FORT MILL - Artist and former shopkeeper Meredith Camann lost a three-year battle against breast cancer Saturday. She was 55.

"The thing that sticks most with me is the way she fought this to the end, " family friend Ken Beam said.

Camann attended morning prayer at St. Paul's Episcopal Church even as she was fighting nausea. "She never gave up, " Beam said.

Beam and his wife, Bobbie, met Meredith Camann and her husband, Jim, when the Camanns opened Hull House Gifts, Galleries and Antiques.

The Camanns had moved to Tega Cay in the early 1980s and Meredith Camann started a local catering business, F. Fantastic Foods. The couple bought Hull House in 1985.

The Camanns closed Hull House Gifts several years ago and began renovating the house, which dates back to 1869, for their residence.

Meredith Camann was a native of Utica, N.Y. The Camanns vacationed yearly at their Adirondack camp in upstate New York, where she was active in the Old Forge Arts Center.

The vacations would usually last from May to September, Beam said. This year's trip was cut short, but "she wanted to go badly, " Beam said.

In the early 1990s, "Meredith worked on a very successful bond referendum campaign for the school district. I worked with her closely on that, " said Beam, who is a former superintendent and business manager for the Fort Mill school district.

She once painted a cover for the Fort Mill Telephone book. A copy of it hangs in the Beam's mountain home, he said.

"We will think of her fondly when we see it, " Beam said.

Camann enjoyed painting and sketching the Adirondack mountains. She helped form the Fort Mill/Tega Cay Arts Association and was past president of the Fort Mill Community Playhouse.

She was a graduate of Harwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., with a degree in music education, and she taught junior and senior high school for 17 years in Vestal, N.Y. She was active with the B.C. Pops and with the symphony in Binghamton, N.Y.

She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church and its choir. Even after she got sick, she wanted to continue to sing in the choir and do solos, said the Rev. Dan Holloway, pastor of Unity Presbyterian Church.

Surviving Camann are her husband, Jim Camann; three daughters, Lisa Camann and Cathleen Davis, both of Fort Mill, Carolyn Camann of Charlotte; two brothers, Stewart Lochner of Dallas and Dr. Jon Lochner of Syracuse, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

"She had a strong faith and used her gifts well, " Holloway said.

Her delightful sense of humor made you glad to be around her, he said.
