Dessie Horton

WAXHAW, N.C. - Mrs. Dessie Newton Horton, 93, of 805 Old Providence Road died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Renaissance Health & Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Osceola United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Bob Dunn and Bert Watson officiating.

Born in Cleveland County, N.C., Mrs. Horton retired as a professional nanny. She was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church. She was the widow of John Pinkney Horton.

Surviving are her son, John Newton Sheppard of Bradley Beach, N.J.; her daughter, Jane Spake of Waxhaw, N.C.; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Osceola United Methodist Church building fund, 6575 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Minnie La Frage

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Minnie Cook La Frage, 100, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, with the Revs. Alan Mallory and John McArthur officiating.

Born in Cabarrus County, N.C., Mrs. La Frage was a homemaker. She was the oldest member of Six Mile Creek Presbyterian Church in Indian Land during its existence and was the pianist there for many years. She was the widow of Leland La Frage.

Surviving are two sons, James La Frage of Camden and Murphy E. La Frage of Sharon; two daughters, Coe L. Lyman of North and Mary L. Snow of Charlotte; two sisters, Doris Ross of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Helen Cook of Concord, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Eau Claire Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3156, Columbia, SC 29230.

McEwen Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

Corey McKenzie

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Corey Lynn McKenzie, 24, of Lake Wateree died Sunday, March 8, 1998.

The funeral and visitation will be announced by Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Born in Chester County, Mr. McKenzie was a forklift operator at Willamette Industries and attended Great Falls schools.

Surviving are his wife, Joann W. McKenzie; his son, Gerald Corey McKenzie of the home; his daughter, Ashley Marie McKenzie of the home; his parents, Gerald and Emily McKenzie of Great Falls; his brother, Scott McKenzie of Great Falls; his sister, Tina Baker of Tripp, S.D.; and his paternal grandparents, Harry and Roseanna McKenzie of Great Falls.

Memorials may be made to Greenlawn Cemetery memorial fund, P.O. Box 462, Great Falls, SC 29055.

Robert Plyler

LANCASTER - Mr. Robert Harrison Plyler, 79, of 2534 Kendlewood Drive died Tuesday, March 10, 1998.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Plyler retired as a loom fixer at the Stevens Plant in Great Falls. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his daughter, Priscilla Stryker of Anaheim, Calif.; his sister, Myrtle Lucas of Ridgeway; five grandchildren; and his niece, Sue Carnes of the home.

Hartley Funeral Home is in charge.

John White

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mr. John White, 99, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at 19th Street Baptist Church, 4606 16th St. N.W.

Formerly of Rock Hill, Mr. White was a dining car waiter for Southern Railroad for 52 years. He founded AFL-CIO Dining Car Waiters' Union and was president of the group for 25 years.

Surviving is his wife, Lottie Blake White.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at 19th Street Baptist Church.

Marshall's Funeral Home is in charge.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Lorene Young

CLOVER - Mrs. Lorene McCloud Young, 82, of 104 Franklin St. died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

Born in Laurens County, Mrs. Young was retired from Randolph Yarns. She was the widow of John B. Young Sr.

Surviving are two sons, John B. Young Jr. of Clover and Lewis Young of Easley; two daughters, Loretta Carter of Piedmont and Deloris Mahaffey of Clover; two brothers, Raymond McCloud of Chester and D.A. McCloud of Lockhart; three sisters, Viola Davis of Clover, Bonnie Gregory of Chester and Pauline Ray of Hampton, Va.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Carolyn Burns

CLINTON - Mrs. Carolyn Hurst Burns, 89, of Presbyterian Home died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Presbyterian Home.

A commital service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Beersheba Presbyterian Church cemetery in York. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in York, with the Rev. Todd Speed officiating.

A native of Macon, Ga., Mrs. Burns was the owner and operator of Burns Jewelry in York. She attended Wesleyan College and taught in Georgia public schools. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in York and was active in the Presbyterian Women Association. She was regent of the Kings Mountain chapter of the D.A.R., president of the U.D.C. and was an organizing member of the White Rose Book Club. She organized the first bookmobile library service for rural areas of South Carolina.

She was the widow of Leslie M. Burns Sr.

Surviving are her son, Leslie M. Burns Jr. of Greenville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends Friday in the ladies parlor after the memorial service.

Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, 801 Musgrave St., Clinton, SC 29325-1796.

Anna Chumley

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Anna Lee Brown Chumley, 70, of 510 Quartermaster Road died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Prince Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Monty King officiating.

A Spartanburg native, Mrs. Chumley was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son, Niles Andrew Chumley of Rock Hill; her daughter, Susan Cox of Moore; her brother, Eugene Brown of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Marjorie Snow of Spartanburg, Shirley Henson of Taylors and Faye Brown of Wellford; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

The family is at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Special Needs Fund, SRMC, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
