Emma Mitchell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Emma L. Mitchell, 83, of 1312 Crawford Road died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral was Sunday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.H. Bailey officiating and the Revs. C.B. White-Kiser, C. Dunlap, C.H. Williams and W.E. Page assisting The Rev. B.R. Wilson, her grandson, gave the eulogy. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A retired domestic worker, Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of Ulysses Mitchell. She was educated in York County public schools and at Clinton Junior College. She was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the senior musical choir at Nazareth Baptist Church, as well as a member of AP&B Society No. 23 and past president of Missionary Circle No. 1.

Surviving are her son, Samson Mitchell of Rock Hill; her daughter, Earlene M. White of Rock Hill; 21 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Parker Funeral Home was in charge.

Billie Philbert

FORT MILL - Mrs. Billie C. Philbert, 90, of 145 Cedar Hollow South died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Mercy Hospital South.

Burial was at Grandview Memorial Park in Dunbar, W.Va.

Mrs. Philbert, a native of Putnam County, W.Va., was the daughter of the late Herbert Ray and Ethel Mack Carter. She was retired from the outdoor amusement industry. Mrs. Philbert moved to Heritage USA in 1987 from Tampa, Fla.

Surviving are her son, Arnie "Dick" Wilkinson of Lakeview; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2838 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205, or to the National Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 212634, Columbia, SC 29221-2634.

Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge.

Benjamin Watkins Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Benjamin Cleveland Watkins Jr., 75, of 1661 Celanese Road died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mike Black officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Watkins was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church where he was an elder, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a native of the Lesslie Community, and the son of the late Benjamin C. and Inez Garris Watkins Sr. He served in the Army as a squad leader in France and Germany during World War II. He was retired from Springs Mills, Grace Bleachery, after 37 years.

Surviving are wife, Emily Culp Watkins; two daughters, Rhonda W. Huffman and Pamela W. Self, both of Lancaster; his stepson, Donald E. Moore of Rock Hill; his brother, W. Calvin Watkins of Rock Hill; three sisters, Jessie W. Rodgers and Helen W. Jenkins, both of Rock Hill, and Mildred W. Williams of Spartanburg; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church cemetery fund, 1571 S. Anderson Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Mae Caldwell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mae Etta Caldwell, 62, of 1292 Stanley Drive died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Lesslie, with the Rev. L.L. Robertson officiating and the Revs. Lavenia Pride, George McCoy, Zeola Robinson and Ronal King assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A homemaker, Mrs. Caldwell was educated in York County public schools. She was a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church and its Choir No. 1 and Missionary Society.

Surviving are her companion, Horace Grooms of Rock Hill; six sons, Anthony B. Caldwell of Anchorage, Alaska, Clarence H. Caldwell of El Paso, Texas, John K. Caldwell and Mark R. Grooms, both of Charlotte, and Quinton W. Caldwell and Johnny Mackey, both of Rock Hill; two daughters, Cynthia Grooms-Jennings of Rock Hill and Patricia Ann Newton of Bennettsville; her mother, Essie Mae Barnette of Rock Hill; five brothers, James C. Barnette and Charles R. Barnette, both of Anchorage, Dewey O. Barnette of Washington, and Lorenzo "Mack" Barnette and Steven A. Barnette, both of Rock Hill; five sisters, Angela F. Barnette of Anchorage, Brenda S. Barnette of Charlotte, Deborah B. Barnette, Clementine B. Mitchell and Donetta B. Smith, all of Rock Hill; 18 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home and at the home of her mother, Essie M. Barnette, 1226 Calhoun St., Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from noon until 6 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.

Kenneth Davis

YORK - Mr. Kenneth Ray Davis, 42, of 1 Center St. died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. C.J. Jenkins officiating and the Revs. Johnny Burris, Caldwell Culp, Mildred Patton and Melvin Douglas assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

Mr. Davis was a plate operator laboratory technician at AMP Inc. in Rock Hill. He was a graduate of Lowell High School and Lowell College in Lowell, Mass. He also received degrees from Gaston College in Dallas, N.C. He was licensed to treat water in 36 states and was a computer operator. A former government employee, he worked with the missile program.

Surviving are his wife, Vanessa E. Davis of Rock Hill; five sons, Kenneth Tyrone Curry, Shawn Curry, Damitrus Curry, all of Gastonia, N.C., and Tezo Ervin and Aaron Ervin, both of Rock Hill; two daughters, Jade Emerald Davis and Rosalind Ervin, both of Rock Hill; his father, Alex Davis of Dallas, N.C.; his mother and stepfather, Gloria and Charles Agurs, both of the home; four brothers, Willie Eric Adams Davis and Jay Harris Davis, both of York, and Abraham Davis and Solomon Davis, both of Dallas, N.C.; his sister, Alexis Davis of Dallas, N.C.; his step-grandmother, Mamie Agurs of Chester; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church and at other times at the home.

Ray Gainey

LANCASTER - Mr. Ray William Gainey, 69, of 2231 Great Falls Highway died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. James Spencer and Eddie Usher officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mr. Gainey had been a driver for Lancaster Tours. A native of Chesterfield, he was the son of the late Arthur Lee and Arnie Elizabeth Malloy Gainey.

Surviving are his wife, Maude Dean Thomas Gainey; four sons, Rick A. Gainey, Tim M. Gainey, Ken R. Gainey and Chuck Gainey, all of Lancaster; his daughter, Naida Starnes of Lancaster; his stepson, Robert Lee Terry Jr. of Lancaster; four stepdaughters, Tammy Terry, Sharon Jenkins and Ginger Helms, all of Lancaster, and Tammy Trotter of Great Falls; his stepmother, Mildred Gainey of Lancaster; his brother, Dee Gainey of Charlotte; four sisters, Lillie C. Kee of Kershaw, Clara Faulkenberry of Smyrna, Tenn., and Vera Knight and Margie Steen, both of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Doris Gibson

FORT MILL - Mrs. Doris Jean Alexander Gibson, 64, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bob Watkins officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gibson was employed for 14 years with AFAC/Imperial Fire Hose Co. A native of Taylorsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter P. Foster and Annie Ruth Alexander Petrea.

Surviving are her husband, Leonard H. Gibson; her son, James H. West of Weddington, N.C.; four daughters, Donna R. West of Charlotte, Anita P. Locklear of Fort Mill, S. Gaye Madson of Rock Hill, and Pamela J. Howson of York; her stepdaughter, Gail Westfall of Charlotte; and her sister, Nell Helms of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; her step grandchild; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel.
