Viola Franklin

CHESTER - Mrs. Viola Peak Franklin, 79, formerly of Chester, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Fairfield Manor in Ridgeway.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Bishop officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Franklin was born in Fairfield County and retired from Johnson Laura-Mae Textiles. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Church. Mrs. Franklin was divorced.

Surviving are two brothers, Earl C. Peak and Sam F. Peak, both of Columbia; and five sisters, Bessie Yongue of Chester, Nellie Jordan of Columbia, Lillie Allen of Hendersonville, N.C., Virgie Dollahan of North Little Rock, Ark., and Rhoda Aberg of Superior, Neb.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

James Gregory

CHESTER - Mr. James "Dooley" Gregory, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sandy River Baptist Church, with Mr. Gregory's son, Pastor Alonzo Gregory, officiating and Pastors Ronald McClurkin, Moses Lightner and Keith Taylor assisting.

Mr. Gregory attended Chester County public schools and was retired from the maintenance department of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. He was a retired World War II veteran and a member of Sandy River Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Arbeauters Gregory of the Wilksburg community; four sons, Alonzo Gregory, Ronald Gregory, Donald Gregory and Garfield Gregory, all of Chester; four daughters, Ella G. Spann of Columbia and Dorothy G. Davis, Hattie G. Dixon and Linda Gregory, all of Chester; his brother, Alonzo Gregory of the Wilksburg community; four sisters, Maggie Land and Rachel Robbins, both of Chester, Louise Cureton of New York and Mageline Laws of Charlotte; 32 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy G. Davis, 100 Torbit St., Apt. 7-F

The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, is in charge.

James Huff

PINEVILLE, N.C. - Mr. James Smith Huff, 83, of 12920 Dorman Road died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Mercy Hospital South.

The funeral will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Doby's Bridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, with the Revs. Edgar N. McCall and Troy Phillips officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Graceland Cemetery in Greenville.

Mr. Huff was a Greenville native, a retired electrical engineer and a member of Doby's Bridge Presbyterian Church. He was the widower of Sarah Helen Thompson Huff.

Surviving are his daughter, Peggy Huff Childress of Fort Mill; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service and at other times at the home of Peggy Huff Childress, 103 Spring Branch Road, Fort Mill.

Memorials may be made to Doby's Bridge Presbyterian Church building fund, 2500 Doby's Bridge Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.

Arlene Patterson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Arlene L. Patterson, 84, of 193 Bailey St. died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with Dr. Timothy McClendon and the Rev. Linda Dunn officiating.

Mrs. Patterson was a native of England. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. She was a secretary for the Children's Nature Museum and later a counselor for the Council on Aging. She was past president of Ebenezer P.T.O. and the Rock Hill Woman's Club.

Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Patterson of Columbia and William D. Patterson of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the St. John's United Methodist Church Family Life Center, P.O. Box 149, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

James Perry Jr.

YORK - Mr. James A. Perry Jr., 34, of 2961 Spreading Oak Lane died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Burial will be 1 p.m. today at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Elgin.

Mr. Perry was a native of Cherokee County and had served in the Navy. He was a truck driver and attended York Technical College.

Surviving are his parents, James A. Perry Sr. of Hickory Grove and Joanne Ross Medley of Elgin; his stepfather, Roger Medley of Elgin; his stepmother, Melissa Perry of Hickory Grove; his girlfriend, Dawn Helms of York; three brothers, Patrick E. Perry of Elgin, Jason F. Shillinglaw of Charleston and Daniel C. Perry of Hickory Grove; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Ross of Elgin.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Arlene Strickland

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Arlene Strickland Strickland, 73, of 3625 Turner St. in Kannapolis, N.C., died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 8 tonight at the Colonial Chapel of Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis, N.C., with the Rev. Beaver Hammonds and David Helms officiating. Burial will be at Carolina Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Strickland was born in Horry County. She worked in the cafeteria at Landis Elementary School, at Cabarrus Hospital and in farming. She was a member of Landis Tabernacle Church and was the daughter of the late Alvie and Polly Foley Strickland.

Surviving are her husband, Wallie D. Strickland of the home; two sons, Tony Dayton Strickland of Landis, N.C., and Franklin Donald Strickland of Concord, N.C.; six daughters, Betty Grainger of Rock Hill, Elenar Faye Finney of Rockwell, N.C., Mary Joe White of Kannapolis, Patricia Ann Register of China Grove, N.C., Beulah M. Fink of Landis, and Sylvia Jean Henderson of Rockwell; her brother, Duston Strickland of Rock Hill; her sister, Ella Mae Harrelson of Loris; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis. Memorials may be made to Charity Baptist Church building fund, 2420 Brantley Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

The body will be taken to Carolina Baptist Church to lie in state Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. with a graveside service afterward.

Elizabeth Varnadore

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Elizabeth Carter Varnadore, 86, of 5550 Golf Course Road died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Lancaster.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating.

Mrs. Varnadore was born in Lancaster County and was retired from J. P. Stevens. She was a member of Camp Creek United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Wallace Varnadore. She was the daughter of the late James Thomas and Lillia Mae Bell Carter.

Surviving are three daughters, Pat Butler of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Edith Lanier and Esther Baker, both of Great Falls; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be made to Camp Creek United Methodist Church, 4721 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home is in charge.

James Weldon

CHESTER - Mr. James "Big June" Weldon, 70, of 132 Steinkuhler St. died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.E. Page officiating. The burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Weldon was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, where he was a former choir member, trustee and parking attendant.

He was a former employee of the Chester Metropolitan Water District. He was educated in the Chester County public schools and he was the widower of Essie Weldon.

Surviving are his companion, Genette Hemphill of the home; and several cousins.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body will be carried to the church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.
