Sam Lowe

ROCK HILL - Dr. Sam G. Lowe Jr., 80, of 612 Forest Lane died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Westminster Towers in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with Dr. William C. Pender officiating.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery, at DuBose Cross Roads in Sumter County.

Dr. Lowe was a pediatrician. He graduated from Davidson College in 1938 and received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theater and attained the rank of captain before his discharge.

He was in private practice in Rock Hill until he retired in 1972. He was a former chief of staff at York General and St. Phillips hospitals. Following his retirement, he was the medical service director for Carolina Community Action from 1972 to 1976. In March 1982, he was named physician of the year by the Rock Hill Mayor's Committee for exceptional contributions in furthering employment of handicapped individuals. He worked in the Human Development Department at Winthrop University and was on many boards of civic organizations, most of which concerned children and the handicapped. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president. He was an active member of the Rock Hill YMCA where he encouraged others to join swimming activities. He was instrumental in the formation and establishment of York County Hospice, now known as Hospice Community Care.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Anna DuBose Lowe.

The family will receive friends at Greene Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 tonight.

Inez Lucas

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Inez Matheny Lucas, 84, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home in Charleston, W.Va. Burial will be at the Lucas Matheny family cemetery.

Born in Charleston, W.Va., Mrs. Lucas was a homemaker and was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Rock Hill. She was the widow of Arlie Lucas.

Surviving are four sons, Arlie Ray Lucas and Robert Lucas, both of Rock Hill, Jack Lucas of Clinton, Ind., and Jess Lucas of Terre Haute, Ind.; her daughter, Vada Coker of McConnells; her sister, Beulah Bostic of Maulden, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Oakland Baptist Church, 1068 W. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

James Miller

FORT MILL - Mr. James C. "Jim" Miller, 73, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Robert Monson and Edgar McCall officiating. Burial will be at United Cemetery.

A retired merchant seaman with 41 years of service, Mr. Miller was a veteran of World War II, the Korean war and the Vietnam war. He was a past officer of Catawba Lodge No. 56, a York Rites Shriner, a Mason, a member of American Legion post 43, Fort Mill Moose Lodge No. 1240, the VFW post 9138 and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He was the widower of Sarah Clyburn Miller.

Surviving are three sons, Johnny Mack Miller and Michael Edward Miller, both of Raleigh, N.C., and James Clark Miller of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Jesse Miller of Rye, N.Y., and Thad Miller of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters, Ruth Harkey of Crystal River, Fla., Nell Becknell and June Kidd, both of Fort Mill, and Cora Buckles of Bunnell, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Masonic rites will be 6:30 tonight at St. John's United Methodist Church, with visitation following until 9 p.m. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of his sister, June Kidd, 194 Kidd Road, Fort Mill.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 2100 N. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.

Keenan Skerritt

FORT MILL - Keenan Daniel Skerritt, the 16-month-old son of Andrew J. Skerritt and Laurina C. Osborne of Fort Mill, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Wolfe Funeral Home.

Keenan was born April 21, 1997, in Mecklenburg County, N.C.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Khalil Skerritt of Fort Mill; his paternal grandparents, Frances Skerritt of London and Raymond Lewis of Montserrat, West Indies; his maternal grandmother, Mabel Osborne of New York City; and his paternal great-grandmothers, Margaret Skerritt and Margaret Lewis, both of London.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday night at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Downs Syndrome Foundation, P.O. Box 471814, Charlotte, NC 28247.

Ruby Smith

CHESTER - Mrs. Ruby Crawford Smith, 77, of 39 E. White St. died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Winnsboro.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Bishop officiating.

A native of Hart County, Ga., Mrs. Smith was a retired textile employee.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara S. Tinsley of Chester; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home.

Louise Tipton

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Louise Phillips Tipton, 85, of 271 Garden Way, Apt. 41, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Brown officiating and the Revs. Jerry Phillips and Michael Walker assisting. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Westside Cemetery in Lancaster.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Tipton was retired from the Drapery Center and was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Buford High School and was the widow of Earl R. Tipton.

Surviving are three sons, Don Stegall and Jack Stegall, both of Rock Hill, and Harold Stegall of Chadbourn, N.C.; two daughters, Peggy Stegall Lovelace of York and Alice S. McKeown of Rock Hill; four stepsons, Doyle Tipton and Dennis Tipton, both of Columbia, and Delmas "Spud" Tipton and Dan Tipton, both of Rock Hill; four stepdaughters, Amy Tallent, Joy West and Annie Bigham, all of Rock Hill, and Nancy Richards of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Brenda and Don Stegall, 5816 Scotland Yard, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 2697 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Wade Truesdale

YORK - Mr. Wade J. Truesdale, 73, of 2299 Sussex Road died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Alan Arnold officiating.

Memorials may be made to Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, 570 Allison Creek Road, York 29745 or to a charity of one's choice.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
