Mamie Jordan

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Mamie Lee Pettus Jordan, 70, 2211 Thurmond Place died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Mercy Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witness on Commonwealth Avenue in Charlotte with Brother Caperson officiating. Burial will be at Emmanuel Cemetery in Rock Hill.

Surviving are two sons, John Strong and James Strong, both of Cassett; five daughters, Pettus Suzanne Durham of Columbus, Ohio, Carolyn J. Benjamin, Wendy Byers and Velle Strong all of Charlotte and Peggy J. Brisbon of Camden; her sister, Hattie Pettus of Rock Hill; her brother, David Pettus Jr. of York; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Beasley's Funeral Home and other times at 11413 Antebellum St.

Elaine Neal

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elaine W. Neal, 60, of 414 University Drive died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at First Baptist Church of Fort Mill with the Rev. Jeff Bedwell officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Neal was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Mill. She worked for J.P. Stevens for 23 years as a secretary in the industrial engineering department.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas C. Neal; her daughter, Susan Neal of the home; two brothers, Gary Williams and Henry Williams, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Jeanette Floyd and Mabel Bratton, both of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2535, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Samuel Phillips

CLOVER - Mr. Samuel Arthur "Tot" Phillips, 77, of 2062 Greenleaf Road died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill A.M.E. Zion Church in Clover, with Rev. Terrance Jones officiating, assisted by Rev. M.N. Baxter, Rev. Harold Jones and Rev. Timothy Goode. The body will be placed in the church an hour before the service. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

Mr. Phillips was a retired Sexton hand for the Victory Mill. He was a member of Liberty Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was a member of the Church Aid society, a Sunday school teacher, assistant superintendent and superintendent for Sunday school, a class leader and a trustee. He was a past senior warden for the Booker T. Washington Masonic Lodge No. 274 and a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Ella Phillips of the home; six daughters, Barbara Jamison and Ella Phillips, both of Gastonia, Mary Barnett of the home, Alice Watson of Staten Island, N.Y., Phyllis Lindsey of Charlotte and Marcella Beard of Clover; six sons, Bobby Williams of N.J., William Phillips and Carl Phillips, both of Gastonia, Donald Phillips of the home, Sammy Phillips of Clover and Sylvester Phillips of Susanville, Calif.; four sisters, Macie Thomas and Sarah Moss, both of Gastonia, Clara Lowery of Clover and Geneva Bigger of Lake Wylie; his brother, Henry Phillips of Lake Wylie; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York. Masonic rites will be performed by Booker T. Washington Masonic Lodge No. 274.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Martha Roseboro

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Martha Ola Roseboro of 329 Rich St. died Saturday, June, 6, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Catawba Chapel AME Zion Church in Catawba, with Pastor, Rev. W. R. Johnson III officiating. The eulogy will be by Pastor Mary Crosby, with minister Diane Wells, Martha Page and Rev. Stanley Wells assisting. Burial will be at Grand View Memorial Park.

Mrs. Roseboro was a native of York County. She attended public schools of Catawba, and she was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School. She was a member of the Mount Zion Church and Kingdom God. She served on the deaconess board and was secretary of the missionary society. She was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the Mount Prospect Baptist Church Burial Aid Society.

Surviving are her son, James Melvin Roseboro of Rock Hill; six brothers, Robert Drakeford of N.J., James Barnes and Ronnie Massey, both of Rock Hill, Frank Massey of Lancaster, Hezekiah Massey and Ernest Massey, both of Catawba; two sisters, Frances M. Bullock of Washington D.C. and Janie Barber of Bronx, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon on Tuesday.

Mary Ward

RALEIGH, N.C. - Mary Powell Ward, 85, of 917 Williamson Drive died Saturday, June 6, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 99 North Salisbury St. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ward was a native of Franklinton, N.C., and educated in the Franklinton Public School and Woman's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Livingston Johnson Bible Class, the Colonel Polk Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Canterbury Book Club, the Carolina Country Club, the First Families of North Carolina and the Wake County Medical Society Alliance, where she was president from 1945 to 1946.

She was the widow of William Titus Ward.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Powell Ward White of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Adria Ward Walker of Raleigh; her son, William Titus Ward Jr. of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the home.

Memorial may be made to the Ward Memorial Fund, First Baptist Church, 99 North Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603.

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home is in charge.

Janie Boyd

KERSHAW - Mrs. Janie Lee Harrell Boyd, 62, of 209 S. Matson St. died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryant D. Fersner officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A homemaker, Mrs. Boyd was a member of First Baptist Church, where she attended the Ruth Sunday school class.

Surviving are her husband, Harry L. Boyd; her son, Michael B. Boyd of Columbia; two daughters, Paula Sinclair of Lancaster and Kelly J. Boyd of Kershaw; eight grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund, P.O. Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Mary Brice

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary "May Hight" Patterson Brice of 1127 Calhoun St. died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pineville AME Church, with the Rev. Eugene Goodman officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Brice was a native of York County. She was a member of Pineville AME Zion Church, where she was a deaconess, a member of the usher board, musical choir, dining hall committee, Sunday school class, New Hope Burial Aid Society, Stewardess Board No. 3, and Parent Body Missionary Society. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her son, John Henry Brice Jr. of Rock Hill; six daughters, Joyce Ann Brice of the home, and Rosie B. Hyman, Cynthia B. Robinson, Carolyn Brice, Tina Brice, and Katherine Patterson, all of Rock Hill; her stepdaughter, Phillis Perry of Rock Hill; three brothers, Dewitt Patterson, Buster Patterson, and Wardell Patterson, all of Rock Hill; two sisters, Alice Patterson and Annie Faye Patterson, both of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at 817 Finley Road.

The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
