Claude Love Moore Sr.

Claude Love Moore Sr., the great-grandson of Rock Hill's founding father, died Tuesday at the age of 87.

"He was a highly respected cotton merchant who followed a long family history of merchandising cotton, " said Claude Moore Jr., city executive and vice-president of Carolina First Bank. "In his retirement years, he was a devoted father, grandfather and loving husband."

Moore retired from Williams Cotton Co., owned by his father-in-law, E. Leslie Williams, in 1978. But his local heritage goes back much further, to before the Revolutionary War, in which Moore's great-great-grandfather fought, Moore Jr. said.

In 1851, Moore's great-grandfather, Alexander Templeton Black, donated 4.5 acres of his land to the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad.

The township of Ebenezerville didn't want the railroad coming through their community. But Black saw the deal's potential and donated the land for a depot and gave right-of-way for the tracks, Moore Jr. said.

Black, who owned three plantations on 448.5 acres, then hired Squire John Roddey to survey his land and establish Rock Hill's boundaries. He also donated land to the First Presbyterian Church and Methodist Church, Moore Jr. said.

"The railroad went through his property, " he said. "And the town grew around the railroad."

Roddey's survey shows 23 lots along one street, named Main Street, with a southern and northern alley. The road bordering Black's home became Black Street, said local historian Louise Pettus.

The town and its name became official when the post office opened in April 1852, Pettus said.

A granite marker, located on Main Street, recognizes Black's contribution.

Like his great-great-grandfather, Moore Sr. also went to war. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific while on the U.S.S. Shipley Bay, Moore Jr. said.

Another of Moore Sr.'s sons, Leslie Moore, continues the family tradition as owner of Moore Cotton Co.

Moore Sr. also was a member of the Rock Hill Rotary Club and Rock Hill Elks Lodge. Other surviving family members include four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Neely's Creek ARP Church cemetery. A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. William Pender officiating.

His family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at the home of Leslie W. Moore, 375 Bromley Road, Heathwood Forest, Rock Hill.
