Charlie Williams

COLUMBIA - Mr. Charlie G. Williams, 70, of Columbia died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at Lexington Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Eau Claire Baptist Church, with the Rev. Karl McCallister officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Great Falls.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Williams was South Carolina superintendent of education from 1979 to 1991. He earned his bachelor's degree from Newberry College and his master's degree and doctorate of philosophy from the University of South Carolina.

He was instrumental in planning and implementing the Education Improvement Act. He served as deputy superintendent for instruction for South Carolina, assistant superintendent for the Alabama State Department of Education, director of research at the S.C. Department of Education and a trustee emeritus at the University of South Carolina and The Citadel. He was teacher and coach at East Clarendon High School in Turbeville and was principal of Turbeville High School, McCants Elementary School, St. Andrews Elementary School and Logan Elementary School. He taught reading at Columbia College and Fort Jackson.

He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946 and 1951 to 1952.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Broome Williams; two sons, Charlie Williams of Anniston, Ala., and Frank Williams of Chapin; his brother, Samuel Williams of Clinton; his sister, Mabel "Sis" Williams of Great Falls; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.

Memorials made be made to the South Carolina Heart Fund, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260.

Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Jesse Owens

KERSHAW - Mr. Jesse Curtis Owens, 90, of 3501 Old Georgetown Road died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at the Oak Ridge Baptist Church, with the Revs. Charles Young and Mendel Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Owens was a native of Westville. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church and a retired farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Kathleen Barriett Owens; a son, the Rev. Bobby Owens of Kershaw; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Jerry and Deborah Anderson of 3489 Old Georgetown Road in Kershaw.

Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, is in charge.

Joseph Rufo

PAGELAND - Mr. Joseph Anthony Rufo, 46, of 314 W. Evans St., died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at the Lancaster Church of God, with the Rev. Lacy Jones officiating. Burial will be at the Kershaw City Cemetery.

A New York native, Mr. Rufo was a retired motorcycle mechanic.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Blackmon Rufo; three sons, Tony Rufo of Pageland, Jody Rufo of Lake Wylie and Joseph A. Rufo Jr. of Rock Hill; his mother, Geraldine Hartley Rufo of Lancaster and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the home of Geraldine Rufo, 2174 Dover Lane in Lancaster.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Sarah Scott

RICHBURG - Mrs. Sarah Louise Campbell Scott, 71, of 7140 Lyle Road died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Heath Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. Bill Evans and the Rev. Jim Leppard officiating. Burial will follow at Lando Cemetery.

Mrs. Scott was born in Chester County. She was retired from Springs Industries and worked as a substitute teacher in the Chester County school district. She was a lifetime member of Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and sang in the church choir. She was also the first baby christened at the church.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Clyde Scott Sr.; her son, Robert Clyde Scott Jr. of Columbia; three daughters, Lynn Friedman of Orlando, Fla., Sue Walthall of Charlotte, and Barbara Partin of Lugoff; two brothers, John Newt Campbell and James Earl Campbell of Richburg; her sister, Marybelle Campbell of Richburg; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at the Barron Funeral Home in Chester.

Memorials may be made to Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, 3781 Lando Road, Lando, S.C. 29724, or Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, S.C. 29730.

Andreal Adams Jr.

DETROIT - Mr. Andreal Adams Jr. of Detroit, formerly of Fort Mill, died Monday, June 1, 1998, in Detroit.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.

Surviving are three daughters, Frances Adams Hefney of Rock Hill, Mary A. Jones of Southfield, Mich., and Rose Mary Adams of Detroit.

Otis Harding

CHESTER - Mr. Otis L. Harding, 63, of 538 Christopher Lane died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Wright's Home for Funerals, with the Rev. Chris Snelgrove officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in in Great Falls.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Harding was a retired truck driver. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Great Falls. He was a charter member of the Chester Shrine Club and a member of the Armenia Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Dove Harding; three sons, Michael A. Harding, Wayne Pierce and Mike Martin, all of Chester; his daughter, Karen Young of Chester; three brothers, James A. Harding of Hartsville, Elmer E. Harding Jr. of Fort Lawn and David C. Harding of Atlanta; two sisters, Maude Robinson of Lancaster and Leslie J. Dabney of Columbia; and four grandchildren.

Willie Kennedy

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Willie "Waterboy" Kennedy, 90, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Winnsboro.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Paradise AME Zion Church in Great Falls, with the Rev. John E. Long officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Kennedy was a member of Paradise AME Zion Church and a retired employee of Duke Power Co.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Ruth Hampton Kennedy.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Washington Funeral Home in Great Falls.
