Johnny Durham

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Johnny Frank Durham of 1926 Kingston Drive died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at New Hope United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating and the Revs. David Dunlap and John Cathcart assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Durham was a native of York County. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, its church aid society, the United Methodist Men's organization and was a former member of the finance committee. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Walls of Rock Hill, Juanita D. Meeks and Karen D. Hughes, both of Gastonia; and his brother, Robert Durham of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the home of Robert Durham, 1752 Ogden Road, Rock Hill.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Ray Jimison

GASTONIA, N.C. - Ray Jimison never met a stranger, and he always had a story to tell.

Jimison, former general manager of Carolina Newspapers, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center. He was 67.

Paula Greiner, director of the Greater York Chamber of Commerce, remembers Jimison's stories. "There were always words of wisdom in his stories, " she said.

"He was very professional to work with, " Greiner added. "He always tried to make it a win-win situation."

Jimison began his career as a reporter with the Gastonia Gazette in 1958. When his son, Jon, was born in the late 1960s, Ray was managing editor of the paper. The younger Jimison is now managing editor of the same paper, now called the Gaston Gazette.

"Dad was always so proud, " his son said. "The year I was born, he was managing editor, and today I'm managing editor.

"He called me from his hospital bed to give me a news tip. I have really leaned on him, " he said. "He could really guide me."

Gene Graham, editor of the Yorkville Enquirer, worked with Jimison from 1990 to 1996, while Jimison was with Carolina Newspapers, the parent organization of The Clover Herald and the Yorkville Enquirer, owned by McClatchy Newspapers Inc. of Sacramento, Calif. McClatchy also owns The Herald.

"I learned a lot from him. He was extremely professional, " Graham said.

"He was one of the most energetic people I knew. We could hardly keep up with him, " Graham said.

Following his career with the Gastonia newspaper, Jimison worked for Ti-Caro Inc. from 1969 to 1990 where he was assistant vice president, director of public relations and editor of the company newspaper.

Jimison was a member of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute and twice chaired the Textile Week Committee. He was a member of the North Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association and chaired Textile Committee Week.

He was a member of the Gastonia A.M. Optimist Club, Carolina Association of Business Communicators, Charlotte Textile Club, Charlotte Public Relations Society, the Clover Rotary Club, and Greater York Chamber of Commerce. He was a past director of the Gastonia Jaycees. He was president of the Gaston County Art and History Museum from 1986 to 1988.

Jimison served on the boards of Gaston County Cancer Society, Gaston County Heart Association, Family Counseling Center, Myers Center at Gaston College and Gaston Children's Center.

He attended Belmont Abbey College and graduated from Gardner-Webb College.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at East Baptist Church, with the Revs. Robert Winecoff and Thomas Hogan officiating. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Wellman Jimison; three sons, Jeff Jimison and Jon Jimison of Gastonia, and Gregory Jimison of the home; his daughter, Kimberly J. Carter of Gastonia; three sisters, Jewel Parker, Hilda Weaver and Joyce Elmore Hogan, all of Gastonia; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia.

Earl Jordan

ROCK HILL - Mr. Earl Jordan, 69, of 2506 Celanese Road died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at West End Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mike Lowery and Larry Gregory officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Jordan retired from Suburban Propane after 24 years. He was a member of West End Baptist Church for more than 40 years, where he was active in the prison ministry, and was a Sunday school teacher, deacon and chairman of the pastor search committee.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Denton Jordan; his daughter, Debbie Ghent of Rock Hill; his step daughter, Donna S. Patterson of Fort Mill; three step sons, Samuel E. Smith of Rock Hill, Ben M. Smith III of Chicago and Tony M. Denton of Edgewater, Fla.; three brothers, Willard Jordan, Fred Jordan and Bill Jordan, all of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and his step great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the West End Baptist Church building fund, 1727 McConnells Highway, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Carol Mahaffey Sr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Carol Lloyd Mahaffey Sr., 69, of Charlotte died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Mercy Hospital South.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Marty McCarthy officiating.

Mr. Mahaffey was a native of Lancaster County, S.C. He graduated from Kings Business College. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked at Delmar Studios and was co-founder of PCA International, a retail color photography business.

He was a member of Carmel Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple. As a Shriner, he received the the Walt Disney-designed Recognition Award for Outstanding Service to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Dunlap Mahaffey; three sons, Carol Lloyd Mahaffey Jr. of Saratoga, Calif., Charles Douglas Mahaffey of Charlotte and William Joseph Dunlap Mahaffey of Pineville; two daughters, Barbara Mahaffey Tindall of Raleigh, and Jane Mahaffey McInnis of Mint Hill; four brothers, George Frank Mahaffey of Greenville, Jack Lee Mahaffey of Rock Hill, Thomas Glenn Mahaffey of Asheville and William Moody Mahaffey of Lancaster, S.C.

The family will receive friends in the church foyer after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 200 Centreport Drive, Greensboro, NC 27409 or St. John's Episcopal Church building fund, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.

Fred Parris Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Fred R. Parris Sr., 80, of 1101 Chandler Drive died Sunday, June, 14, 1998, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

Mr. Parris was the widower of Irene Williams Parris.

Surviving are six sons, Leroy Parris of Chesnee, Fred R. Parris Jr., Carl L. Parris, Buddy Lee Parris, and Bobbie Joe Parris, all of Rock Hill, and Jackie R. Parris of Stantonville, Tenn.; four daughters, Wyvonia Parris of Chesnee, and Diane Corder, Nona Hines and Janice Bell, all of Rock Hill; two sisters, Ruby Burke and Lula Reynolds, both of Chesnee; 32 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Mable Wheeler

CHARLOTTE - Ms. Mable Wheeler, 65, of 1000 Baxter St. died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Parker Funeral Home in Rock Hill.

Christene Wilson

CLOVER - Mrs. Christene Ross Wilson, 64, of 1298 Bowling Green Drive died Monday, June, 15, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at M.L. Ford & Sons, with the Rev. Charles Poore officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, William F. Wilson; three sons, Barry L. Wilson and James T. Wilson, both of Clover, and Randy P. Wilson of Fairbanks, Alaska; her brother, James A. Ross of Trenton, Ohio; her sister, Irene Wuzzard of Brodenton, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.
