Virgie Brown

MARIETTA, Ga. - Mrs. Virgie Poag Brown, 84, of Marietta, formerly of York, died Tuesday, March, 2, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Winkenhofer Funeral Home in Smyrna, Ga. Burial will be at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta.

A native of York, Mrs. Brown worked as an occupational instructor at the Youth Development Center for the state of Georgia until she retired in 1979. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Surviving are her son, George R. Brown of Charlotte; two daughters, Joan Hancock of Marietta and Evelyn Brown of Alpharetta, Ga.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 9 tonight at Winkenhofer Funeral Home.

Elnora Hardin (1 of 2)

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elnora Hardin of 308 Pursley St. died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ronal King officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Hardin was a native of Chester County. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her son, Joseph Lee Mitchell of Rock Hill; her stepson, Tom Mitchell of Charlotte; two brothers, Fletcher Jackson of Pasadena, Calif., and Phillip Jackson; two sisters, Nancy Hardin of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Leona J. Miller of Charlotte; and two half-sisters, Annie Mae McCoy and Virgie Roseboro, both of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home.

Elnora Hardin (2 of 2)

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elnora Hardin of 308 Pursley St. died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Roberta Hill

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Roberta Hill of 614 Clarinda St. died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home.

Roberta Hill

Longtime educator and human rights advocate Roberta Hall Hill died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. She was 83.

Hill began her 44-year teaching career in Lancaster and later moved to Rock Hill. During those years, she taught at Fairfield Elementary, Sunset Park Elementary and retired from Richmond Drive Elementary. She was principal of Crawford Elementary School and was involved with several civic organizations.

In the early 1990s, Hall served with Brother Eugene Patenaude as co-president of the Rock Hill Human Rights Council. "She was an outstanding woman in the community, " he said. "She was a fine helper."

Hill also worked with the March of Dimes, American Heart Society, American Cancer Society and local voter registration.

"She was very concerned with helping other people, " Patenaude said.

Mrs. Hill was a native of Richburg and a daughter of the late Alice Hall Boular. A graduate of Friendship College, she attended Rock Hill public schools, Johnson C. Smith University and Benedict College.

Hill was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Neighborhood Block Club, and the Emmett Scott Alumni, as well as Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she was adult Sunday school teacher, chaired the Woman's Day Committee and was a member of the Harvest Rally Committee. The widow of Lavie Hill, she was named Woman of the Year at the church.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home and afterward at the home, 615 Clarinda St.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Flint Hill Baptist Church chime fund, 269 Flint Hill Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Ovie Jenkins

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Mrs. Ovie F. Jenkins, 85, of Charlotte died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Beverly Health Care Renaissance.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sutton Funeral Home in Pageland. S.C. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Pageland.

A native of Chesterfield, S.C., Mrs. Jenkins was the daughter of the late Osmond and Ethel Funderburk. She was the widow of Lloyd Q. Jenkins and was retired from Kenneth Home Fashions.

Surviving are three sons, Richard Jenkins of Rock Hill, Travis Jenkins of Pineville, N.C., and Larry Jenkins of Charlotte; her daughter, Patricia Hatley of Indian Trail, N.C.; her brother, James Everette Funderburk of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia Kurtz

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Mrs. Sylvia F. Kurtz, 86, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Hebrew Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rabbi Murray Erzing officiating.

A native of New York City, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha Seidel Frankel. She was the widow of Albert L. Kurtz. She and her husband owned and operated Kings for Men Clothing store in Rock Hill. She was a member of Temple Israel in Charlotte and a member of the Hadassah, in which she held many offices.

Surviving are two sons, Richard O. Kurtz of Hagerstown and John C. Kurtz of Lancaster; her sister, Jennette Leshner of West Hartford, Conn.; and her grandchild.

Harry & Bryant Co. in Charlotte is in charge.

Dorothy Moore

WASHINGTON - Ms. Dorothy Walton Moore, 68, of 1509 Fort Davis St. S.E. died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Greater Southeast Hospital.

The funeral will be noon Friday at New Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rudolph White officiating. Burial will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Blancsburg, Md.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Frazier Walton and Goldie Ward. She graduated from Finley Senior High. She was a member of New Southern Rock Baptist Church as well as the Finley Alumni Chapter of Washington, Maryland and Virginia.

Surviving are her husband, Samuel Moore Sr.; two sons, Samuel Moore Jr. and Charles Moore, both of Washington; two daughters, Vera Moore and Dianne Holpi, both of Washington; and her stepdaughter, Mary Baker of Fayetteville, N.C.

The family is at the home of Mrs. Maggie Brown, 35 E. White St., Chester.

Gore's Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

April Neilson

ROCK HILL - Miss April Marie Neilson, 14, of 2606 Camelot Drive died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Charlotte, with the Revs. Billy Miller and Mark Devito officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

Miss Neilson was a native of Charlotte. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Pineville, N.C., and attended Resurrection Lutheran Church School. She was a member of the worship team and sang in the choir.

Surviving are her father, Kevin A. Neilson of Charlotte; her mother, Julie H. McDaniel of Rock Hill; her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Phyllis Neilson of Charlotte; her maternal grandparents, James W. "Mitch" and Janice Hearn of Rock Hill; and her maternal great-grandparents, Wilma and John Hawse of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2825 Shenandoah Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205.

Julia Nichols

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Julia Bolder Nichols of 551 Locust St. died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jesse E. Boulware officiating and the Revs. Ella Fewell and Helena Jones assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church, where she was president of the Senior Missionary Society, adviser for the Pastor's Aide Society, member of the Burial Aide Society No. 17 and the Senior Usher Board and supervisor of the Junior Usher Board. She also taught Children's Church and was a member of the Vocal Choir. She was active in the Minister's, Deacon's and Trustee's Wives Auxiliary. She retired from Winthrop University after 30 years of service. She attended Emmett Scott High School.

Surviving are her husband, David Nichols; three sons, Terry Nichols, Jerry Nichols and Patrick Nichols, all of Rock Hill; three daughters, Wanda G. Nichols, Juanita Nichols and Shirley Nichols, all of Rock Hill; four brothers, Robert Bolder of Washington, Joe Louis Bolder of Columbus, Md., and Nathaniel Bolder and Sammie Bolder, both of Rock Hill; three sisters, Ernestine Long, Blanche Nichols, and Elinda Bolder, all of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren, one of whom she reared, Tomika Nichols of Rock Hill; and two great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home and the body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
