George Lee

FORT MILL - Mr. George Elston Lee, 74, of 115 David Court died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Living Vine Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Ben Byrd and Pastor Mike Oney officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Tyler Hill Cemetery in Susquehanna, Pa.

Mr. Lee was a graduate of Syracuse University and was retired from the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a soil conservationist in New York, where he was a master gardener.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war, interned in Czechoslovakia. He was a member of the Living Vine Assembly of God Church and the Senior Citizens at Leroy Springs.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Helen Bower Lee of Fort Mill; his son, William Scott Lee of Plano, Texas; three daughters, Nancy Marie Paul of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Diane Melissa Lee of Haverstraw, N.Y., and Sharon Virginia Oney of Raleigh, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Memorials may be made to the Living Vine Assembly of God Church Building Fund, 2001 Doby's Bridge Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715 or to the Hospice of York County, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Jane Poovey

LANCASTER - Mrs. Jane Buie Poovey of 305 N. White Street died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Steve Morgan and Frank Lybrand officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Poovey was the retired office manager for Art's Engraving Co. in Charlotte. She was the widow of Roscoe Spray Poovey.

Surviving are her son, John Marcellous Poovey of Lancaster; her daughter, Jane Elizabeth Poovey of Lancaster; her sister, Mrs. Jack Forrester of Houston; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to Epworth Children's Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250.

Alta Threatt

LANCASTER - Mrs. Alta Lloyd Threatt, 90, of 3827 Pageland Highway died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hopewell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodney K. Powell officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Threatt was a homemaker, a seamstress, and the oldest member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son, Joe Threatt of Lancaster; two daughters, Linda Lingle and Dianne Evans, both of Lancaster; two brothers, Julius Lloyd of Lancaster and George Lloyd of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and in the fellowship hall after the service.

Memorials may be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, 3724 Heyward Hough Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Maude Black

CHESTER - Mrs. Maude Castles Thompson Black, 83, of 2552 Majors Drive died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Chester Country Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.

Mrs. Black, a graduate of Chester High School, was retired from Springs Industries. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Major L. Thompson Sr.

Surviving are her son, Major L. Thompson Jr. of Chester; her sister, Maggie McCanless of Mobile, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 158, Chester, SC 29706.

Iver Catoe

LANCASTER - Mrs. Iver Virginia Hunter Catoe, 71, of 703 Sumter St. died Friday, June 19, 1998, at The Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God of Prophecy, with the Rev. Ted Tinker officiating. Burial will be at the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, she was retired from Springs Industries. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are her husband, Warren "Bake" Catoe; two daughters, Jane Kennington and Barbara Dabbs, both of Lancaster; five brothers, Wade Hunter of Great Falls, Ruben Hunter of Kershaw and Conway Hunter, Jerry Hunter and Jesse Hunter, all of Lancaster; her sister, Lillie Mae Owens of Camden; her half-sister, Brenda Ann Laney of Lancaster; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Jennie Leaphart

LANCASTER - Mrs. Jennie Shirley Leaphart, 80, of Helms Gordon Residential Care Center died Friday, June 19, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Curtis Cameron and Bert Welch officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Leaphart was a retired self-employed hairdresser and member of Temple Baptist Church. She was the widow of J.C. Leaphart.

Surviving are her son, Robert E. Leaphart of Lancaster; two bothers, John Shirley of Lancaster and Paul Shirley of Columbia; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, Robert Leaphart, 1126 Meadow Drive, Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 1214 Old Landsford Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Virginia Harris

LANCASTER - Mrs. Virginia Ritchie Harris, 81, formerly of Kershaw Street, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Reformation Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Karl Burnsdorf officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Harris was a retired employee of Springs Industries and a charter member of Reformation Lutheran Church. She was the widow of Arnold A. Harris.

Surviving are her son, Tracy Harris Sr. of Orange Park, Fla.; three daughters, Patsy H. Dabney, Jean Harris Snipes and Peggy Adams, all of Lancaster; five sisters, Helen Gibson and Frances Fuller, both of Lady Lake, Fla., Faye Smith of Charlotte, Margaret Kluttz of Concord, N.C., and Ethel Ogburn of Orlando, Fla.; her brother, Buford E. Ritchie of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her step-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.
