Elvie Evans

LANCASTER - Miss Elvie Ellen Evans, 75, of 1242 Trestle Lane died Friday, March 27, 1998, at her home.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Curtis Cameron and Charles Terry officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Chesterfield County, Miss Evans was retired from Springs Industries and attended Temple Baptist Church.

Surviving are her brother, Frank Evans of Lancaster; and her sister, Vivian Wentz of Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Home Care Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

John Jones

ROCK HILL - Mr. John "J.J." Everette Jones, 50, of 1758 Running Brook Lane died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Handley Funeral Home in Danville, W. Va., with the Rev. Tom Price officiating. Burial will be in Mid-Ferrell Cemetery, Brandytown, W.Va.

Mr. Jones was employed with Dixie Rod & Reel and was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge in Madison, W.Va.

Surviving are his wife, Connie Jarrell Jones; his daughter, Jaine Jones of Rock Hill; his mother, Opal Jones; four brothers, Charlie Jones of Chandler, Fla., Roger Jones of Danville, W.Va., Paul Jones and Tommy Jones, both of Alkol, W.Va.; two sisters, Lyda Barker of Foster, W.Va., and Peggy Setser of Fairdale, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. today at Handley Funeral Home.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mary Traxler

COPE - Mrs. Mary Hope Ashe Traxler, 77, of 4441 Bamberg Road died March 27, 1998, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at the Union United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Wells officiating.

Born in Cope, Mrs. Traxler was a member of Union United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years and served on the administrative council. She was also a member of the Union United Methodist Women and Jane Varns Tuesday Morning Bible Study. She was master of Edisto Fork Grange.

She was the widow of Hollis Carn Traxler.

Surviving are her daughters, Mary Claire Grogan of Rock Hill and Liz Smith of Cope; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Rodney and Liz Smith, 4452 Bamberg Road, Cope. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church.

Thompson Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

John King

SWANSBORO, N.C. - Mr. John B. King of 226 Ocean Spray Drive died Friday, March, 27, 1998, at his home.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia, N.C.

Mr. King graduated from Clinton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and marketing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961 and was a member of Swansboro United Methodist Church. He was a former administrative director at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and was a retired territory manager for Bristol-Myers Squibb in the Mead Johnson Nutritional Group. He retired for medical reasons.

He was vice president of the Jaycees in Durham and the Lions Club in Pinehurst, N.C., Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America, and Durham County District Chairman of the Occonneechee Council Boy Scouts of America.

Surviving are his wife, Sherry S. King of Swansboro; two sons, John Bradford King Jr., of Durham, N.C., and James G. Ledford of Gastonia; three daughters, Darcy E. Deen, and Mary Ann Holland both of Durham, N.C., and Hattie E. Ferguson of Chapel Hill, N.C.; his brother, Paul H. King of Cape Carteret, N.C.; his sister, Mary F. King of Greenville, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at York Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Swansboro United Methodist Church building fund, 665 West Corbett Ave., Swansboro, NC 28584.

Frances Odom

CHESTER - Mrs. Frances Sisk Odom, 77, of 674 H. Spence Drive in Chester, died Saturday, March 28, 1997, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Gregg Keller officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A Greenwood native, Mrs. Odom was an employee of Springs Industries until 1968. She was the widow of John E. Odom. She and her husband began Odom's Grocery and Party Shop on York Road, and she continued to own and operate the business after he died in 1975. She attended First Church of the Nazarene and Chester schools.

Surviving are her son, Jerry Odom of Chester; her daughter, Becky Nelson of Chester; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the home, 674 H. Spence Drive in Chester.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 182 Pinckney St., Chester, SC 29706, or to Richland Memorial Cancer Research, c/o Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, SC 29203.

Barron Funeral Home is in charge.

Darryl Reid

ROCK HILL - Mr. Darryl "Doupy" Thomas Reid, 33, of 953 Crawford Road died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at New Mount Olivet A.M.E. Zion Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Sherman B. McBeth officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Reid was a member of New Mount Olivet A.M.E. Zion Church, and ran track and played football at Emmett Scott High School. He also attended York Technical College.

Surviving are two sons, Darren Hope and Ramon Truesdale, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Shameatric Gordon, Courtney Hope, and Whitney Torbit, all of Rock Hill; his mother, Elizabeth Ann Reid of Rock Hill; two brothers, Odell Reid of Bennettsville, and Major Terence Reid of Stafford, Va.; two sisters, Cheryl Webb and Patrice Cherry, both of Rock Hill; and his maternal grandmother, Henrietta Wilkes of Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed at Robinson Funeral Home from 5 to 6 p.m. today.

The family will receive friends at other times at the home.

Estelle Scruggs

ROCK HILL - Ms. Estelle Scruggs, 79, of 334 Wilhurst St., Apt. D, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Baxter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Ms. Scruggs attended Fairfield County public schools. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was in the Missionary Society, Church Aid Society, Hymn Choir and the Gold Plus Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline Mitchell Pendergrass of the home; her brother, Dan Scruggs of Rock Hill; and four sisters, Lula Scruggs of Rock Hill, Rosie Holmes of Blair, Viola Hurst of Baltimore, and Lindsey Chambers of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.
