Cheryl Wallace

SMYRNA - Mrs. Cheryl Rose Wallace, 31, of 2922 Legion Road died Friday, May 29, 1998 in Cherokee County.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Midway Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. Jamie Ellis officiating. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia, N.C.

Mrs. Wallace was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was a 1985 graduate of Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia, N.C. She was employed by Bi-Lo Inc. as a private brand coordinator.

Surviving are her husband, Michael E. Wallace; her stepson, Taylor Michael Wallace of Kansas City, Mo.; her father, James W. Rose of Gastonia, N.C.; her mother and stepfather, Jo Ann L. and Ted Robinson of Gastonia, N.C.; her sister, Kimberly Monteith of Gastonia, N.C.; her paternal grandmother, Irene Rose of Tennessee; and her maternal grandparents, Charles and Marie Matthews of Gastonia, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Lyle Whitener, Jr

CLOVER - One of Lyles Whitener Jr.'s duties when he was assistant principal at Clover Junior High School was to enforce the school's discipline policy.

He could take a student in his office in the morning and chew him out, but by noon they would be buddies again, his friends and co-workers said when they learned of his death earlier this week.

"He was loved by those kids, " Ron Wright, the district's director of personnel said. "What a role model he was for those kids."

Whitener died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at his home, 1190 Tom Joye Road.

In addition to friends and families, he left a generation of students who will likely remember him, as he did them.

"We would walk down the halls, he could call each student by name, " Paul Pratt, principal of Griggs Road Elementary School, said Friday. Pratt served as principal for five years with Whitener.

Pratt also stressed how helpful Whitener was to him when they worked together.

"He had been an assistant principal, and I was a new principal. He was very helpful to me. He taught me a lot, " Pratt said. "He was a touch of class."

He took great pride in everything he did, Pratt said. As one of his duties, he was in charge of concessions at the ball games and was famous for his popcorn. Even after he retired, he came back to make his popcorn for the games, Wright said.

Whitener was assistant principal for 17 years at the junior high school. He was a graduate of Allen University in Columbia. He earned his master's degree from Winthrop University.

He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a former Sunday school superintendent and past treasurer of the Brotherhood. He was an active member of the Sandy River Baptist Association.

He was a member of Wilson Lodge F&AM No. 303 and the United Men's Club of Clover. He served on the Clover Medical Facilities Commission and was a veteran of the Air Force.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at St. James United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Surviving are his wife, Amarintha W. Whitener; his son, Michael K. Wright of Rock Hill; his daughter, Millicent W. Dickey of Charlotte; his brother, Harrison Whitener of Clinton; two sisters, Sarah DuBois of Spartanburg and Daisy McTavish of Junction City, Kan.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Generation Funeral Home in Clover.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care Inc., 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to the American Red Cross, 200 Piedmont Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Barbara Zetrouer

AIKEN - Mrs. Barbara Thompson Zetrouer, 50, of Neibling Drive died Thursday, May 28, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Westville Memorial Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.

Mrs. Zetrouer was employed by Greenwood Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of Deer Park Baptist Church in Charleston.

Surviving are her husband, W. Everett Zetrouer; two sons, Bryan E. Zetrouer of Mt. Pleasant and William Scott Zetrouer of Charleston; her daughter, Pamela Diane Vinson of Rock Hill; and her mother, Elizabeth K. O'Quinn of Charleston.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Westville Memorial Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Mamie Greene, 119 Hiawasee Drive, Greenville.

Nettie Arnette

YORK - Mrs. Nettie Almetta McManus Arnette, 96, formerly of Lancaster, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at her home.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park with the Revs. Ron Gregory and Johnny Steele officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Arnette was a member of Glenwood Heights Baptist Church and had retired from Springs Industries after 50 years of service. She was the widow of Lewis Jeffery Arnette.

Surviving are her brother, Jack McManus of El Paso, Texas; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, and other times at the home at 219 E. Liberty St., York.

Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Heights Baptist Church, 600 Nichols Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, is in charge.

Ruth McCune

CLOVER - Mrs. Ruth Mildred McCune, 93, of 211 Shadow Lake Drive died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport, W.Va., with the Easter Star officiating.

A native of Charleston, W.Va., Mrs. McCune was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte. She was the widow of Howard Allen McCune.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia DellaMea of Clover, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

M.L. Ford & Sons is in charge.

Ivah Baker

LANCASTER - Mrs. Ivah Small Baker, 75, of 2013 Flat Creek Road died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. Shane Patrick and Roy Barnes officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Baker was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, C.D. Baker Jr.; her son, Tom Baker of Lancaster; her daughter, Gail Blackmon of Lancaster; her sister, Jeanette Barnes of Lancaster; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at 2013 Flat Creek Rd.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1142 Lancaster, SC 29721.
