Mamie Gilliam

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mamie Woodard Gilliam of 53 Reynolds St. died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Woods officiating and the Rev. Ronal King assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gilliam was a native of Chester County. She attended York County public schools. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was mother and treasurer of the Usher Board, a member of the Missionaries, the Gospel Chorus, and the Women's Auxiliary. She was the treasurer of the Hagins/Fewell Street Neighborhood Community Watch Program.

Surviving are her son, Ronald B. Gilliam of Rock Hill; four daughters, Evelyn G. Hart, Thomasine Gilliam, Marilyn G. Burris and Althea G. Cunningham, all of Rock Hill; her brother, Tommy T. Douglas of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at home.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Marvin Hooks Sr.

YORK - Mr. Marvin Coolidge Hooks Sr., 73, of 2940 Chester Highway died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Revs. Johnny Tallent and Tom Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Hooks was a charter member of Woodhaven Baptist Church. He was the former owner of Hooks Body Shop and worked as a security guard at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte. A native of Whiteville, N.C., he served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of the Elks Club and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Mattie Tallent Hooks; his son, Marvin C. Hooks Jr. of Havelock, N.C.; his stepson, the Rev. Johnny Tallent of Xenia, Ohio; his daughter, Brenda Andreatos of Newport, N.C.; his stepdaughter, Henrietta Neely of Charlotte; two sisters, Margaret Collins of Cary, N.C., and Miriam Floyd of Ocean Isle, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to Woodhaven Baptist Church, 2062 Marett Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Virginia Leather

FORT MILL - Mrs. Virginia Sue Leather, 54, of 1524 Waterford Place died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Taylor officiating.

Mrs. Leather was a comptroller for L&S Technologies in Fort Mill.

Surviving are her husband, Brendan Leather; her daughter, Michelle Parsons of Denver; her parents, Virgil and Jessie Darnell Stamps of Brownsville, Texas; four brothers, Charles Stamps, Henry Stamps, Jerry Stamps and Richard Stamps, all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and her sister, Linda Shelly of Colorado Springs.

The family will receive friends following the service at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Mabel McClurkin

CHESTER - Mrs. Mable Meadows McClurkin, 82, of Chester Country Nursing Center, formerly of 106 Freedom Drive, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at the Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Old Hope Station Baptist Church in Fairfield County, with the Rev. David Rice officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. McClurkin was a member of Old Hope Station Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, missionary, member of the AP&B Society No. 31, and the CB&A Society. She was the widow of John Henry McClurkin Sr.

Surviving are her son, John Henry McClurkin Jr. of Chester; four daughters, Mary L. Thompson and Maggie E. Howze, both of Chester, Rosa L. Crosby of Greensboro, N.C., and Sarah McClurkin of Charlotte; two sisters, Pearl Feaster of Baltimore, and Gracie Coleman of Chester; four grandchildren whom she reared, Teresa Colvin and Shantay Sanders, both of Chester, Evett McClurkin of Union and Shannon Middleton of Virginia; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of James and Maggie Howze, 106 Freedom Drive.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

King's Funeral Home is in charge.

Mable Wells

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mable H. Wells, 71, of 782 E. Laney Terrace died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman McBeth Sr. officiating, the Right Rev. Joseph Johnson, the Revs. Robert Christian, Rolly Dawkins, David Scott, C.J. Jenkins and George McKain assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Wells was a member of Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church and a former member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church. She attended Washington, D.C., public schools and graduated from the Cortez Peters Business School of Washington. She retired from the Department of Social Services.

Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Z.B. Wells; two sons, Dennis H. Wells of Charlotte and Stanley C. Wells of Rock Hill; two daughters, Patricia W. Tolbert and Brenda W. Chisolm, both of Rock Hill; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.

Geneva Woodbury

LADSON - Mrs. Geneva Hucks Woodbury, 93, of Ladson died Monday, June 8, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel. Burial will be at Old Neck Cemetery.

Mrs. Woodbury was a member of Homewood Baptist Church in Conway. She was the widow of Robert Reese Woodbury.

Surviving are three sons, James L. Woodbury of Conway, Archie C. Woodbury of Hemingway and B. G. Woodbury of Ladson; four daughters, Esther Cooper of Conway, Rebecca Spires of Pelion, Brittie Hucks of Rock Hill and Virginia Bailey of Ladson; four brothers, Burgen Hucks of Hemingway; Sam Hucks, Herbert Hucks and Howard Hucks, all of Johnsonville; her sister, Duffie Bourne of Florence; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two step great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home.

Lee Coleman Jr.

YORK - Mr. Lee Craig Coleman Jr., 16, of 27 Railroad Ave. died Wednesday, June, 10, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Jones officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Coleman was a rising sophomore at York High School and was active with Rolling in Rock Hill. He was a native of South Williamston, Ky.

Surviving are his father, Lee Craig Coleman Sr. of McCarr, Ky.; his mother, Della Mae Coleman of York; his sister, Elizabeth Coleman Robertnet of Stopover, Ky.; and his maternal grandfather, Fonso May of New Town, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.
