Samuel Bailes

CLOVER - Mr. Samuel Israel Bailes, 58, of 3070 S. U.S. 321, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Clover First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Paul Hutchison, Calvin Draffin and Dick Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mr. Bailes was the operator of Bailes Brothers Construction Co. He was a member of the Clover Volunteer Fire Department. He was a retired member of Company A 178 Engineer Co. of the South Carolina National Guard with 33 years of service. He was a member and past Master of Alpine Lodge 208 A.F.M. He was a member of the York County Crescent Shrine Club and a member of the York Rite. He also was an active member of Clover First United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative council of stewards and helped coach the men's softball team. He also was the car owner of the'87 racing team.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Robinson Bailes; his son, Todd Bailes of Clover; his daughter, Robin Killian of Clover; his brother; two sisters; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Tommy Daughtry

MOULTRIE, Ga. - Mr. Tommy Gene "Pop" Daughtry, 67, of Moultrie, Ga., died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home in Camilla, Ga. Burial will be at Pelham Cemetery, with Rev. Charles Odom officiating.

A native of Mitchell County, Mr. Daughtry was a carpenter and a member of Open Christian Fellowship of York.

Surviving are his wife Debbie; three daughters, Nathalie Jean Maggard of Davenport, Fla., Louise Laurette Diederich of Murphy, N.C., and Tammy Jean Pelletier of Omaha, Neb.; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Cote of Brooksville, Fla. and Shirley Taylor of Melbourne, Fla.; four stepsons, Chuck Hawkins of California, Mike Hawkins of Danielson, Conn., Gary Hawkins of Putman, Conn., and Mike Scofinsky of Tucson, Ariz.; four sisters, Oreva Butler of Pelham, Ga., Iram Sassett of Meigs, Ga., Linda Seymour of Pelham, Ga., and Carolyn Barrington of Moultrie Ga.; four brothers, Raiford Daughtry of Camilla, Ga., Hollis Daughtry of Palmetto, Fla.; Raymond Daughtry of Dover, Fla., and Ronald Daughtry of Moultrie, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home in Camilla.

Clara Hinton

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Clara Jackson Hinton, 77, of 636 Center Street in Rock Hill died Friday, May 22, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at By Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church on White Street, with Elder Everett Williams officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Hinton attended the public schools of Fairfield County. She was a member of Izard Street Church of God in Christ, where she served as pastor's aide, usher board president and mother of the church. She was a member of the AP&B Society.

Surviving are 12 sons, Nathaniel Jackson, Robert E. Hinton, Roosevelt Hinton, Clem A. Hinton, Terry L. Hinton, Mark Hinton and Miller Hinton, all of Rock Hill, Willie O. Hinton of Augusta, Ga., Thomas H. Hinton of Sumter, Johnny Hinton and Charlie Hinton, both of Charlotte, and James Hinton of Buffalo, N.Y.; five daughters, Carrie Howard, Patricia Hinton, Doris Davis, Annie Hinton and Cecil Williamson, all of Rock Hill; three sisters, Lucy Reid of Charlotte, Martha Curbean of Rock Hill, and Bessie Hopkins of Pineville, N.C.; three brothers, Tommy Jackson and Lindsey Jackson, both of Charlotte, and Robert Jackson of Baltimore; 75 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friend from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Izard Street Church of God in Christ. They also will receive friends at 334 Chestnut St. The body will be taken to the church at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Robinson Funeral home is in charge.

Franklin Dewey Marshall Jr.

ROCK HILL - Franklin Dewey Marshall Jr., a long-time operator of Marshall Piano Co., died Sunday at his home at 799 Sumter Ave. after an extended illness. He was 75.

Marshall joined the business with his father after World War II, and remained active even after his two sons took it over in the late 1960s, said Dewey Marshall III. He now runs the business with his brother E. Wylie Marshall.

He said his family's business has been in Rock Hill since Marshall's father, F. Dewey Marshall Sr., started it in 1925.

The younger Marshall said the business began as a furniture and piano business and continued to sell furniture until about 25 years ago.

"The piano business just took over the furniture business, " Marshall said.

He said his father was talented musically as well as as a tuner and technician.

"He enjoyed working there, " said Dewey. "That's what he did."

Marshall was an avid golfer and also participated in other activities, many at St. John's United Methodist Church, which he attended.

The Camden native moved to Rock Hill in 1925. He was a graduate of Winthrop Training School and Davidson College. He also served in the U.S. Army.

In his church he served on the board, the choir, taught Sunday school and was a lay minister. He also was active in the Optimist Club and Toastmasters.

A memorial service will be held for Marshall at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church with W. Timothy McClendon officiating.

Marshall's survivors include his wife, Frances Locke Marshall; his daughter, Cammie Brazzell of Rock Hill; two sons, F. Dewey Marshall III and E. Wylie Marshall, both of Rock Hill; his stepson, Robert O. McFadden Jr., all of Rock Hill; two brothers, Harold H. Marshall of Lancaster and Robert K. Marshall of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center of the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or to the charity of one's choice. Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Edward McGuire

FORT MILL - Mr. Edward "Eddie" Downs McGuire, 40, of 250 Amelia Drive died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Independent Bible Baptist Church in Charlotte, with the Revs. Jason Coley and Ron Roddey officiating. Burial will follow at Grand View Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

Mr. McGuire was a Rock Hill native. He worked in the construction field and lived in the Rock Hill and Fort Mill area all his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his mother, Thelma Moss Tollison of Fort Mill; his father, Perry Downs McGuire of Catawba; two sisters, Terry Roddey and Robin McGuire-Gill, both of Rock Hill; and four nieces.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Independent Bible Baptist Church in Charlotte, and other times at the homes of Thelma Tollison, 250 Amelia Drive in Fort Mill, and Perry McGuire, 4262 Cureton Ferry Road in Catawba.

Memorials may be made to Independent Bible Baptist Church, 17025 Lancaster Highway, Charlotte, NC 28277; Victory Baptist Church, 518 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC, 29732; or Lesslie Church of God, P.O. Box 8, Catawba, SC 29704.

Elizabeth Smith

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elizabeth Brice Smith, 92, of Westminster Towers, formerly of Foote Street in Chester, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at home.

A graveside service will be noon Tuesday at Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Chester, with Shelton P. Sanford and William A. Fox officiating. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

A native of Woodward, she was a retired kindergarten teacher at Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill and a former member of Bethel Methodist Church in Chester. She attended Brenau College of Gainesville, Ga., and graduated from Chicora College in Charlotte. She also was a member of Violet Sunshine Club and the Up-To-Date Club.

Mrs. Smith was the widow of John T. Jefferies Smith.

Surviving are her daughter, Sarah Jefferies Calhoun of Halifax, Va., and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home in Chester. The family also will receive friends in the Westminster Tower community room immediately following the memorial service.
