Grace Burns

SIMPSONVILLE - Mrs. Grace Hughes Burns, 69, of Summit Place, formerly of Mauldin, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mauldin United Methodist Church. Entombment will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Burns was a homemaker and the widow of Allen Eric Burns. She was a member of Mauldin United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Ramsey of Piedmont, Jane Parrish of Rock Hill and Betty Bennefield of Taylors; two sons, Bill Burns of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ed Burns of Fountain Inn; two sisters, Clara Cooke of Aiken and Agnes Lowman of Forest City, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville.

Ida Ervin

AUSTIN, Texas - Ms. Ida Lee Ervin, formerly of Chester, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the North Austin Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Virginia Ervin, 2678 Dawson Drive, Apt. 113, Chester.

Donna Helton

FORT MILL - Donna Lynn Shropshire Helton, 44, of 3230 Horseshoe Trail died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at Fort Mill High School, with the Rev. Chuck Huskins officiating.

A native of Spartanburg, Mrs. Helton was a graduate of Dorman High School, the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, and Winthrop University. She was a teacher and coach at Fort Mill High School. She was elected 1997 Teacher of the Year, 1996 and 1998 Region Coach of the Year and 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 Herald All-Area Coach of the Year. She was a charter member of Church on the Rock.

Surviving are her husband, Douglas W. Helton; her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Livington of Spartanburg; two brothers, Bobby Shropshire of Garden City and Tony Shropshire of Fort Mill; and her maternal grandmother, Beatrice Norton of Spartanburg.

Memorials may be made to the Coach Donna Helton Scholarship c/o Fort Mill School District, 120 E. Elliott St., Fort Mill SC 29715.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.

Julian Hunter Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Julian Hunter Sr., 68, of 3165 Lancewood Drive died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Lancaster Memorial Park, by his daughter, Juliann Peach.

Mr. Hunter was a carpenter in the construction industry.

Surviving are his son, Marvin Julian Hunter Jr. of York; his daughter, Juliann Hunter Peach of Lancaster; three sisters, Mary Sistare of Lancaster, Juanita Taylor of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Carrie Wren Styles of Travelers Rest; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to HomeCare Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Edward Hyman

ROCK HILL - Mr. Edward Hyman, 76, of 247 Blanche Circle died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jessie Boulware officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Hyman was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School. He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Davis Hyman; six daughters, Jackie Davis, Mary Davis, Janice Durham, Dianne Smith, Dorothy Davis and Janice Perry, all of Rock Hill; two sons, Alexander Edwards and Bernard Burris, both of Rock Hill; two brothers, Joe D. Hyman of Washington, D.C., and Dan Lloyd Hyman of New York; his sister, Edith Hyman of Rock Hill; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home.

Uriah McManus Jr.

LANCASTER - The Rev. Uriah Alonzoe McManus, Jr., 73, of 2553 Cimmeron Road died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Lancaster, with the Revs. Bert Welch, Warren Johnson, Bobby Bailey and Morris Hollifield officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, he graduated from Lancaster High School in 1941 and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina. He earned his bachelor of divinity and master of theology degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, N.C. He received his doctor of ministry degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and with the Army 774th tank battalion during World War II. He was an accountant with the IRS before his call to the ministry, which spanned more than 45 years.

He served as pastor of six churches, director of development for Gardner Webb University, Associational Missionary in North and South Carolina, director of Deferred Giving and later president of the Baptist Foundation of Alabama.

He retired in 1988 and returned to Lancaster, where he was interim pastor for six area churches. He served as consultant to the Baptist Foundation of Alaska.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Thomas McManus; his son, James A. McManus of Garner, N.C.; five daughters, Linda M. Stevens of Chino Hills, Calif., Sherry M. Cochran of Raleigh, N.C., Caroline M. Jones of Mocksville, N.C., Margaret M. Herod of Orlando, Fla., and Amy M. Stackhouse of Deatsville, Ala.; two brothers, Clyde McManus of Murrells Inlet and John McManus of Lancaster; three sisters, Bonnie Creel and Sandra Deese, both of Rayle, Ga., and Dianne Monaghan of Coral Springs, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Covenant Baptist Church, P.O. Box 578, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Helen Mills

GASTONIA, N.C. - Ms. Helen Inman Mills, 79, of 632 Seapark Circle died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Steve Hogg officiating.

Ms. Mills was retired from the textile industry.

Surviving are two nephews, Robert L. "Whitey" Adams and Brent E. Adams, both of Rock Hill; two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.
