James Garris

CHARLOTTE - Mr. James W. "Jim" Garris, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel, with the Revs. Joel Collette, Larry Wilson and Robert H. Sims officiating. Entombment will be at Sunset Memory Gardens with Masonic Rites by Steele Creek Masonic Lodge No. 737.

Mr. Garris was the owner and operator of Garris Auto Service. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, where he was deacon and former trustee. He served in the Navy during World War II. He helped train volunteer firemen in Mecklenburg County, was a former Scout Master and was a Roundtable Commissioner for the Mecklenburg Council of Boy Scouts. He was member of Steel Creek Masonic Lodge No. 737, Scottish Rites Bodies, Oasis Temple of the Shrine and was past Patron of Steele Creek Eastern Star Chapter No. 339.

Surviving are his wife, Grace McCorkle Garris; two sons, James Perry Garris Sr. and Glenn D. Garris, both of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Trinity Baptist Church building fund, 2009 W. Arrowood Road, Charlotte, NC 28217.

Mary Gay

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Bechtler Gay, 76, of Magnolia Manor died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Tim McLendon officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Gay was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. She was a retired office worker with Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. She was the widow of Fletcher M. Gay.

Surviving are three brothers, Marion Bechtler of Rock Hill, Gene Bechtler of Lexington and Tom Bechtler of Hickory Grove; and her sister, Frances B. Davidson of Taylors.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her sister-in-law, Irene Bechtler, 1169 Dunlap Roddey Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 5019 Nations Crossing, Suite 217, Charlotte, NC 28217.

R. Rudolph Harrison

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Raleigh Rudolph Harrison, formerly of 1037 Glenarden Drive, Rock Hill, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Floretta Watkins officiating and the Rev. John Murdock assisting. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Holmes will give the eulogy. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Harrison was a native of York County. He was a member of Hermon Presbyterian Church. He was a former Elk, a senior citizen volunteer and attended York County public schools.

Surviving are two sisters, Mattie H. Steele of Philadelphia and Robbie H. Diggs of Charlotte.

The body may be viewed at 9 a.m. Friday, and the family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.

David Hattrich

CHARLOTTE - Mr. David Oliver Hattrich, 42, of 3126 No. 202 Park Road died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Memorial Garden in Charlotte.

Surviving is his daughter, Jennifer Hattrich of Fort Mill.

Richmond Funeral Home, 6701 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, is in charge.

George Maxie Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. George Eddie Maxie Sr., 81, of 1865 Twin Lakes Road died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Patricia Griffith Fallaw and Bart Plaxco officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Maxie retired as a sergeant with the Rock Hill City Police Department in 1978. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Elks Club and the Rock Hill Police Pistol Club. He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II in the 10th Mountain Division receiving the Combat INF Badge, Bronze Star, EAME Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He was a heavy mortar crewman and an M-1 rifle marksman. He was the widower of Catherine Campbell Maxie.

Surviving are two sons, J. Benny Maxie and George E. Maxie Jr., both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Janet Plaxco of York; his brother, Horace J. Maxie of Walhalla; his sister, Earline Waldt of Conyers, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2115 Celanese Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Emma Mitchell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Emma L. Mitchell, 83, of 1312 Crawford Road died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.H. Bailey officiating and the Revs. C.B. White-Kiser, C. Dunlap, C.H. Williams and W.E. Page assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A retired domestic worker, Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of Ulysses Mitchell. She was educated in the York County public schools and at Clinton Junior College. She was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the senior musical choir at Nazareth Baptist Church, as well as a member of AP&B Society No. 23 and past president of the Missionary Circle No. 1.

Surviving are her son, Samson Mitchell of Rock Hill; her daughter, Earlene M. White of Rock Hill; 21 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at Parker Funeral Home today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home.

Frances Mobley

KERSHAW - Mrs. Frances Eileen "Sal" Reeves Mobley, 74, of 509 East Hilton St. died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryant Fersner officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Mobley was a homemaker and a graduate of Perry Business College in Lancaster. She attended Belleville Junior College in Belleville, Ill. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Ruth Sunday school class and the Woman's Missionary Union Mission Group Two. She was a member of the King Alfred Garden Club, the Lancaster Music Study Group, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, John D. Kennedy Chapter No. 308, and a member of the Catawba Wateree Genealogy Society.

Surviving are her husband, John M. Mobley; two sons, Charles J. Mobley of Savannah, Ga., and David M. Mobley of Lancaster; her brother, C. Joe Reeves of Kershaw; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067.
