Martha Adair

CHESTER - Mrs. Martha Lois Hefner Adair, 78, of 585 No-Name Road died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Greg Keller officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Adair was the widow of John W. Adair. She is a former employee of Springs Industries.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda L. Adimaro of Chester and Martha A. Burrows of Winter Haven, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth Lee and Evelyn Sisk, both of Chester; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Grady Stacks

LANCASTER - Mr. Grady "Joe" Stacks, 65, of 566 Old Camden-Monroe Highway died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Thurman Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Stacks was a retired turkey farmer and a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Neal Stacks; two sons, Grady Lynn Stacks and Jerry Franklin Stacks, both of Lancaster; four brothers, Hoyte Stacks of Monroe, N.C., Ware Stacks of Charlotte, and Rayford James Stacks and Larry Gene Stacks, both of Lancaster; three sisters, Martha Stevens, Ann Funderburk and Evelyn Flannigan, all of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Oak Hill Baptist Church, 6437 Oak Hill Church Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Mildred West

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mrs. Mildred Swails West, 68, of 200 Spring Garden St. died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at her home.

A memorial service was in early April.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. West was retired from Twinings Co. Ltd. She was a member of Hunter Hills Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Rick Swails of Greensboro and Roger Barry Swails of Butner, N.C.; her daughter, Jody Roxanne Swails of Greensboro; two brothers, Charles F. Sims and Benny Elliott Sims, both of Heath Springs; three sisters, Eva S. Brown of Greensboro, Lottie S. Kimbrell of Rock Hill, and Shirley Ann Fakenberry of Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Arbor Cottage, Murdock Center, P.O. Box 3000, Butner, NC 27509 or Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

Mark Hollowell

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Mark Thomas Hollowell, 47, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. today at Sardis Presbyterian Church, with Dr. J. Thomas Kort officiating.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, Mr. Hollowell graduated from George Williams College and later received an MBA from Winthrop University. He was employed with the YMCA for 25 years and was vice-president of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte for the past 15 years. He was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and an elder.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Sumwalt Hollowell; his son, Adam Hollowell of Charlotte; his daughter, Beth Hollowell of Charlotte; his parents, Albert and Juanita Hollowell of Dacula, Ga.; two brothers, Jeff Hollowell of Lithonia, Ga., and Dave Hollowell of Winter Springs, Fla.; his sister, Cindy Hollowell of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and his grandparents, Orville and Lucille Crist of Springfield, Ohio.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately after the memorial service.

McDowell St., Ste 410, Charlotte, NC 28204; to Sardis Presbyterian Church youth mission trips, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270; or to the Community Outreach Fund of YMCA of Greater Charlotte, 500 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202.

William "Billy" James Thurman

LANCASTER - Mr. William "Billy" James Thurman, 70, of 1274 Lynwood Drive died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at the Dorn V.A. Medical Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating. Burial will be at Ruby Cemetery in Ruby.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Thurman retired from General Motors in Detroit after 30 years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are three sisters, Mildred Kooley of Baltimore and Cecile T. Hardin and Josephine T. Huffman, both of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 2217 Airport Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Leonard Schmidt

ROCK HILL - Mr. Leonard Joseph "Smitty" Schmidt, 80, of 765 Gatewood Ave. died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at his home.

The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Schmidt was reared in Milwaukee. He was employed with Falk Corp. in Milwaukee for over 37 years. After retirement, he moved to Rock Hill where he was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Z. "Jan" Schmidt of the home; his daughter, Sue Prange Mason of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A vigil will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to St. Anne building fund, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to York County Hospice, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

William Shillinglaw

YORK - Mr. William "Bill" Maloney Shillinglaw, 77, of 197 Arrow Road died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at York ARP Church, with the Rev. Tony Grant officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A York native, Mr. Shillinglaw was an agent for Atlantic Cost Life Insurance Co. He was a farmer, a member of the York Lions Club, a member of the York Philanthropic Masonic Lodge and a member, elder and Sunday school teacher at York ARP Church. He was retired from the S.C. National Guard, was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his brother, Phillip Ormand Shillinglaw of St. Stephens; and three sisters, Ruth S. McDaniel of Fayetteville, N.C., and Rebecca S. Moore and Nell S. Norris, both of York.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to York ARP Church, P.O. Box 475, York, SC 29745.
