Edward Elam

WASHINGTON - Mr. Edward Elam, 85, of Maryland, formerly of Chester, died Friday, August 21, 1998, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home in Chester.

Elizabeth Ephland

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. Elizabeth Pamplin Ephland, 88, of 494 Parkview Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at her daughter's home in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, with Dr. Charles Williams and Rev. Genie Martin officiating. Burial will be at Alamance Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ephland was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington. She was a life member of the Women of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Nancy Oliver of Rock Hill; her brother, Walter Lewis Pamplin of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence from 6 to 8 tonight.

Daniel Huckeba Sr.

YORK - Mr. Daniel Cleveland Huckeba Sr., 65, of 212 Kenny Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at the Rock Hill Medical Center.

The graveside service and burial will be private.

A native of Calhoun County, Ala., Mr. Huckeba was a truck driver for Salem Carriers and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Ann Allen Huckeba; two sons, Daniel C. Huckeba Jr, of Charlotte and Wesley H. Huckeba of York; two daughters, Dana H. Williams of China Grove, N.C., and Sonya H. Hare of Charlotte; his brother Dall Huckeba Jr. of Mount Holly, N.C.; seven grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the Southside Chapel in Gaston, N.C., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to York County Meals on Wheels.

Greene Funeral Service, Inc. of Gaston, N.C., is in charge.

Beatrice Singletary

CHESTER - Mrs. Beatrice M. Singletary, 98, of 2624 Loving Circle died Saturday, August 22, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home.

Carol Thomas

CHESTER - Mrs. Carol Ann Fender Thomas, 50, of 1287 Oak Hill Road died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at the Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Gregg Keller officiating. Burial will be at the Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Thomas was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. She was retired from the South Carolina Department of Health.

Surviving are her husband, Alvin "Shorty" Thomas; two sons, George "Jody" Thomas and Jason D. Thomas, both of Chester; her daughter, Lisa A. Thomas of Chester; her parents, George and Love Fender of Chester; and three sisters, Brenda F. Baker and Martha F. Johnson, both of Chester, and Nancy F. Forlaw of Meridian, Miss.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to The First Church of the Nazarene, 182 Pinckney St., Chester, SC 29706.

Mattie Bennett

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mattie J. Bennett, 88, of 261 S. Herlong Ave. died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Beverly Health Care.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

A native of Chesterfield, Mrs. Bennett was a retiree of Highland Park Mills. She was a charter member of Eastside Baptist Church and one of the 14 original Woman's Missionary Union members. She was the widow of Arthur Y. Bennett.

Surviving are her son, William F. James of Gates County, N.C.; her granddaughter, who was her caregiver, Alice Pittman; her great-grandchild; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Alice Pittman, 4943 Mount Gallant Road.

Louise Fowler

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Louise Coleman Fowler, 82, of Magnolia Manor died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Greene Funeral Home.
