Helen McDow

LANCASTER - Mrs. Helen Williamson McDow, 98, of 310 Gillsbrook Road died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Ernie Thompson and Sam Thomas officiating.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. McDow was a homemaker and received a teaching certificate from Winthrop College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her son, Dr. W.L. McDow of Kershaw; her daughter, Mary Frances McDow Ramsey of Eufaula, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 990, Lancaster, SC 29721-0990.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Mary Louise Nelms

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Rev. Mary Louise Adams Nelms, 81, of 5120 Carolina Beach Road died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Virginia.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel, with the Rev. Carson Linkous officiating. Burial will be at Blackmon Cemetery.

The Rev. Nelms was a member of the Church of God and was a homemaker. She was the widow of John Arthur Nelms.

Surviving are two sons, James Nelms and John Nelms, both of Wilmington; four daughters, Frances Harton of Charlotte, Marie Gregory of Pulaski, Va., Nancy Allred of Ramsaum, N.C., and Barbara Booyer of Spring Lake, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Barney Sutton

FORT MILL - Mr. Barney Odell Sutton, 74, of 10 W. Leroy St. died Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Whitesell-Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Sutton was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and participated in the Iwo Jima invasion.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Sutton; his son, Barney Odell Sutton Jr. of Fort Mill; his daughter, Janice Smith of Asheville, N.C.; his stepmother, Bertie Sutton; four sisters, Betty Patterson of Fort Mill, Sherly Pierson of Wilmington, Del., Carol Shealy of Easley, and Linda Maxey of Chatham, Va.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Whitesell-Wolfe Funeral Home.

Herbert Williams

YORK - Mr. Herbert Williams, 87, of 16 Maiden Lane died Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church in York, with the Rev. S. Franklin Russell officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Mr. Williams was a retired textile employee at Sullivan and Carson. He was a trustee at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church and the Lux Fiat Masonic Lodge No. 254.

Surviving is his wife, Sitrena F. Williams of the home.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 6:30 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, at which time Masonic Rites will be performed.

Luceille Mitlin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Luceille Liston Mitlin, 79, assistant professor emeritus of Mississippi State University, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be private. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Mrs. Mitlin was head of the sciences section of the university library, and set up one of the first computerized information retrieval services in the Southeast.

After her retirement in 1979, she moved to Rock Hill and served as an adjunct professor in the library at Winthrop University. She was the author of several scholarly papers and was a member of several honorary societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Phi Alpha, Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Gamma Epsilon.

A native of Clarksburg, W.Va., Mrs. Mitlin earned an A.B. degree from West Virginia University and an M.A. from Mississippi State University. She was a chemist with Lever Brothers and the Good Housekeeping Institute, and taught school in Montgomery County, Md.

Surviving are her husband, Norman Mitlin; her son, Laurance Mitlin of Rock Hill; her brother, Laurence Liston of Bethesda, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Laurance Mitlin and Debbie Mollycheck.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Helen Troxell

FORT MILL - Mrs. Helen Troxell, 78, of 7060 St. Paul St., Twin Lake Estates, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at Lakeview Living Center in Pineville, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, with Pastor Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Born in Long View, Texas, Mrs. Troxell was a retired bookkeeper, and a member of the Eastern Star. She was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Tina Hinson of Charlotte; and her grandchild.

Memorials may be made to South Charlotte Baptist Church, 12416 Lancaster Highway, Pineville, NC 28134.

Ruth Barnett

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruth Summers Barnett, 88, of 4020 S.C. 324 died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rickie Martin officiating and the Rev. Jimmy Holley assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Born in Anniston, Ala., Mrs. Barnett was retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corp., where she was employed in the coning department for more than 21 years. She was a member of Eastview Baptist Church. She was the widow of Hester T. Barnett.

Surviving are two sons, William Wallace Barnett of Atlanta and Charles T. Barnett of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Rosa Lee Clinton of Rock Hill and Peggy B. Ratterree of Atlanta; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Dot Lefler of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Eastview Baptist Church, 1430 Gordon Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
