Jack Robert Hutcheson

ROCK HILL - Jack Robert Hutcheson, a tireless community volunteer, always helped his friends and almost never missed his morning cup of coffee with his buddies.

The former Rock Hill city council member died Saturday at Piedmont Medical Center. He was 85 and lived at 1330 Indian Hook Road.

Hutcheson's mornings nearly always started with a cup of coffee at Watkins Grill, Caldwell Barron said.

Barron, Hutcheson and six other older men were charter members of the Bunch of Old Geezers Sitting Around Talking About Critical Matters, or BOOGSATACM for brevity's sake.

"I always enjoyed his company, " Barron said. "He was there up until last week."

The conversation was lively and left no doubt that Hutcheson wanted to help people.

"I think we solved all of the city's and the world's problems, " Barron said laughing. "I'm going to miss Jack. He was a very good person."

Real-estate broker Frank Green saw that goodness up close.

He was having problems with the owner of a piece of land he sold when Hutcheson, a former banker, stepped in.

"(The owner) tried to bypass me and close the deal himself, cutting me out of my commission, " Green said. "But he put a stop to that."

"Jack said, "Either Frank Green gets his commission, or you don't get the loan,'" said Green, who also knew Hutcheson from his membership in the Kiwanis Club. "He was a fine person."

The memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Verdery officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Born in Buchanan, Ga., Hutcheson graduated from Clemson University in 1934. He retired from First Federal Savings & Loan as senior vice-president.

Hutcheson joined the U.S. Army before Pearl Harbor was bombed and stayed enlisted until after Germany surrendered. He was a lieutenant colonel, serving from Feb. 10, 1941, to July 24, 1945, in a number of countries including England, France, Belgium and Germany. He graduated from Command and General Staff School.

When he returned to the states, Hutcheson became the first post commander of the American Legion Post #34 in Rock Hill and the district and area commander of the legion.

That was only one of his many civic posts. Hutcheson was also a director and president of the Salvation Army Board, the YMCA, the Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, the Rock Hill Country Club and the Rock Hill United Way Fund.

A director of Rock Hill National Bank, Hutcheson also served his community as a trustee in the Rock Hill school district and Rock Hill City Council, and director of Old York County Hospital.

Hutcheson was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and elder.

Surviving are his son, Jack R. Hutcheson of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Dora H. Bowman of Rock Hill and Wills H. Shores of Vienna, Va.; two brothers, Warren H. Hutcheson of Marietta, Ga., and Homer H. Hutcheson of Carrollton, Ga.; three sisters, Ruth H. Drew of Cedartown, Ga., Georgianne M. Wills of Cedartown, Ga., and Elsa H.
