Frances Atkinson

CHESTER - Mrs. Frances Collins Atkinson, 91, of 107 Pine St. died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Clay Waldrip and Booker E. Bagbey officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Atkinson was a retired elementary school teacher and taught many years at Dora Jones Gayle Elementary School. She was a graduate of Chester High School. She attended Bernau College in Georgia and graduated from Converse College. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was the widow of Walker M. Atkinson Sr.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Daniels of Chester; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box. 518, Chester, SC 9706.

Yvonne Auten

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Eleanor Yvonne Sauls Auten, 62, of 1137 Cedar Grove Lane died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Jesse Sims officiating and the Rev. Dr. Ronald Kelley assisting. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Auten was retired from Auten Exterminating Co., and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Grace Church of the Nazarene. She was the widow of Robert L. Sauls.

Surviving are her husband, Ottis Maynard Auten of the home; her son, Ricky D. Sauls of Rock Hill; three daughters, Dale Sauls of Columbia, Tiny Dufour of Aberdeen, N.J., and Robin Gail Au of Rock Hill; her mother, Shirley Moore and stepfather, Ernest Moore, both of Rock Hill; three brothers, Billy Craig James, Junior Ray James and Robert Lee James, all of Rock Hill; her sister, Priscilla Ann Broome of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Grace Church of the Nazarene building fund, 1029 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

William Broome

LANCASTER - The Rev. William Howard Broome, 77, of 863 Hampton Grace Ave. died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Revs. Charles Hendricks and Eddie Usher officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kannapolis, N.C., the Rev. Broome was a retired Free Will Baptist minister and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was the widower of Frances Melton Broome.

Surviving are two grandchildren raised in the home, Sylvia Hinson and Sherry Alford, both of Lancaster; his sister, Vada Bridges of Clinton; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Holiness Church Missionary Fund, 1138 10th St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Luther Crawley

CHESTER - Mr. Luther Crawley, 80, of 135 Woodland Drive died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ruby Baptist Church in Ruby, with the Revs. Ralph Jacobs, Russell Parsons and Don Rhyne officiating. Burial will be at Ruby Cemetery.

A native of Ruby, Mr. Crawley was retired postmaster of the Ruby post office. He was a lifelong member of Ruby Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Ruby High School and Coynes's Electrical School in Chicago. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 0134. He was the widower of Lucille Smith Crawley.

Surviving are his wife, Eloise Boney Nichols Crawley; two sisters, Dr. Ina Sylvia Crawley of Atlanta and Elizabeth Honeycutt of Charleston; two stepdaughters, Hazel Alexander and Nell Jones, both of Chester; and two step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Miller-Rivers Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield.

James Hefley

EDGEMOOR - Mr. James "Snake" Hefley, 95, of 3450 Mount Holly Road died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Big Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rodney Adams officiating, the Rev. Dr. J.W. Threatt delivering the eulogy and the Rev. J. D. McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Hefley was a member of Big Calvary Baptist Church, where he was the oldest member of the church and was a deacon, church treasurer, church historian and Hymn Choir marshal. He was a member of Archive Masonic Lodge No. 149 and AB&P Society No. 18 and was retired from Gold Tex Mills.

He was the widower of Mozelle McCray Hefley.

Surviving are four sons, James R. Hefley and Leroy Hefley, both of Washington, Paul A. Hefley of Forestville, Md., and David L. Hefley of the home; four daughters, Martha R. Caldwell and Betty H. Jackson, both of Washington, Margaret H. Dickson of Charlotte and Catherine H. Simpson of Rock Hill; his adopted son, Joe L. Neely of Rock Hill; two adopted daughters, Constance Spriggs of Washington and Edith Darby of York; his sister, Ellaree Heath of Rock Hill; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two adopted grandchildren whom he reared, Deborah A. Dunham and Jerry Dunham, both of Edgemoor.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight with Masonic rites at Big Calvary Baptist Church in Lando.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., is in charge.

Jason James

KERSHAW - Mr. Jason Eugene James, 20, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Byerly Hospital in Hartsville.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Donald W. Deese and Jerry Catledge officiating.

Surviving are his parents, Frank W. and Diane Ivey James of Kershaw; his sister, Kathy Langley of Heath Springs; and his maternal grandparents, Wade and Ruth Ivey of Kershaw.

Mr. James will be taken to the home of his grandparents, Wade and Ruth Ivey, 4736 Mount Pisgah Highway, on Thursday and will remain there until the service.

Memorials may be made to the Saleevy Development Center, 714 Lewellen Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Lola McCarty

MYRTLE BEACH - Mrs. Lola Pankey McCarty, 84, of Myrtle Beach, formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Patrick, Mrs. McCarty was a homemaker and member of Trinity Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach. She was a former member of St. John's United Methodist in Rock Hill. She was the widow of Philip Samuel McCarty.

Surviving are her son, Dennis McCarty of Pompano Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Phyllis M. Jones of North Myrtle Beach; five sisters, Julia Seymour of Darlington, Nita Griggs of Patrick, Sue Broach and Jackie Clark, both of Columbia, and Alisia Gregory of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Bass Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad.
