for Humanity and youth baseball and basketball teams. He was politically inclined.

He graduated from York High School in 1974 and the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy in 1980. After serving in the U.S. Army, Smith joined the York Police Department, where he worked for 19 years, rising to the rank of detective sergeant.

Surviving are his two daughters, Jamelia Hope Smith and Kelly Andreanna Smith, both of Sharon; his former wife, Patricia J. Smith of Sharon; four brothers, John M. Smith of Sharon, Melvin E. Smith and Darron L. Smith, both of York, and Johnny E. Smith of Kershaw; and two sisters, Martha E. Smith and Catherine L. Smith, both of York.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Langrum Branch Baptist Church and at other times at the home of his sister, Catherine Smith, 20 Northbrook Drive in York.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of York County, 201 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to the Langrum Branch Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 101, York, SC 29745.
