Cecil Case

FORT LAWN - Mr. Cecil Leaverne Case, 58, of 5807 Willowbrook St. died Thursday May 7, 1998 at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fort Lawn Baptist Church with the Revs. Ted Hodges and John Rumford officiating. Burial will be at Refuge Baptist Church in Camden, with the Rev. Clarence Dorman officiating.

A Camden native, Mr. Case was a member of Fort Lawn Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and had coached the church softball team in 1994. He worked in the inspection department of Springs Industries' Grace Finishing Plant.

Surviving are his wife, Pat Branham Case; his son, William Henry Case of Salisbury, N.C.; and two brothers, Dewey Case of Camden and Robert Case of California.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Lancaster chapel of Cauthen Funeral Home, and other times at home.

William Hastings Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. William "Bill" Howard Hastings Jr., 55, of 615 Summersby St., died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Bill Heustess officiating.

Mr. Hastings was owner and operator of Bill's Tractor Repair Service. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the South Carolina National Guard. He was a graduate of York High School and the Diesel Mechanics School in Racine, Wis. He was owner of the dirt track racing car No. 67 "Granny's Darling" driven by Roddy Bolin

Surviving are his wife, Janice Howell Hastings; two daughters, Shelly Hastings Palmer and Kelly Hastings Curtice, both of Rock Hill; his mother, Verta Jones Hastings of York; his sister, Margaret H. Henson of McConnells; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 477, Chester, SC 29706.

Doris Hill

CHESTER - Mrs. Doris Clark Hill, 65, of 529 Gage St. died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Palmetto Richland Medical Hospital.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Chester Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Sanders officiating.

Mrs. Hill was retired from Springs Industries. She attended the Chester County public schools.

Surviving are her longtime companion, Ernest Garland; her son, Douglas Love of Chester; two daughters, Glenda Martin and Cynthia Smith, both of Chester; two sisters, Odell Lathan of Great Falls and Adrene Melton of Chester; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Barron Funeral Home is in charge.

Robie Howard

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robie N. Howard, 84, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. D. Rodney Frye officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

Mr. Howard was employed as the head loom fixer for Highland Park Manufacturing Co. for more than 35 years and he played for the company's baseball team in the 1930s. He also was employed as head mechanic for a golf cart manufacturing company. He was a member of the Beagle Hunting Club in Cherryville, N.C. He attended Spencer Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are five sisters, Gertrude Rogers and Lexie Winchester, both of Bryson City, N.C., Hettie Howard of Statesville, N.C., Hazel Pruett of Greensboro, N.C. and Tishie Arvey of Franklin, N.C.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Saturday.

David Sikes

FORT MILL - Mr. David W. Sikes, 84, of Fort Mill, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Ray Sikes of Fort Mill, Billy W. Sikes and Dean I. Craig, both of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Sutton Funeral Home in Pageland.

Kenneth Starnes

ROCK HILL - Mr. Kenneth Maxel Starnes, 52, of 328 Keels Ave. died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phil Bostrom officiating and the Rev. Mary France Lynch assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Starnes was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of the New Believers Sunday school class. He was a 1963 graduate of Rock Hill High School and a 1965 graduate of Kings College in Charlotte. He was a training director and supervisor at Eastern Airlines for 22 years. He was the manager of CCI Travel Agency in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his mother, Louise Rainer Starnes of Rock Hill; his brother, Dennis Starnes of Rock Hill; and his sister, Janet Starnes Morrison of Albuquerque, N.M.

Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 1221 Curtis St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Joanna Thornburg

LAKE WYLIE - Mrs. Joanna Bartley Thornburg, 70, of River Hills Plantation died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

Services will not be held.

Mrs. Thornburg was the widow of Lee A. Thornburg. She served as auxiliary president and member of the board of trustees of the Mint Museum of Art in 1996-97. She was an active member of the Costume Collection Committee on which she served two years as chair. Mrs. Thornburg held many offices over the years with the Symphony Guild of Charlotte, including president in 1994-1995.

Surviving are two sons, Eric Scott Thornburg and Bruce Alan Thornburg, both of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
