Essie Courtney

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Essie J. Simpson Courtney, 82, of Charlotte died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bass Funeral Home in Rock Hill, with the Revs. Randy Sherrill and James Gable officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

A native of York County, Mrs. Courtney was the widow of J. Frank Courtney. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for about 45 years.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Youngblood of Rock Hill; two sons, John Frank Courtney Jr. and Thomas Hardin Courtney, both of Charlotte; her brother, Frank Hardin Simpson Jr. of California; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Patricia Youngblood, 2012 Country Court, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2830 Dorchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28209.

Lola Dease

GREAT FALLS - Miss Lola Elizabeth Dease, 92, of 39 Canal St. died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mahaffey Funeral Home in Lancaster, with the Rev. Charles Bradley officiating.

A native of Kershaw, Miss Dease was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and attended Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home, 201 N. Catawba St., Lancaster and at other times at the home of her niece, Ruth Hinson, 512 Feemster Lane, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ida Ervin

AUSTIN, Texas - Ms. Ida Lee Ervin, formerly of Chester, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the North Austin Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. Ricky Daniels officiating and the Revs. Charles Pratt, Keith Taylor, E.E. Vance and Carl Glenn assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Ms. Ervin was educated in the Chester County public schools. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Gilbert Ervin of Chester; three daughters, Iris E. Davis of Round Rock, Texas, with whom she lived, Virginia A. Ervin of Chester and Earline Ervin of Charlotte; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is from 1 to 9 tonight at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Virginia Ervin, 2678 Dawson Drive, Apt. 113, Chester.

Leroy Ferguson

YORK - Mr. Leroy Hafner "Roy" Ferguson, 75, of 852 Mason Dickson Road died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Dr. James McGill and the Rev. Bob Sprinkle officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Ferguson was a retired self-employed electrician and a member of Temple Presbyterian Church in America in York. He repaired and restored antique clocks.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Burgess Ferguson; three daughters, Jean Ferguson Watts of Belmont, N.C., Christine "Teenie" Ferguson Sexton of Clover and Agnes "Aggie" Ferguson Mackey of York; two brothers, the Rev. Charles O. Ferguson of Greenville and Holmes Roberts of Hickory Grove; his sister, Margie Roberts Brown of York; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Temple Presbyterian Church in America building fund, P.O. Box 733, York SC 29745.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Fanny McClure

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Fanny Reid Quackenbush McClure, 88, of 1330 India Hook Road died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Westminster Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Ehlers officiating. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, N.C.

Mrs. McClure was a beautician and an avid bridge player. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. She lived in Alamance County for 80 years and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. She was the widow of Harry E. "Doc" McClure.

Surviving are three sisters, Helen Q. Benson of Rock Hill, Joy Q. Kimbrell of Charlotte and Louise Q. O'Connell of Pottersville, N.Y.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Young Life of York County, P.O. Box 4848, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Rosie Rainey

CHESTER - Mrs. Rosie L. Howze Rainey, 67, of 1432 McMillar-Howze Drive died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rehoboth AME Zion Church, with the Rev. W.H. Woods Jr. officiating and the Rev. Ronnie Baxter assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Rainey was a member of Rehoboth AME Zion Church and Greater Abyssinian Baptist Church in Newark, where she was a nurse's aide and a member of the Willing Workers Club. She was an assembler for an ink company in Hillside and Union, N.J. She attended Chester County public schools.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Rainey; two daughters, Essie Nelson of Atlanta and Alberta "Bob" Hughes of Irvington, N.J.; her stepdaughter, Cathy Hillson of Orange, N.J.; her mother, Annie Howze McMillar of Chester; two brothers, George Watts Jr. of Hackettstown, N.J., and Jesse J. Watts of East Orange, N.J.; her sister, Annie Mae Williams of Philadelphia; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Rehoboth AME Zion Church and at other times at home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 tonight at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

Albert Baker

RED SPRINGS, N.C. - Mr. Albert Belk Baker, 73, of 205 North College St. died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Crumpler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Oulton officiating. Burial will be at Alloway Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Baker was a certified public accountant with A.K. Lovin and Co. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He served as a pilot in World War II and was a member of Red Springs Masonic Lodge No. 501.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Baker and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Crumpler Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 204 East Third Ave., Red Springs, NC 28377.
