Charles Small

LANCASTER - Mr. Charles Edward Small, 66, of 1211 E. Confederate Ave. died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at High Point Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Stuart Snow and James Wilhide officiating. Entombment will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Mr. Small was retired from Lancaster County law enforcement. He was a member of High Point Freewill Baptist Church, the S.C. National Guard, Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380 and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association. He was a veteran of the Navy and Army.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Bailey Small; his son, Charles D. "Chuck" Small of Lancaster; his daughter, Teresa Kennington of Lancaster; four brothers, Clyde Small, Dewey Small, Johnny Small and Richard Small, all of Lancaster; five sisters, Geneva "Mary" Moody of Flint, Mich., and Margaret Caskey, Margie Hough, Betty Rowell, and Judy Williams, all of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at High Point Freewill Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to High Point Freewill Baptist Church, 2095 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, 3795 Pleasant Plain Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Ruby Smith

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Ruby Newsom Smith, 77, of Charlotte died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Mercy Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, with the Rev. Mike Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Smith was employed for 15 years with NCNB as a bookkeeper. She later owned and operated Smith's Stop, a bait and tackle shop. She was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and was the widow of Edward Hope Smith.

Surviving are her brother, Oliver Lyle Newsom of Charlotte; and her half-brother, Louis Newsom of Florence.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.

Memorials may be made to Lake Wylie Baptist Church, 15700 Red Fez Club Road, Charlotte, NC 28278.

Lucille Washington

SALISBURY, N.C. - Mrs. Lucille Hill Washington of Salisbury, N.C., died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's AME Zion Church in Hamtiamck, Mich., with the Rev. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at Detroit Memorial Cemetery Park East.

Mrs. Washington was a native of Detroit.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Ralph Washington of Rock Hill; and her daughter, Ethel Beard of Detroit.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at St. Peter's AME Zion Church.

Cole Funeral Home, 2624 West Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48208, is in charge.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Louise Wilks

YORK - Ms. Janie Louise Wilks, 77, of 119 Lowry Row died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Christian Home Baptist Church in Lowrys, with the Rev. Lloyd Reid officiating and the Rev. Daniel Chisholm assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Ms. Wilks was employed as a cook for many years at Smith's Lunch in York. She was a member and Mother of the Church at the Christian Home Baptist Church in Lowrys.

Surviving are two sons, Codell Alexander Wilks of Long Island City, N.Y., and Victor M. Wilks of York; 10 daughters, Anna L. Sims, Rebecca W. Love, Mary Louise Hardin, Maggie J. Ratchford and Lillie Bell Ratchford, all of York, Martha Judge, Cynthia Ann Wilks and Carolyn Jean Wilks, all of Rock Hill, and Maggie Hemphill and Pauline Wilks, both of Long Island City; 18 grandchildren, two of whom she raised, Hugh D. Sims and Keith B. Sims; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Jeanette Williams

CHESTER - Mrs. Jeanette Shedd Ross Williams, 83, formerly of Mobley Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. Donald Scoggins and Chip Sneed officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Sharon, Mrs. Williams was retired from Springs Industries. She attended York County public schools and was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three sons, James D. Ross of Chester, Bobby R. Ross and Thomas E. "Gene" Williams, both of Fort Mill; two sisters, Louise Lee and Beulah Linkletter, both of Chester; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Gertrude Bowers

KERSHAW - Mrs. Gertrude Adams Bowers, 82, of 3855 Mining Road died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, with the Revs. James E. Reppart and Donald Ghant officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bowers was a retired employee of Springs Industries. She was a member of Kershaw Senior Citizens, Order of Eastern Star No. 146, White Bluff Young at Heart Group and Pleasant Plain Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Raeford Bowers of Heath Springs; three daughters, Marion Phillips of Kershaw, Peggy Blackmon of Blythewood and Barbara Hegler of Lancaster; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, 3777 Pleasant Plain Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Bernadine Cooper

LANCASTER - Mrs. Bernadine Buckelew Cooper, 80, of 204 Azalea Road died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Shane Patrick and Roy Barnes officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Cooper attended the University of Alabama. She was former co-owner, operator and bookkeeper for Buckelew Variety Store. She was a retired employee of Lancaster Natural Gas Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was in the Oasis Club. She was a former Lancaster County school board member and served on the Lancaster Mental Health Board.

Surviving are three daughters, Bunny King and Barbara Adams, both of Lancaster, and Naomi Cooper of Phoenix; her son, Ralph W. "Joe" Cooper of Columbia; her sister, Frances Murray of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church family life center, 300 S. Market St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge.
