Marion Whitlock

CLOVER - Mr. Marion Lee "Buck" Whitlock, 79, of 1224 Love Valley Road died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Brookleigh Baptist Church in Gastonia, N.C., with the Revs. Walter Prescott and Bill Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

Mr. Whitlock was the retired owner of Whitlock Paint Co. and most recently worked at Industrial Electroplating in Gastonia. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Virgie Luecille Bradshaw Whitlock; two sons, Anthony T. Whitlock of Hickory, N.C., and Sonny Whitlock of Gastonia; his daughter, Rebecca W. Sherrill of Clover; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home.

Eva Byrd

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Eva Meeks Byrd, 59, of 224 Jefferson Street, formerly of Clover, died Sunday, May 3, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home in York. Burial will be in Uniondale Cemetery in York.

Mrs. Byrd was a native of Clover.

Surviving are her husband, Leon Byrd; her son, Michael Meeks of Gastonia, N.C.; three daughters, Gwendolyn Byrd-McNair of Greenbelt, Md., Sandra Byrd of Hyattsville, Md., and Bridgete Crawford of Minneapolis; two brothers, Willie Meeks of Gastonia and Paul Meeks of Kansas City, Mo.; her sister, Lizzie Meeks-Neely of Gastonia; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home.

Alfred Gurrie

ROCK HILL - Mr. Alfred D. Gurrie, 84, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Freewill Church of Jesus Christ in Cramerton, N.C., with the Revs. Jimmy Painter and Richard Hancock officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Mr. Gurrie was a member of Freewill Church of Jesus Christ in Cramerton, N.C. He was retired from Union Carbide in Charleston, W.Va.

Surviving are his wife, Birdie Shackelford Gurrie; two stepsons, David Shackelford of Rock Hill and Roger Shackelford of Greenville; four stepdaughters, Shirley Miskelly, Pauline Estes, Joan Helms and Tonda Shackelford, all of Rock Hill; 11 stepgrandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Annie Hilton

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mrs. Annie Patton Hilton, 60, of 423 East Davidson Ave. died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at her home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Service Southside Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Miller officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of York County, Mrs. Hilton was retired from Pharr Yarns. She was the widow of John Worth Hilton.

Surviving are her son, James Mitchell Hilton of Gastonia; four daughters, Barbara Nelson, Sheresa "Chichi" Clinton and Linda Downey, all of Gastonia, and Teresa Anderson of York; four brothers, Ralph Patton of California, Richard Patton of Huntersville, Ala., Randall Patton of Seneca, and William Patton of York; three sisters, Ruby Gay of Huntersville, Ala., Linda Reams of Seneca, and Marie Barrett of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

R.B. Holshouser

MONROE, N.C. - Mr. R.B. "Skinny" Holhouser, 77, of Monroe died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Hospice House No. 2 of Union County.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeland Memorial Park.

Mr. Holshouser was a former member of the Monroe Blue Sox baseball team and played music with the Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs band in the 1940s. He retired in 1983 from the Rock Hill plant of Hoechst Celanese.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Mae B. Holshouser; his daughter, Carolyn H. Crook of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Vashti McWhorter and Katie Watts, both of Monroe; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.

Jimmie Hughes

CHESTER - The funeral for Mr. Jimmie M. Hughes, 49, of 620 Angel Road, who died Friday, May 1, 1998, at his home will be 4 p.m. today at Sandy River Baptist Church, with the Rev. Keith Taylor officiating and the Revs. Sandy Drayton, J.D. Hughes Jr., Cliff Dye, A.L. Jinwright and Casey Kimbro assisting.

The Rev. Marvin Hughes will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Hughes was a Chester native. He was a former construction worker and painter. He was a member of the Sandy River Baptist Church, where he was an usher, member of the junior choir and a missionary. He was a 1968 graduate of Finley Senior High School and attended college for two years. He served in the Marine Corps in the Vietnam War, where he receive three purple hearts.

Surviving are his son, Jeffery Hughes of Orangeburg; four daughters, Sandra Boyd, Marquita Hughes and Trabeca Hughes, all of Charlotte, and Eunita Hughes of the home; his mother, Lelia M. Hughes of the home; his maternal grandmother, Geneva McDaniel of the home; six brothers, Albert Hughes, J.D. Hughes Jr. and Terry Hughes, all of Chester, Arthur Hughes of Aiken, the Rev. Marvin Hughes of Greenwood, and Preston Hughes of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Pradensia Drayton of Moncks Corner, Cynthia Hughes of Orlando, Fla., and Helen Hemphill of Chester; his adopted sister, Jessie Osborne of Blythewood; six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home. The body will be taken to the church at 3 p.m. today.

King's Funeral Home is in charge.

Billy Lucas Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Billy Lee Lucas Sr., 50, of 2633 Kendlewood Drive died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Stewart officiating.

Mr. Lucas was a Marine Corps veteran and a mechanic at General Tire.

Surviving are his wife, Jane S. Lucas; two sons, Billy Lee Lucas Jr. and Steven D. Lucas, both of Lancaster; three daughters, Tammy Smith of Charlotte, Kelly Laney and Kerry A. Lucas, both of Lancaster; his mother, Geneva R. Lucas of Lancaster; two brothers, Aaron Lucas and Roger Lucas, both of Lancaster; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 386, Lancaster, SC 29721.
