Dennis Williams

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Dennis Lee "Pup" Williams, 30, of 1040 Delmar Lane, formerly of Richburg, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church in Richburg, with the Rev. Leroy Ellison officiating and Ministers Thomas Chesley and Tony White assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams was a member of Mount Ararat AME Zion Church. He was employed at Northern Tool and Equipment Co. in Charlotte and was a 1988 graduate of Lewisville High School and a member of the Bascomville Bible study group.

Surviving are his wife, Robyn Neal Williams; his son, Dennis Williams Jr. of Lancaster; his daughter, Dominque Williams of Lancaster; two stepsons, Jeremy Neal of Charlotte and Chunquavius Cauthen of Lancaster; two stepdaughters, Montisha Nesbitt and Chuntavia Neal, both of Charlotte; his mother, Flossie Williams Chesley and stepfather, Minister Thomas Chesley, both of Richburg; seven brothers, James Michael Williams of Lancaster, Kelvin Williams of Hawaii, Bertram Brown and Malcolm Brown, both of Richburg, and Bernard Curry, Rico White and Timothy Barber, all of Great Falls; five sisters, Tymeria Williams of Lancaster, Nekita Williams of Richburg, Rachel B. Burgess of Indian Trail, N.C., Soyini Grafton of Fort Lawn and Sigredda Young Smith of Chester; and his step-grandmother, Mary Chesley of Richburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., and at other times at the home of Leola Hill, 4476 Hunter Road, Richburg.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Carl Bergman

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. Carl A. Bergman, 82, of 26 Hamilton's Ferry Road died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. Russ Brown officiating.

Mr. Bergman was associated with GAF Corp. for 32 years and was also with Hoechst Corp. He later served as a consultant for Catawba-Charlabs Inc. in Charlotte. Mr. Bergman was a member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. He studied textile chemistry at Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Polytech in New York. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Bergman was a charter member of the River Hills Country Club and a member of River Hills Community Church.

Surviving are his wife, Fay Stewart Bergman; his son, Carl Stewart Bergman of Concord, N.C.; his daughter, Carin Strayer of Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Claire Mombert of North Arlington, N.J., and Carin Korba of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren; and his step-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Thomas Center Jr.

WINNSBORO - Mr. Thomas Marion Center Jr., 75, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel ARP Church cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Clyde McCants officiating.

Mr. Center was a retired rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of Bethel ARP Church.

Surviving are his wife, LaVerne Geddings Center; two daughters, Jerry Ghantt of Rock Hill and Miriam Sprott of Winnsboro; three sisters, Marion C. Brooks, Mary Lee C. Rhinehardt and Miriam C. Cooper, all of Winnsboro; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Pope Funeral Home.

Dorothy Martin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Deas Martin of 4022 Firethorn Lane died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at her home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Drs. Shelton P. Sanford III and William A. Fox Jr. officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Martin was the owner of Newcomers. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and active in prison ministry.

Surviving are her husband, Hugh Wilson Martin; her son, Bruce Michael Burke of Greenville; and her parents, Richard and Louise Deas of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

James Ogden

YORK - Mr. James McDowell Ogden, 68, of Jordan Drive died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 am. Tuesday at Robert Snyder Funeral Home, 327 Easton Road, Riegelsville, Pa. Burial will be at Raubsville, Pa., cemetery.

Mr. Ogden was a retired steel worker and was employed by Tubular Steel Co. in Sauderton, Pa. He was a member of York Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Pamela Lamb Ogden; three sons, James Barry Ogden of Quakertown, Pa., Randall Ogden of Telford, Pa., and Donald Richard Ogden of York; three daughters, Sharon M. Swartley of Quakertown, Pa., Kathryn M. DiStefano of Phoenixville, Pa., and Rebecca M. Ogden of York; his stepson, Kevin Mitchell of York; two stepdaughters, Karen Mitchell and Kelly Mitchell Williamson, both of Rock Hill; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the York Church of God building fund, P.O. Box 667, York, SC 29745.

Don Ryder

FORT MILL - Mr. Don E. Ryder, 82, of Fort Mill died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at his home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Dr. Walter Clark officiating.

A native of Chardon, Ohio, Mr. Ryder was a member of First Assembly of God in Fort Mill. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Pacific. He was a graduate of Rutgers University and a math and science teacher at Private Nicholas Minue School in Carteret, N.J. He was president of the East Brunswick chess club.

Surviving are his wife, Olga "Ollie" S. Ryder; his daughter, Carolyn Kinelski of Atlanta; and his brother, John S. Ryder of Nashville, Tenn.

Lowe-DeBord Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Road, Charlotte, is in charge.

Frances Spain

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. - Mrs. Frances McPherson Lander Spain, formerly of Rock Hill, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y.

A private interment will be in the columnbarium at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Schenectady, N.Y.

A native of Florida, Mrs. Spain was a 1925 graduate of Winthrop College. She earned a bachelor's degree in library science at Emory University and her master's and doctorate degrees at the University of Chicago.

She founded the library science department at Winthrop and later was assistant head of the graduate library school at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She was supervisor of children's services for the New York Public Library, where she was editor of Books for Young People and for the Saturday Review of Literature. She was a visiting lecturer at Columbia University, Syracuse University, Pratt Institute and Rutgers University. She was elected president of the American Library Association in 1960-61, the first children's librarian to be chosen for the position. She was listed in Who's Who and named Woman of the Year in Library Science by editors of Who's Who of American Women. She helped found a master's degree program in librarianship at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand under the auspices of a Fulbright grant and Rockefeller Foundation fellowship.

After retirement, she was director of library science at Central Florida Junior College in Ocala, Fla.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Spain Dobbins of Niskayuna, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the endowment fund of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1935 The Plaza, Schenectady, NY 12309 or to Ellis Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1015, Schenectady, NY 12301-1015.
