Dewey Coates

KERSHAW - Mr. Dewey Rogers Coates, 82, of 209 Minor St. died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bryant D. Fersner Jr. officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at the Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Coates was a retired air conditioning foreman for Springs Industries. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1940 to 1946, a member of the Stafford Graham American Legion Post #31 and the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Coates was a member of the Masons for more than 60 years. He was raised a Master Mason in Flat Rock Lodge No. 378 and later served as High Priest of the Hart Chapter No. 59 in Kershaw.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Ballard Coates; two sons, W. Douglas Coates of Cayce and James Eric "Jimmy" Coates of Lexington; and three granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067 or to the charity of one's choice.

James Davis

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Collin Davis, 77, of 1346 Flint Street died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church in Catawba, with the Rev. Alan Stewart officiating and the Rev. W. W. Thompson and Elder Elvis Morgan assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Davis was a retired truck driver for Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. He attended Chester County public schools and was the widower of Willie Eva Davis.

Surviving are two sons, Mark Duncan and James Davis, both of the home; two daughters, Willie Mae Duncan and Juanita Douglas, both of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Parker Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Monday.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Humana Greer

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Humana Robinson Greer, 85, of 665 Robertson Road died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Chapel House Rawlings Funeral Home in London, Ky., with the Rev. Bob Helton officiating. The burial will be at River Hill Cemetery.

A native of Laurel County, Ky., Mrs. Greer was a homemaker.

Surviving are three sons, Edward R. Greer of Fort Lawn, William H. Greer of Lakewood, Calif., and Ottis D. Greer of Rock Hill; three daughters, Jan Robb of Cypress, Calif., Arah Mae Williams of Hamilton, Ohio, and Roetta S. Moran of Long Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at House Rawlings Funeral Home, 510 E. Fourth St., London, Ky., 40743.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Danny Hunter

LANCASTER - Mr. Danny Lee Hunter, 49, of 1999 Daisy Couch Road died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bruce Davenport officiating. Burial will be in the Fork Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Hunter was a field engineer for ISI in Charlotte and a member of the Fork Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother, Jackie H. Hunter of Lancaster; his son, Timothy Wayne Hunter of Lancaster; his daughter, Tammie H. Cook of Lancaster; three sisters, Carla H. Smith, Susan H. Wallace and Melanie H. Hinson, all of Lancaster; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway at at other times at the home of his mother, Jackie H. Hunter, at 4608 Flat Creek Road.

Ruth Laney

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Ruth Safrit Laney, 84, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Osceola Methodist Church, 6575 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, with the Rev. Bob Dunn officiating. Internment will follow immediately at the church cemetery.

A native of Cabarrus County, N.C., Mrs. Laney was a long-time resident of the Indian Land Community before moving to Charlotte. A gifted seamstress and homemaker, she was also a longtime member of Osceola United Methodist Church.

Surviving are four daughters, Betty L. Griffin, Lou M. Park, JoAnn Sammataro and Sue L. Funderburk; five sons, Bill E. Laney, Jimmy L. Laney, Charles F. Laney, John A. Laney and Tommy R. Laney; her sister, Willie M. Park; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Osceola United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6575 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 or to a charity of one's choice.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte.

Jimmy Thompson

CHESTER - Mr. Jimmy Wayne Thompson, 62, of 820 Briarcliff Circle died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Curtis Wells officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Gainesville, Ga., Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and attended El Bethel United Methodist Church in Fort Lawn. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Lancaster. He was retired from Springs Industries and was the widower of Judith Thompson.

Surviving are his son, Wayne Thompson of Chester; his brother, Frank Thompson of Lancaster; and three sisters, Jean Thompson of Lancaster, Cethel Cagle of Gainesville and Hazel Bowers of Columbia.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Gloria Thrift

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Gloria Jean Starnes Thrift, 54, of 5050 Billy Wilson Road died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Eastview Baptist Church, with the Revs. Keith Cobb and Bill Shytle officiating. The burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Thrift was a native of Rock Hill and a member of Eastview Baptist Church. She was a production worker for Smith Enterprises for most of her life.

Surviving are her husband, James Thrift; her son, Jimmy Thrift of York; two daughters, Tammy Allen of Rock Hill and Cindy Jackson of York; three brothers, Kenneth Starnes of Aiken and Laverne Starnes and John Glenn Starnes, both of Richmond, Va.; and two sisters, Sheila Howe of Rock Hill and Myra Starnes of Richmond.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the home.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.
