Lamar Frenzel Bowen Sr

ROCK HILL - Lamar Frenzel Bowen Sr. was a jack of all trades - a photographer, a politician, a minister and longest of all, a barber.

Bowen, 85, died Monday, June, 8, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

For more than 30 years, Bowen operated City Barber Shop in Rock Hill. When he retired, his shop was located on Elk Street.

His first shop was on Black Street. "I lived at that barbershop, " said his daughter, Frances Miller.

She wasn't allowed be home alone after school, so she went to the barbershop and stayed until her father closed for the day. "I was the cashier, the cleaner-upper, the all-around errand girl. The only job I ever refused to do was cut hair."

Bowen taught five of his six children the trade. Elvin was the only one who didn't learn. "But I always practiced on him. Elvin got a lot of hair cuts, " Lamar Bowen Jr. said.

His youngest son, Holmsie, practically paid his way through college with the money he earned barbering at the shop with his father. "He taught me, and I was a registered barber by the time I was 18."

Bowen ran for a Rock Hill City Council seat twice in the 1970s but lost. "He loved Rock Hill and always thought there was something else he could do, " Miller said. In 1989, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Rock Hill school board.

On Jan. 9, 1983, he was ordained as a minister and he served on the Ministerial Board at Trinity Baptist Church, where he also was a member. He was co-owner of Bowen Photography.

The accomplishment he was most proud of, Miller said, was getting his high school equivalency diploma. He was in his early 70s at the time. At the same time, he was attending a reading tutoring program to learn to read better.

"I could read the newspaper some, but I was called into the ministry in 1983 and I wanted to read better so I could read the Bible and study it better, " Bowen said in a story published in The Herald in 1985.

He was a member of the Sterling Elks Lodge No. 344 and the State Barber Association.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. C. Sanders officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Surviving are five sons, James F. Bowen of Hayward, Calif., Lamar F. Bowen Jr. of Abilene, Texas, Elvin S. Bowen of Rock Hill, Charles L. Bowen of Severn, Md., and Holmsee L. Bowen of Bloomfield, Conn.; his daughter, Frances B. Miller of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; his brother, James Franklin Bowen of San Francisco; his sister, Cecelia Lindsay of Everette, Wash; and several grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in York. The family will receive friends at the home, 508 Hampton St., Rock Hill.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.
