Joe Johnson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Joe Robert Johnson, 65, of 1818 Doby Drive died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating and the Rev. Ellen Fewell assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Johnson worked for 15 years at Douglas Smith Backhoe and Excavating Co. He attended the public schools in Rockingham County, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Clara Harris Johnson; six sons, Joe Johnson Jr., Robert Lee Johnson, Bobby Lee Johnson and Jerry Johnson, all of Reidsville, N.C., Frank Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., and Michael Johnson of Rock Hill; three daughters, Shirley Ann Thomas of Reidsville, N.C., and Rosalind L. Rawlinson and Bonnie Okoeguale, both of Rock Hill; four brothers, Ralph Johnson of Savannah, Ga., Lewis Johnson of New York, and Roosevelt Johnson and Walter Johnson, both of Reidsville, N.C.; two sisters, Pearl Howard and Mary Alice Harriston, both of Reidsville, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

Susie Smith

LANCASTER - Mrs. Susie Smith of 229 N. Circle Ave. died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Tabor AME Zion Church, with the Revs. Reid White Jr. and David L. Scott officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Smith was a native of York. She was educated at Benedict College, Allen University in Columbia and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. She taught in the public schools of York and Chesterfield counties.

Surviving are her husband, the Rev. P.P. Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 8 tonight at McMullen Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Harold Sterling

ROCK HILL - Mr. Harold Edward "Railroad" Sterling, 49, of 720 Douglas St. died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady and St. Philip Neri, The Oratory, with the Rev. David Valtierra officiating and the Rev. David Boone assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Sterling was a native of York County. He was a 1967 graduate of Emmett Scott High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a graduate of South Central Community College in New Haven, Conn. He was a sheet metal handler.

Surviving are his mother, Stella C. Sterling of the home; two sons, Jermaine Sterling and Harold Sterling, both of New Haven, Conn.; his daughter, Charisse Nowlin of Georgetown; four brothers, Frank Sterling Jr. of Newark, N.J., Ronald J. Sterling, William L. Sterling and Reginald L. Sterling, all of Rock Hill; five sisters, Costella Sterling, Carol Hemphill, Pamela R. Douglas, Wanda Sterling Jennings and Karen M. Howze, all of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Esther Boyer

LANCASTER - Miss Esther Ann Boyer, 89, of 311 North Catawba St. died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at the Lancaster Convalescent Center.

Burial will be at the Bellevue City Cemetery in Ohio at a later date.

A native of Bellevue, Ohio, she graduated from the School of Nursing of the Women's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pa. After graduation, she joined the staff and became a nursing supervisor.

During World War II, the hospital formed a medical unit to serve the men and women in military service. She was asked to join the overseas unit and served in the U.S. Army Nursing Unit from 1942 until 1948. She served in the South Pacific. After returning to the United States, she was stationed at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pa., where she was promoted to major.

In 1948, she returned to the Women's Hospital of Philadelphia as supervisor. When the hospital closed, she worked for the city of Philadelphia in the medical department of the Juvenile Detention Center until her retirement.

Surviving are her daughter, Nila Fruchey of Ovid, Mich.; her sister, Mrs. Marion Felix of Fostoria, Ohio; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her friend, Dr. E. Cooper Bell of Lancaster.

Cauthen Funeral Home in Lancaster is in charge.

Eva Crosby

SHARON - Mrs. Eva Good Crosby, 82, of 4011 Sherer Road died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at the St. Luke #1 Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. A.A. Bankhead officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Crosby was a member of the St. Luke #1 Baptist Church and involved in many auxiliaries. She was also a member of the AP&B Society #18.

Surviving are her husband, Willie Crosby; her daughter Brenda Crosby of Darby; 10 sisters, Maggie Feemster of Rock Hill, Annie Boyd of Woodbridge Va., Cleona Mobley of Reston, Va., Elizabeth Gary of Stafford, Va., Essie Garvin, Virginia Ball, Lucille Easter and Hazel Sanders, all of Charlotte, and Margaret Wilks and Geneve Smith, both of Fort Mill; five brothers, Ager Good of Rock Hill, Wade Good of Gaston, N.C., Addison Good of Staten Island, N.Y., and Claude Wade and Gerona Good, both of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and at other times in the home.

Wright Funeral Home in York is in charge.

William Epps

FORT MILL - Mr. William H. "Ray" Epps, 73, of 1110 Kimbrell Road died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at home.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Flint Hill Baptist Church cemetery, with the Revs. Jeff Bedwell, Ralph Riley and Benny Wade officiating.

Mr. Epps was a member of First Baptist Church. He was retired from the state of South Carolina as an environmentalist. He served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9138, a past member of the American Legion, the Rock Hill Elks Lodge and the Catawba Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Billie Lowery Epps; two sons, Bratton D. "Tim" Epps of Lake Wylie and William H. Epps Jr. of Fort Mill; his daughter, Sandy Simril of Marietta, Ga.; his brother, Thomas "Pete" Epps of Fort Mill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday at First Baptist Church fellowship hall and at other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

John Jhant Jr.

CATAWBA - Mr. John Paul Jhant Jr., 80, of 211 Leisure Lane died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Camp Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating.

Mr. Jhant was retired from Bowaters International and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Lancaster.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Neely Jhant; two sons, Paul Tony Jhant of Icard, N.C., and William Richard Jhant of Rock Hill; his daughter, Theresa Jhant Bishop of Monticello, Ga.; two brothers, Max Jhant of Lancaster and David Jhant of Aiken; his sister, Marguerite Crown of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Camp Creek United Methodist Church, 4721 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
