Andrew Diggs Jr.

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Andrew Apsolon Diggs Jr., 71, of Heath Springs Care Facility died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating.

Mr. Diggs was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are his brother, Webster H. Diggs of Rock Hill; and two sisters, Myrtle D. Robbins of Lillington, N.C., and Ruby Ross D. Sutherland of Brevard, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Barron Funeral Home.

Arthur Benson

LANCASTER - Mr. Arthur "Art" R. Benson, 66, of 1770 Windsor Drive died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. William Walters officiating. Burial will be in Naugatuck, Conn.

Mr. Benson was a retired tool and die maker for Duracell USA. He was a member of the Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380, the Literacy Program, the Kairos Prison Ministry, the Lancaster Moose Lodge, the High Steppers Square Dancing Club in Camden and Christ Episcopal Church.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor "Bonnie" Hayes Benson; his son, Charles Raymond Benson of Naugatuck, Conn.; his daughter, Elizabeth Hulton of Wayne, Maine; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Lancaster County Adult Literacy Program, 302 W. Dunlap St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Georgina Bland

SPARTANBURG - Miss Georgina Ann Bland, 21, of 121 Kalmia St., formerly of Chester, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Wright's Home for Funerals, with the Rev. Everette Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Miss Bland was employed by Wal-Mart stores.

Surviving are her son, Joseph A. Bland of the home; her father and stepmother, George B. and Barbara S. Bland of Chester; her mother and stepfather, Ann and Danny Hardin of Spartanburg; her brother, George B. Bland Jr. of Chester; and seven sisters, Pennie Mullinax of Gaffney, Angela McCorkle and Virgie McKinney, both of Boiling Springs, N.C., Kaye Mosley of Rock Hill, Cathey Harris of Chester, and Valerie Butler and Chris Hardin, both of Ellenboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wright's Home for Funerals.

Memorials may be made to the Joseph A. Bland Fund c/o BB& T Bank, 115 Saluda St., Chester, SC 29706.

Lillie Gill

YORK - Mrs. Lillie Mae Brown Gill, 75, of 20 Magnolia St. died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Fishing Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. John D. Brown III, Daniel Brown, Christine McCoy and William Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gill was a lifelong member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class, hymn choir, AB&P Society and the Missionary Society No. 1.

She received her high school diploma from York Comprehensive High School when she was 55. She was a homemaker and later employed at Fieldcrest Cannon.

Surviving are three sons, the Rev. James Gill of Cranston, R.I., Jody Gill of Laurelton, N.Y., and William Gill of Greenville; nine daughters, Mary Gill and Mamie Daniel of Detroit, Dr. Pamela Franklin of Richmond, Va., Vickie Pendleton of Dover, Del., Leola Love and Bonita Thomason, both of Clover, and Sandra Park, Dora Walmsley and Janie Gill, all of York; four brothers, John Brown, the Rev. Daniel Brown and the Rev. Meek Brown, all of Providence, R.I., and James Brown of York; two sisters, Ellen Neely of Providence, R.I., and Natylum Bratton of York; 26 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the Heart Center at Piedmont Medical Center, 222 South Herlong Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Crystal Irvin

YORK - Miss Crystal Ann Irvin, 22, of 6260 Rockledge Place died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Hospice of Union County.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Midway Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. James Ellis officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

Miss Irvin was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was a waitress.

Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Peggy Ann and Daniel Eddy of the home; her brother, Kenneth Wayne Irvin Jr. of Charlotte; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Gene Eddy of York; her maternal grandparents, Billie and James Sharder of Jacksonville, Fla.; her maternal great-grandmother, Martha Thompson of Charlotte; and her fiance, James Wyatt of Cowpens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, in Gastonia, N.C., and at other times at the home.

The body will be taken to the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mary Jenkins

KERSHAW - Miss Mary Ada Jenkins of 316 N. Minor St. died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Robert Eubanks and Donald McManus officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

Miss Jenkins was a member of Pleasant Plain Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Columbia College, where she earned a degree in music.

Surviving is her sister, Esther C. Jenkins of Kershaw.

The family will receive friends at the home of Esther Jenkins, 316 N. Minor St., Kershaw.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Samuel Blake

ROCK HILL - Mr. Samuel Blake of 952 Pebble Road died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Rock Grove AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Ralph Washington officiating and the Revs. Daran Mitchell, John McCoy, Thomas Barber and John Brown assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Blake was a member of Rock Grove AME Zion Church. He was a 1961 graduate of Emmett Scott High School. The earned two bachelor of science degrees from Central Texas College and from Fayetteville Technical Institute.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 1989 after serving 22 years with the 82nd Aviation Brigade Jump Masters. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and several air medals. He was employed with the South Carolina Catawba Work Release Program for nine years. He was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 106.

Surviving are his wife, Robin H. Blake; his son, Samuel Boyd of Rochester, N.Y.; his daughter, Tameka Blake of Rock Hill; his stepson, Marquis Hilton of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Fredrena Campbell and Jenea Hilton, both of Rock Hill; two brothers, Jeff B. Blake Jr. and Charlie S. Blake, both of Rock Hill; three sisters, Sophie S. Hope, Tora B. White and Tinnie Moore, all of Rock Hill; two grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home and the family will receive friends at the home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
